The canonical erection of a parish is a moment of thanksgiving and joy that fulfils concrete pastoral needs such as demographic growth and the need to bring sacramental life closer to the faithful, and that makes the community a space of celebration, action, and building
The first mission is the proclamation of the Word of God, through the Liturgy, catechesis, and formation, by nourishing the faith of the people; the second is the sanctification of the faithful through the celebration of the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, the centre of parish life; the third is to translate the love of Christ into concrete gestures of mercy, through service to
The text reports on the solemn canonical erection of the new parish of São João Paulo II in the Vila Portuguesa in the east of São Paulo on 26 July 2026. The Mass was presided over by Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, Archbishop and Metropolitan, with Dom Cícero Alves de França as co-celebrant. Father Adalberto Erwinski was installed as parish priest. The parish was separated from the parish of Divino Espírito Santo and is under the care of the Spiritan fathers (CSSp). The origin of the community dates back to 1980, when Father José Dillon gathered a group of married couples to begin a new missionary front. The name of the parish goes back to the visit of Pope John Paul II to Brazil in 1980 and was officially adopted after his canonisation in 2014. The parish includes, in addition to the main church, the communities of São Judas Tadeu, Santa Dulce dos Pobres, and Nossa Senhora Aparecida. The celebration included the reading of the decree, the canonical taking possession by the parish priest with the handing over of the keys, the purple stole, and the oil of baptism, as well as a homily by the Archbishop on the three missions of a parish: proclamation, sanctification through the Sacraments, and mercy.

On Sunday, July 26, 2026, in Vila Portuguesa, in the eastern zone of the capital of São Paulo, the solemn Mass for the canonical erection of the Parish of Saint John Paul II, within the Deanery of Saint Timothy in the Belém Region, was celebrated, presided over by Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, Metropolitan Archbishop, with Bishop Cícero Alves de França, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese in the Belém Region, among the concelebrants.
In the same celebration, Father Adalberto Erwinski was installed as Parish Priest.
The new Parish, separated from the Parish of the Divine Holy Spirit, is under the care of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (CSSp), the Spiritan Fathers. In addition to the mother church, it includes the Communities of Saint Jude Thaddeus, Saint Dulce of the Poor, and Our Lady of Aparecida.
Located at 153 Rua dos Espigueiros, the new Parish originated in 1980, when Father José Dillon, SVD, gathered a group of couples from the then Parish of Reconciliation (now the Parish of Saint Mary Magdalene), in Parque Santa Madalena, to initiate a new missionary front in the neighborhood. The initiative received the support of Bishop Luciano Pedro Mendes de Almeida, then Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese in the Belém Region, who assisted the community in renting the first hall and, subsequently, in acquiring the land where the church is now built.
The name of the community also dates back to the visit of Pope John Paul II to Brazil in 1980. On that occasion, Bishop Luciano observed that the communities were dedicated only to saints who had already been canonized. After dialogue with the faithful, it was decided to maintain the homage to the Pope, with Saint John the Baptist as patron. In 1982, an open-air Mass presided over by Bishop Luciano marked the installation of a cross on the land. With the canonization of Pope John Paul II in 2014, the community officially adopted the name of the Saint.
Constituted as a Pastoral Area in the year 2020, the community consolidated its pastoral organization under the guidance of Bishop Luiz Carlos Dias, then Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese in the Belém Region, and, more recently, of Bishop Cícero Alves de França.
To O SÃO PAULO, Father Adalberto Erwinski, CSSp, highlighted that the canonical erection of the Parish is a moment of thanksgiving for the blessings received from God and for the active community participation.
“The creation of a parish responds to concrete pastoral needs, such as urban and population growth, the formation of new neighborhoods, and the need to bring the sacramental life closer to the faithful. The Parish is the space for celebration and action,” he said. “Here, as a community, we gather to celebrate the sacraments and to welcome brothers and sisters in need. We are a community of love, sharing, and fraternity,” he detailed.
Oiliznod Santana Pereira, pastoral coordinator, highlighted that the new Parish already has structured the works of the pastorates of the Eucharist, Baptism, Matrimony, Communication, and Catechesis, with formation for children, adults, and Confirmation.
“In addition to the pastoral dimension, the Mother Church of Saint John Paul II accompanies 23 families in a situation of social vulnerability, while the Community of Saint Jude Thaddeus serves another 20 families. As a Church, we seek to meet the most urgent needs of the residents,” recalled Oiliznod. “Saint John Paul II inspires us in the living of faith and in the witness of the teachings of Jesus from the reality in which we are inserted,” he emphasized.
Giovana D’Assunção Vilella, 22, is the coordinator of Pascom and a member of the youth group Peregrinos do Amor. “The journey was intense, and today we are realizing a dream. Our mission as a Parish is to proclaim the Gospel and to translate the love of God through communal and solidarity living,” she summarized.
At the beginning of the celebration, the decree of canonical creation of the Parish was read, and subsequently, the canonical installation of Father Adalberto Erwinski as Parish Priest took place.
As part of the installation rite, Father Adalberto received the book of the Holy Gospels from the hands of Cardinal Scherer, after having made his profession of faith. After the moment of prayer of the faithful, Bishop Odilo handed the Parish Priest the keys to the church and the tabernacle, the purple stole, and the oil of Baptism, signs of the sacraments he may administer. The Priest also renewed the priestly promises.
At the beginning of the celebration, Bishop Odilo highlighted the joy with the creation of that parish community, the fruit of many years of work: “We want to thank God for all the missionary work carried out until now and for the presence of the Spiritan fathers, who did a great work in the organization of pastoral life, gathering and forming these communities.”
In the homily, the Archbishop recalled the three missions of a parish: “The first mission is the proclamation of the Word of God, through the liturgy, catechesis, and formation, nourishing the faith of the people; the second is the sanctification of the faithful through the celebration of the sacraments, especially of the Eucharist, the center of parish life; the third is to translate the love of Christ into concrete gestures of charity, through service to the poor, the sick, and the needy, making the parish a true community of the Good Shepherd.”
“May God help us, and Saint John Paul II, who did this so well for the whole Church, intercede for this Parish and always be an example and stimulus for all,” concluded the Cardinal.
Bishop Cícero Alves de França also expressed the wish that “this community, which is alive and important for the proclamation of the Gospel, may continue to grow, so that many fruits may come and that all of us, as the Church of Jesus Christ, may evangelize this neighborhood. Congratulations, Saint John Paul II Parish. Congratulations to you!”
In the Archdiocese, the newly created Parish is the first dedicated to Saint John Paul II, who was Pope from October 16, 1978, the date on which he was elected in conclave, until his death on April 2, 2005. Beatified on May 1, 2011, by Pope Benedict XVI, he was canonized on April 27, 2014, by Pope Francis. His liturgical memorial is celebrated on October 22.

Parabéns a vocês!”
