The sacrifice is not a mere ritual, but an expression of devotion to Allah and of God-consciousness (Taqwa), which manifests itself in concrete care for people in need worldwide.
The sacrifice is not an ordinary tradition that is merely passed down from generation to generation, nor is it a mere cultural habit. Rather, it is the expression of the determination to place the love of Allah above all other love.
The text is a Friday sermon by DITIB in preparation for the Festival of Sacrifice (Id al-Adha). It presents the sacrifice as a central symbol of Islam, reaching back to the Prophet Adam and connected with the story of Ibrahim and Ismail. The sermon emphasizes that the sacrifice is not a mere ritual or a cultural habit, but an expression of devotion to Allah and of letting go of what is most dear. Taqwa, that is, God-consciousness and piety, is named as the true goal. Taqwa is defined as responsible action in all areas of life and as compassion for people in need worldwide. DITIB organizes a sacrifice campaign in 85 countries and 410 regions together with the Türkiye Diyanet Vakfı. The faithful are urged not to postpone their sacrifices until the last day, so that those in need receive help in a timely manner.

The Sacrifice: A Sign of Devotion and a Symbol of Brotherhood
(22.05.2026)
Honored Believers!
Only a few days separate us from the Festival of Sacrifice. Insha’Allah, we will observe the Festival of Sacrifice on the coming Wednesday. May our Lord count us among those who honorably enliven the blessed days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah.
My Brothers and Sisters!
The sacrifice is one of the most important symbols of Islam¹ and is an ancient form of religious practice whose roots reach back to the Prophet Adam.² Our Prophet (s) emphasized the high status of the sacrifice as follows: “There is no deed on the days of the Festival of Sacrifice that is more beloved to Allah than the offering of a sacrificial animal.”³ At the same time, he earnestly warned those who, despite having the financial means, refrain from this sacrifice.⁴
My Brothers and Sisters!
The sacrifice is not an ordinary tradition merely passed down from generation to generation, nor is it a mere cultural habit. Rather, it is the expression of the resolve to place the love of Allah above all other loves. The sacrifice means being ready, if necessary, to devote oneself completely to Allah, as Ismail (as.) was, and being able to let go of what is dearest in life for the sake of Allah, as Ibrahim (as.) did.
Allah, the Exalted, is in need of nothing.⁵ He needs neither our sacrificial animals nor their flesh or blood. Thus it is stated in the Noble Quran: “Neither their flesh nor their blood reaches Allah, but your piety reaches Him. (…)”⁶
Another Quranic verse makes clear that Allah accepts the sacrifice only from the God-fearing.⁷ This clarifies that the true goal of the sacrifice is to attain Taqwa, that is, God-consciousness and piety.
But what exactly does Taqwa mean? Taqwa means being aware of one’s servitude to Allah and acting responsibly and sensitively in all areas of life. It means avoiding everything that distances us from Allah’s pleasure. If life is a journey and man is a traveler, then Taqwa is the most valuable thing accompanying us on this path. This attitude does not only mean thinking of one’s own salvation. It also means making the suffering of our oppressed and needy brothers and sisters all over the world our own concern and giving them hope.
To translate this God-consciousness into concrete help, DITIB is also organizing the Sacrifice Campaign this year with great care, jointly with the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation. Our volunteers are active in 410 regions within 85 countries to bring help to those in need who are waiting with hope for support. From the selection of the sacrificial animals to their distribution, every single step is carried out with great responsibility. The animals whose authorization you entrust to us will be slaughtered according to Islamic guidelines in your name, the entire process will be documented and transparently communicated to you.
Dear Believers!
The possibility to make a sacrifice by proxy is available until the first day of the Festival of Sacrifice. Within this period, you can either hand over your sacrifices in person against a receipt to the responsible persons of our mosques or transfer them via our online donation channels. Your entrusted sacrifices should be able to reach those in need in a timely manner. Therefore, let us not postpone the donations until the last day. May Allah make our sacrifices a sincere expression of our devotion and our Taqwa. May they be a means to bring us closer to our Lord. (Amin)

Die Opfergabe: Zeichen der Hingabe und Symbol der Geschwisterlichkeit
(22.05.2026)
Doch was bedeutet Taqwa genau?
(Amin)
