The Festival of Sacrifice: Being Ibrahim and Devotion Following the Example of Ismail (27.05.2026) Honored elders! Dear young brothers and sisters, who are our future! And you dear children, who fill our mosque with joy! A warm welcome to the House of Allah on this blessed morning of the Festival of Sacrifice. All praise is due to Allah, Who allows us to experience another Festival of Sacrifice. May our festival be blessed! Dear believers! One day, the Companions of our Prophet (s) came to him and asked with great curiosity: “O Messenger of Allah! What is the significance of these sacrificial animals?” Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (s) answered: “They belong to the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim.”¹ My brothers and sisters! When we speak of “sacrifice (Kurban),” we think of the Prophet Ibrahim. And when we think of the Prophet Ibrahim, we think of “devotion and submission.” These festive days are simultaneously days on which we newly feel the unwavering loyalty of Ibrahim (a.s.) in our hearts. Thus, our exalted Creator speaks in the Quran: “You have indeed in Ibrahim and those who were with him an excellent example (…)”² Thereby, Allah reminds us that we should follow this blessed Prophet, whose life was entirely dedicated to Allah. Although Ibrahim (a.s.) lived in a society that associated other gods with Allah, he remained a steadfast defender of Tawhid – the pure belief in the one God. Because he boldly rejected the false gods of his society, he was ostracized by people and even threatened by his own father.³ Yet he never made concessions in his faith. For the truth, he was ready to leave his homeland and home and even to sacrifice his own life on the path of Allah. The life of Ibrahim (a.s.) was characterized by severe trials. For many years, a child was denied to him. He asked his Lord for a righteous son – and Allah finally granted him a son in advanced age, who became the joy of his heart.⁴ By divine command, Ibrahim (a.s.) left his wife and his beloved son Ismail in a dry, barren valley⁵ – in Mecca. In that moment, his wife Hajar spoke with full trust: “If Allah has commanded this of you, then He will never leave us behind.”⁶ And it was precisely in this that true devotion and deep trust in Allah were manifested. The Zamzam spring became the reward for exactly this trust and for the difficult struggle that Hajar waged alone in the desert. Ismail grew up and reached the age in which he could help his father. Together, Ibrahim and Ismail rebuilt the Kaaba, the first house of worship on earth,⁷ with their own hands. But the greatest trial was yet to come. Ibrahim saw in a dream that he was sacrificing his beloved son. When he told Ismail about it, the latter answered: “My father, do what you are commanded; you will find me, if Allah wills, steadfast.”⁸ Both father and son submitted with complete loyalty to the will of Allah. Precisely in this moment, the divine call resounded: “O Ibrahim! You have fulfilled the vision. (…)”⁹ As a sign of their sincerity, Allah granted them a sacrificial animal.¹⁰ The memory of this immense devotion has been passed down from generation to generation and forms to this day the foundation of our sacrifice. Dear brothers and sisters! The Prophet Ibrahim passed every trial that he encountered. Whenever his Lord said to him: “Submit!”, he answered without hesitation: “I submit completely to the Lord of the Worlds.”¹¹ Thus, he taught us that the path to a perfect faith leads through unconditional devotion to Allah. Peace be upon Ibrahim... Peace be upon Ismail... Peace be upon Hajar... And peace be upon the entire Ummah of Muhammad, who follows their blessed path! I wish you all and your families a blessed Festival of Sacrifice. Eid mubarak. Id mubarek.
