Greenpeace measurements: PFAS polluters apparently do not adjust discharges to low water levels on the Rhine

The use of PFAS in everyday products leads to a dangerous accumulation of these persistent chemicals in the environment and in the human body, resulting in significant health risks despite the availability of alternatives.

Many of the over ten thousand PFAS substances harm health and the environment. Some, such as PFOS and PFOA, are considered carcinogenic, disrupt the hormonal system, and impair reproduction.

The text informs about the presence of PFAS in everyday products such as clothing and packaging as well as in the environment. Greenpeace refers to measurements showing that these substances accumulate in rivers, seas, and food chains. It is pointed out that many PFAS substances are health-harmful, carcinogenic, and hormonally active. The measurements on fish from the North and Baltic Seas are partly above the EFSA recommendations. The text emphasizes that safe, PFAS-free alternatives exist for many applications. It addresses the contamination of soils, groundwater, and food fish by these chemicals. The core message is the warning about the long-term health and ecological consequences of PFAS use.

PFAS, which are used for water- and stain-repellent functions, are found in sport and outdoor clothing, carpets, roof sealants, and food packaging such as pizza boxes and baking paper. Safe, PFAS-free alternatives exist for many of these applications. Many of the over ten thousand PFAS substances harm health and the environment. Some, such as PFOS and PFOA, are considered carcinogenic, disrupt the hormonal system, and impair reproduction. Many of these substances remain in the human body for a long time. PFAS do not break down and accumulate in the food chain. Previous investigations by Greenpeace in the Rhine showed that PFAS occur in rivers and reach the sea via these rivers. There, they accumulate particularly in sea foam. Greenpeace confirmed this in early 2025 with an investigation. Contact with PFAS-containing foam can be harmful to health, especially for children. In addition, PFAS can contaminate soils and groundwater. Spray in coastal areas may also contain the chemicals. Consequently, food fish, mussels, and crabs from the North and Baltic Seas are partly heavily contaminated with harmful PFAS. Measurements by Greenpeace on plaice, herring, turbot, and crabs indicate PFAS concentrations that exceed the recommendations of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for a weekly intake for adults.
