The Catholic Church is at a turning point that can only be overcome through bold, democratic, and just reforms, particularly in the areas of gender equality and violence prevention.

We are committed to a Church that takes participation and democracy seriously, that overcomes the clericalism of a two-class Church, and that aims for the equal rights of all genders.

The text is a call by Catholic reform groups for the Catholic Day 2026 in Würzburg and for a human chain on 15 May 2025. It calls for bold reforms in the Church in order to respond to the current societal and ecclesial challenges. Central demands are the overcoming of clericalism, the introduction of democracy and participation, and the equal rights of all genders. The signatories appeal to the vision of Jesus and the Second Vatican Council as the basis for their demands. They criticise the systemic causes of sexualised and spiritual violence as well as their cover-up. Furthermore, they call for the consistent implementation of the decisions of the Synodal Path and the World Synod by the bishops. The text calls on all believers, regardless of their marital status or sexual orientation, to actively work for a more just Church and world.

Call of Catholic Reform Forces to the Catholic Assembly 2026 in Würzburg and to the Human Chain on Friday, 15 May 2025, 3 p.m. between the Cathedral and the Augustinian Church In the great challenges and upheavals in which our Church and our society find themselves, we are experiencing a turning point that requires courageous reforms in all areas and at all levels. This can only happen together and in solidarity. We reform forces are motivated by the liberating vision of Jesus, the love of God and of neighbour, which calls us to commit concretely to a more just Church and a more just world. We commit ourselves to a Church that perceives "the joys and hopes, the grief and anguish of the people of our time, especially of the poor and all who suffer" (Council Decree "Gaudium et Spes") and, in communion with the whole human family, makes the dawning of the Kingdom of God concretely visible and tangible. We commit ourselves to a Church that takes participation and democracy seriously, that overcomes the clericalism of a two-class Church, and that aims at the equal rights of all genders. We expect the bishops to implement the decisions of the Synodal Path and of the World Synod consistently and in a timely manner. Synodality is an important counter-model in the face of increasingly totalitarian political developments throughout the world. We commit ourselves to a Church that finally combats the systemic causes of sexualized and spiritual violence as well as their cover-up, as the Synodal Path in Germany has aimed to do since 2019. The texts that were adopted (as well as those that were not adopted) show ways out of the fundamental crisis of credibility and the great backlog of reform that has existed since the end of the Second Vatican Council and the Würzburg Synod. We commit ourselves to the urgently needed renewal of all priestly, diaconal, and leadership ministries, so that they enable living local communities to engage credibly in solidarity. We want a Church that gives hope, that is close to people, that does not manage itself in XXL parishes, and that aims at the common good. We commit ourselves to the end of wars throughout the world, to global justice, and to the preservation of the foundations of life. We encourage a new departure of the conciliar process "Justice, Peace and the Care of Creation" that began in 1983, for the failures to date in climate and peace policy make consistent action more necessary than ever. We expect the Church leadership to make intensive efforts for a better relationship between the Vatican and the Catholic Church in Germany, so that the institutional Church in Germany does not lose even more relevance, but can continue to make its contribution for the people in our country and within the universal Church. We call on all people, young and old, those living alone, couples, the divorced, queer people: "Have courage, stand up!" Get involved, speak out, commit yourselves to those who are excluded, shape the Church locally, and let fresh wind into the house! For a Church without fear, an open house, in which we live and celebrate diversity and difference. We call for the human chain "I want you to be..." for gender equality in our Church. The human chain initiated by the initiative #meingottdiskriminiertnicht on Friday, 15 May 2026 at 3 p.m. (after the ecumenical women's liturgy in the Cathedral) is to stretch from St. Kilian's Cathedral to the Augustinian Church. Signatory Reform Forces We reform forces (victim initiatives for sexualized and spiritual violence, Catholic associations, and Church reform groups) see ourselves as the voice for the great majority of Catholic women and men in Germany who are committed to reforms for the sake of the future of the Church. According to the Church Membership Survey (KMU 2023), 96 percent of those surveyed consider far-reaching reforms in the Roman Catholic Church to be urgently necessary. 1. 1.
