The Day of Ashura and the Awareness of Unity

Community · main message Mercy · carrying Gratitude

Fasting on the Day of Ashura and sharing the Ashura dish are central practices that strengthen spiritual piety and promote social unity and solidarity in a diverse community.

Just as each ingredient in the Ashura dish retains its own flavor and together they create a unique enjoyment, so too do people with different views and cultures contribute to a shared, stronger society.

The text is a Friday sermon from the DITIB Religious Office that presents the Day of Ashura as a blessed occasion for voluntary fasting and spiritual reflection. It refers to the Sunnah of the Prophet, considering fasting in the month of Muharram to be an excellent deed that erases the sins of the past year. A central motif is the unity of the community, illustrated by the Turkish tradition of preparing and sharing an Ashura dish made from various ingredients. This practice symbolizes that different cultures and views together form a stronger society. The text calls for these traditions to be upheld in order to consolidate solidarity and brotherhood in society. Concrete instructions are given to observe the fast on the ninth and tenth or on the tenth and eleventh day of Muharram, in order to distinguish oneself from the People of the Book. The sermon concludes with the prayer that Allah may accept the acts of worship, and emphasizes mercy and mutual acquaintance as core values.

The Day of Ashura and the Awareness of Unity (19.06.2026) My brothers and sisters! Dear believers! Allah has granted us the opportunity to soon experience another blessed day. Insha'Allah, we will observe the Day of Ashura, the tenth day of the month of Muharram, on the coming Thursday. Our Prophet (s) referred to Muharram as "the month of Allah"¹ and stated that the most excellent fasting after Ramadan is fasting in the month of Muharram.² The Day of Ashura also falls within this month; that day which is very special due to its history, its blessing, and the fasting therein. Our beloved Prophet (s) and his Companions fasted for the first time on Ashura³ and continued to do so until fasting in Ramadan became obligatory. Thereafter, fasting on Ashura became a voluntary act of worship.⁴ Honored Muslims! Fasting on Ashura is not obligatory, yet the Prophet (s) encouraged us with the following words: "I hope from Allah that fasting on the Day of Ashura expiates the sins of the previous year."⁵ All of this shows: This blessed month is an opportunity to strengthen our worship, our supplication, our reflection, and our awareness of servitude towards Allah. At the same time, it is a great gate of mercy, which is intended to lead us back to piety (Taqwa), particularly through fasting. Dear believers! Another particularity of the month of Muharram and Ashura is that they belong to the most beautiful symbols of our unity and cohesion. There is a Turkish dessert consisting of many different types of grains, legumes, and dried fruits, which is prepared and distributed on the Day of Ashura. Just as each ingredient in the Ashura dish retains its own flavor and together creates a unique enjoyment, so too do people with different views and cultures contribute to a common, stronger society. Regarding this enrichment that arises from our differences, and regarding our responsibility towards one another, Allah says: "O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female and made you into peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Verily, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing and All-Aware."⁶ My brothers and sisters! The tradition of distributing Ashura is also a beautiful custom. It promotes the mutual getting to know one another, to which this noble verse calls us, and at the same time strengthens sharing, solidarity, and helpfulness in society. Let us use Ashura to further consolidate our unity and brotherhood. Let us hold on to these deeply rooted values that connect us and fill our tables as well as our hearts with blessing. Let us carry the beautiful messages of Ashura to our neighbors and loved ones through this tradition. Honored believers! To conclude, I would like to remind you how the fasting of Ashura, which leads us to God-fearingness and spiritually enriches us, is observed. When it was reported to the Messenger of Allah (s) that the People of the Book particularly honor this day and fast only on the tenth day, he said: "Insha'Allah, we will also fast on the ninth day of Muharram in the coming year."⁷ However, before the next Muharram arrived, he passed away. From the narrations on this subject, it emerges that it is closer to the Sunnah to perform the fasting of Ashura either on the ninth and tenth or on the tenth and eleventh day of the month of Muharram. May Allah accept our fasting and all our acts of worship. Amen. Möge Allah unser Fasten und all unsere Gottesdienste annehmen. Amin.
