Political will can enable sustainable urban and transport policy, as Utrecht demonstrates, and citizens can exert pressure on policymakers through collective action to halt fossil fuel infrastructure and advance the energy transition.

A whole different story in Utrecht, the world's most bicycle-friendly city. We visited and, with a "photo reportage," give a visual impression of what political will can achieve.

The newsletter from Parents for Future (P4F) deals with the topics of the transport transition and climate protection. It begins with the observation that 21.1% of Germany's greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to road traffic, and presents Utrecht as a bicycle-friendly model. The text contains a photo reportage on Utrecht in which the political will for sustainable urban planning is made visible. In parallel, political actions are presented: a postcard campaign against the Building Modernisation Act (GMG) and against new gas power plants, as well as a demonstration in Hamm in which 2,000 people formed a mobile wind turbine. The Tour de Natur is promoted as a participatory bike tour for climate protection. The text connects concrete everyday examples (cycling in Utrecht) with political demands directed at the federal government. The core message is that political will makes sustainable change possible and that individual and collective actions can exert pressure on policymakers.

NEWSLETTER #49 Page 1 www.parentsforfuture.de (P4F) • Newsletter #49 • 06/2026 Dear readers, according to the Federal Environment Agency, 21.1% of Germany’s greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to road traffic. Yet cars stand idle on average for 23 hours a day. They waste valuable space in city centers. Where one car is parked, eight bicycles could stand. Roads heat up cities, etc. It is quite different in Utrecht, the most bicycle-friendly city in the world. We visited the city and provide a visual impression through a “photo reportage” of what political will can achieve. For the summer, we recommend three participatory bike tours: “Tour de Natur,” “Tour de Verkehrswende,” and the “DemokRADtour.” Our “Good News” section also focuses on the topic of the traffic transition. In addition, we have the Red Climate Card in our bag for Katherina Reiche, we shed light on the European Citizens’ Initiative “Good Food For All,” and we reveal what lies behind the TAFF, which took place in Colombia. Climate protection begins with education – as Parents, we are closely involved with this topic. Therefore, we introduce the action weeks of the Public Climate School and report on the crowdfunding by a P4F supporter for her book “Climate Protection is Child Protection.” Jörg Weißenborn wishes you an exciting read on behalf of the newsletter team. With the Red Climate Card (RCC) as a postcard action #WegVomGas, which is directed directly at Federal Chancellor Merz, everyone can personally exert further pressure on federal politics. The card contains much input, so that it specifically contributes to informing those who sign it. Current status: The GMG has already been adopted by the cabinet. Parliamentary consultations began on June 11. The legislative process is to be completed before the parliamentary summer recess. There is still time to influence the legislation. Therefore, participate in the postcard action as soon as possible. Here are some tips: Postcard Action #WegVomGas On the P4F homepage, you will find, in addition to further information, the postcard with various crops. It is best to print it on 170 g paper and distribute the cards so that as many people as possible can raise their voice. PARTICIPATORY ACTION: RCC POSTCARDS AGAINST THE GAS COST TRAP AND FOSSIL POLICY OF MINISTER REICHE The “Expensive Heating Act” (Building Modernization Act/GMG) by Katherina Reiche must – and can – still be stopped: for affordable heat and climate protection instead of a gas cost trap and fossil fuel dependence. Join the Red Climate Card postcard action! RKK POSTCARD CAMPAIGN IN BONN The P4F local group Bonn distributed approximately 2,000 Red Climate Cards “#WegVomGas” in April and May. The first large batch of RKK postcards was handed out at the demonstration on 24 April in the Hofgarten in Bonn – turnout was high and over 1,000 cards were gone in no time! Many cards were also distributed via people who wanted to pass them on directly within their immediate circles. At the festival of the August Macke Quarter in Bonn on 17 May, we set up a small “installation” for signing cards and taking them away (see photo). Cards signed on site were sent out on 18 May. In addition, we displayed the cards in various locations, from cultural centres to organic food stores. Finally, at the Anti-Gas demonstration featuring the human wind turbine on 30 May in Hamm, another over 200 RKK postcards could be distributed. We hope for a high number of send-offs! Via email to committee members and to media outlets (from WDR to local newspapers, SZ, Spiegel, and ZEIT), the Bonn initiator of the campaign, acting as an ordinary citizen and P4F activist, drew attention to the campaign and her rejection of Reiche’s plans. Many of us should do the same! Each person sticks on the postage themselves. Signature below – and off to the Federal Chancellor! Make your campaign public! The more people learn about the campaign, the better: For example, inform your own Member of the Bundestag about the campaign – and of course the media. Send emails to the members of the Committee on Economic Affairs and Energy and to the parliamentary groups – especially those of the CDU and SPD (!!!). In particular, SPD members of parliament must/should be pointed to the cost trap, the unsocial aspects of the GMG, and the citizen-led RKK campaign. The members of the Bundestag Committee on Economic Affairs and Energy can be found at www.bundestag.de/ausschuesse/a09_wirtschaft. The email address of each MdB is FirstName.LastName(at)bundestag.de (umlauts as two letters); following this pattern is faster than searching for each one individually on the internet… The email addresses of the parliamentary groups and ministers can also be found on the internet. Susanne, P4F Bonn Under the motto “Future instead of Gas – Defend the Energy Transition”, 5,000 people demonstrated in Hamm at the end of May. 2,000 of them formed a moving wind turbine as a human figure in front of the backdrop of the Gersteinwerk gas power plant (RWE), thereby setting a new world record. (Here is a video recording of the rotating wind turbine.) The initiators of the protest actions, Greenpeace, Campact, Fridays for Future, and BUND, are demanding an immediate change of course in current energy policy, away from fossil gas and towards a consistent, socially just energy transition. The reason for the protests is the plans of Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (CDU) to build new gas power plants on a large scale throughout Germany. In the view of the alliance, Minister Reiche is thereby setting the wrong energy policy priorities: Instead of resolutely advancing the expansion of renewable energies, central progress in the energy transition would be slowed down and billions of euros would be invested in climate-harmful fossil infrastructure. CLIMATE PROTEST IN HAMM AGAINST NEW GAS POWER PLANTS DEMONSTRATORS FORM WORLD’S LARGEST MOVING WIND TURBINE By the way: The art and cultural association “Die Strecke” from Hamm would like to integrate the living wind turbine of the climate protest as a temporary artwork into its Streckengalerie. Then come along to the Tour de Natur, whether for one day or the entire two weeks! You can find details on the stages and registration at tourdenatur.net/tour_2026 The bicycle demonstration originated in 1991 from the resistance against the Thuringian Forest motorway and has been organized 100% on a voluntary basis every year since then. The bike tour is shaped by people who are active locally and give us interesting insights into their region. We organize a joint protest against projects harmful to the climate, such as the further expansion of the A5 motorway near Frankfurt. The Tour de Natur is not an "all-inclusive" package, but a participatory tour. You have the opportunity to contribute through workshops, participate in music and street theater, but also to support the tour's operations itself, whether by washing up or chopping vegetables. We will sleep in gym halls or similar facilities, or in your own tent. The mobile "Flaming Kitchen" provides us with vegan food, as regional, seasonal, and organic as possible. Here is a small excerpt of the topic palette: Our starting point, Frankfurt, has transformed itself into a bicycle city, and we will take a look at this on an excursion with traffic activists. However, for people commuting in and out, only the car is still seen. With this logic, the expansion of the A5 to 10 (!!!) lanes is being pushed forward, while alternatives such as the S-Bahn or cycle superhighways are progressing very slowly. We want to draw attention to this imbalance and protest against the motorway expansion! From Frankfurt to Marburg, we will be joined by the singer-songwriter and climate activist Erik Stenzel, who will cycle with us and also give a concert in Bad Nauheim on 27 July. Last year, he was on tour for 2,500 km by bike, by the way. In Marburg, a real culture of ecological-solidarity projects has developed, creating positive changes from below. We have the chance to get to know some of them and receive inspiration for our own engagement. Southern Thuringia also offers interesting aspects regarding organic agriculture and solidarity projects. At our destination, Erfurt, we will celebrate 35 years of the Tour de Natur – together with people who have been part of the tour over the last three and a half decades. Everyone is welcome on the Tour de Natur, whether young or old! A tour-capable bike on which you can transport your things, as well as normal everyday fitness, are sufficient. With daily stages of 35 to 50 km at a family-friendly pace, children and older people can also keep up well. The daily contributions are freely selectable from 11 to 30 euros; children up to 14 years old pay nothing, those from 14 to 18 years old only a meal contribution of 5 euros. You need a mat and a sleeping bag; please also bring your tent if you like. Musical instruments can ride along in the cargo bike. You can find all information at tourdenatur.net If you have questions, please send an email to buero@tourdenatur.net or call 0351 21 78 90 36. Hotline from 25 July to 9 August: 0176 96 52 34 08. Sit down in the morning with coffee on a bridge in Utrecht and observe only the bicycle traffic for 20 minutes. Then you immediately understand why Utrecht is considered the most cyclist-friendly city in the world according to CNN and the “Copenhagenize Index”. The fourth-largest city in the Netherlands is ideal for sustainable city tourism: compact, excellently accessible by bike, full of parks, waterways, and urban transformations. The political will is visible. The city is internationally regarded as a model for cyclist-friendly planning – every day, tens of thousands of people cycle there. Jörg Weißenborn from the newsletter team cycled along for a week. Everyday life Bikes as far as the eye can see – 94 percent of all Utrecht residents have a bicycle. Many are swiftly on their typical Dutch bikes, only the German tourists wear helmets. The locals feel safe, aggressive drivers are rarely seen. Strict rules apply to cars and buses. Bicycle garage The Fietsenstalling Stationsplein is the largest bicycle parking garage in the world. It is located directly under the main station, offers over 12,500 spaces on three levels, is open and monitored around the clock. A digital guidance system indicates available spaces. The first 24 hours are free, then €1.50 per day, annual subscription €90. And there is a bike shop. Parents for Future (P4F) /// Germany 06/2026 NEWSLETTER #49 Page 7 www.parentsforfuture.de (P4F)•Newsletter #49•06/2026 Traffic signs and traffic flow Many traffic signs ensure that cyclists are well oriented, usually have right of way, and thanks to intelligent traffic light controls with sensors “stay in the flow”, i.e., get green lights super quickly. Mostly reddish, sometimes colorful, wide cycle paths also ensure visual clarity. In addition, many small bridges over the many canals, some heated, roundabouts optimized for cyclists throughout the city. Second-hand market Sustainability is also in vogue at De Betonnerie, a large second-hand market directly on a cycle path. Meeting point for many students, who make up 20% of the population of Utrecht. In front of the market: a sea of bicycles. Bicycle parking garages Distributed across the city, there is a dozen pure bicycle parking garages. Question: In which city can you already filter a city map by bicycle parking garages!? Parks and castles Small parks in the city, large parks around Utrecht, e.g., the Wilhelminapark and the Máximapark. A dream for longer exploration tours, where you keep passing old castles and fortresses, e.g., Castle de Haar – the largest and most magnificent castle in the country. They too are well reachable by bike thanks to 420 km of cycle paths. Botanical garden The Botanical Garden around the historic Fort Hoofddijk extends over nine hectares and combines scientific heritage with landscape diversity. As part of the Utrecht University, it supports botanical research, species protection projects, and environmental education. Parents for Future (P4F) /// Germany 06/2026 NEWSLETTER #49 Page 9 www.parentsforfuture.de (P4F)•Newsletter #49•06/2026 Since 2021, the Tour de Verkehrswende has been cycling through Germany every summer under the umbrella of Changing Cities e. V. With numerous intermediate stops and actions, we demonstrate for a just traffic transition with equal infrastructure: safe and fast cycle paths and a barrier-free public local transport system. This year, it will pass through Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lower Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt – that is, through three federal states where elections are held in the autumn. The tour starts on 7 August 2026 in Schwerin, passes through Hannover and Magdeburg, and finally ends on 16 August 2026 in Dessau. On the tour, initiatives, associations, and engaged people from society and politics come together. Despite the climate crisis and one energy shortage after another, the focus in Germany is still on car traffic. While funds from the special fund for public transport expansion hardly flow, Transport Minister Schnieder (CDU) recently initiated the continued construction of the A20 motorway with a spade-cutting ceremony. Cost: 550 million euros. But where are the funds for mobility between people, villages, and cities by bus, tram, train, bicycle, or on foot? These connections must be for everyone: … safe – children, elderly people, and people with limited mobility must be able to use them without danger. Good transport infrastructure can prevent serious and fatal injuries and enable more people to travel on foot or by bicycle. … healthy – physically active mobility, e.g., by bicycle, promotes health and supports climate protection. Many people want to move more and thus make a contribution. … fair – access to diverse mobility offers must be open to everyone. Public transport must work everywhere and be affordable. Everyone who would like to join the Tour de Verkehrswende is cordially invited – whether for an action, to ride along for a few hours, a few days, or the entire tour. August 2026 in Dessau.
