The true cathedral is not the building, but the heart of the faithful united through holiness and brotherly love, which serves as the living dwelling of God.
He can do without cathedrals, but he will not do without our hearts. Above all, that is where the liturgy begins.
The text describes the liturgical celebration of the cathedral consecration and the installation of two new cathedral chapter members in Chur. It emphasizes that the consecration frees the space from human disposition and hands it over to God. The installation of the cathedral chapter members is understood as incorporation into the living house of God and not as a mere administrative function. With reference to Paul, the office is defined as a call to holiness and to brotherly love, which excludes individualism. An anecdotal example of a bishop from Cameroon illustrates that the true cathedral lies in the heart and in the community of the faithful. The text calls the diocese to a spiritual renewal in order to form a common home of God. It concludes with a prayer for God-connection and holiness for the new office-holders and the entire community.

Vespers: Cathedral Consecration and Installation of Cathedral Canons
Dear newly appointed members of the Cathedral Chapter
Dear Cathedral Provost, dear Cathedral Dean, dear Cathedral Canons
Dear Brothers
Dear Guests
Dear Sisters and Brothers
The celebration of the consecration day of a church expresses that it is not an ordinary assembly hall, but a place of liturgical worship, of the glorification of God, of prayer, and of communion with God. Consecration removes the space from human availability. Through consecration, this place is, as it were, handed over to God. This transformation of purpose applies in a special way to the diocesan cathedral. Its consecration day should bring to the consciousness of the faithful in the diocese that they are all consecrated to God through Baptism, called to an intimate and deep relationship with God, and that they have been removed from their own self-disposal. They are the place of God, consecrated ground, image and children of the divine Father.
It is a special joy for us today that, together with the feast of the church’s consecration, the installation of two new canons takes place. We speak of the installation of the new chapter members, of their firm integration into the mother church of the diocese. That the cathedral canons are installed does not mean a “screwing in” into the building, but into He who, through the consecration—as mentioned before—has become the center and Lord of the church building: God Himself. As the living house of the Lord, we are called to be members of His Body.
St. Paul wonderfully expresses this reality in his letter to the community in Ephesus: “We are fellow citizens of the saints!” This means: those who are united with and imitators of those who have wholly dedicated their life and their dedication, their sacrifice and their commitment to God. To hold any office in the Church means less honor than an urgent call to holiness. We are—says Paul—“fellow members of God’s household.” We cannot grow in interiority and holiness if we do not have a deep sense of community and brotherhood. The house of God is not a house for individualists. Integration into the cathedral chapter means, above all, becoming more aware of the brotherly bond with the other cathedral canons and with the whole people of God. It is the temple of God—alive throughout—formed of living stones, which is to continue to grow.
Cathedral canons, priests, popes, bishops, the baptized, all are called to be the living dwelling of God. Our hearts should be places where God feels at home. He can do without cathedrals, but He does not want to do without our hearts. Above all, there the divine service begins. I will not forget a bishop from Cameroon who visited me last year. I showed him the cathedral. He was, of course, very impressed and appreciated the venerable history of the cathedral. During the subsequent lunch, he took out his mobile phone and showed me a picture. It was a meadow, framed by forest. He explained to me: This is my cathedral. Until now, they had no means to build a proper cathedral. This made me very thoughtful.
As Paul writes, we should all be “built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.” The whole diocese, all the faithful should harmoniously, together form a cathedral, a place of the Lord, a home of God, open to all people. In this regard—I would say—that our diocese needs a spiritual renewal, what St. Pope Paul VI. expressed when he said: The world needs a supplement of soul.
Dear Canons, may God spur you on to be an example of devotion to God, holiness, and brotherhood for our diocese. May God grant us all the grace to grow in our union with Christ, so that the faithful, in turn, feel motivated and inspired to deepen their union with the Lord. The Patroness of our Cathedral, the Mother of God, Protector of our Cathedral Chapter, is through her holiness the spur for all generations of Christian women and men. She will always encourage us to do what Christ expects of us. Amen

Vesper Kathedralweihe und Installation Domherren
Liebe neuernannte Domkapitulare
Lieber Domprobst, lieber Domdekan, liebe Domherren
Amen
