The cross is everything for the Christian: weapon, symbol, protector, and joy, and asceticism is a way of life that exists in the world but lives in the last things.
Asceticism in the Orthodox Church is a way of life, outside the space-time framework of the present world. While it exists in the world, it lives and acts in the last things, in the new world of promise and revelation.
The text is a collection of short contributions from the area of "Practice and Spiritual Life" in the Orthodox tradition. The contributions deal with the cross as a central symbol and aid to life, asceticism as a way of life beyond the present space-time framework, self-observation, purity of body and soul, people-pleasing, anger, grief, and the relationship between parents and children. Cited are the theophoric fathers, Abbot Isaac the Syrian, Amma Sarra, Abbot Isaiah, and Abbot Poemen from the Gerontikon, as well as Psalm 63. The contributions are directed at the individual and his inner life and invite self-criticism, discernment, and the acceptance of suffering. A connection to the present is made in the mention of social media and the climate of demands to explain oneself. The core message is that the human being should acknowledge his own limits, observe himself, and accept suffering as a path of purification.

To Live Without Explanations?
In an era in which Social Media Networks generate a climate of demands for people to explain what they do and why they do it, especially when they are public figures, the slogan has fallen: “Live without explanations.” The old ones used to say, “live without caring what the world will say.” This was considered a sign of a free soul, […]

The Weakness of God
Our childhood conceptions of God, identical to religious ones, present us with a strong God, demanding and harsh, spying on our lives and punishing our disobedience that opposes His will. Conceptions that cause distress, that create phobias and guilt, so that it would be preferable “that there be no God.” Of course, those who reject such a God […]

Purity of Body and Soul
Purity, according to the God-bearing Fathers, is the liberation of man from the passions. It agrees with the dual nature of the human person, with the fact that man is flesh and soul. Thus, according to Abba Isaac the Syrian, “purity of the body is holiness from the defilement of the flesh, and purity of the […]

Do Not Think
Do not think that you can easily understand your intentions, interpret your behaviors, and analyze yourself. For “the soul of man is an abyss,” according to the popular expression. And the prophet David writes about the “deep heart” (Psalm 63), that is, about the unexplored thoughts of man. Therefore, you cannot be absolute in your judgments […]

People-Pleasing
Amma Sarah said: “It is good for the eyes of men that someone does almsgiving. For even from humanity it leads to the pleasing of God” (from the “Gerontikon”). We humans have in our soul a desire that becomes the criterion of the actions of our life: “to please.” Thus, we do things to be approved. We enjoy […]

Anger
Abba Isaiah was asked what anger is, and he answered: “Contention and falsehood and lack of knowledge of God” (from the “Gerontikon”). In human relationships, anger easily appears. It is not simply a anger because things do not go as we want. It is a psychological tension, in which the other is considered not only rejectable, but our enemy. We burden him […]

God Is to Blame for Everything!
I thought that the difficult people around me were to blame for my inner turmoil. I considered that the trials, which come unexpectedly, are the cause that I do not have joy. I believed that God punishes me for my sins – known and unknown to me; that He does not care and does not concern Himself with my daily life. I wanted to […]

Three Virtues for Parents and Children
Abba Poimen said: “to watch oneself and to take care of oneself, and discernment, these three virtues are guides of the soul” (from the “Gerontikon”). The relationship between parents and children has to do not only with the love and care that parents are called to show towards their children, but […]

It Is Not Good for You!
It is not good for you to communicate with people only when you need them. Because it shows that your relationship with them is self-serving. And this should trouble you… Not because of what the other person will say about you, but because the self-serving person is fundamentally egocentric, and the egocentric person remains alone, without fullness, without […]

The Sorrows
“Many come in their lives to face the cross of suffering that coincides with sorrows and temptations. But few accept the nails of pain and Sorrow.” It is an undeniable fact that every person, at some stage in their life, has experienced small or great sorrows, which may arise from various causes. The […]

Να ζεις χωρίς εξηγήσεις;
