Monastic simplicity manifests itself in eight concrete areas of the monk's daily life and is a central virtue of monastic life.

His Holiness spoke in his address about one of the monastic virtues, namely the virtue of simplicity, and in this context dealt with eight characteristics of simplicity, giving for each characteristic examples from the daily life of a monk

The text reports on a visit by the Coptic Pope Tawadros II to the Monastery of Aba Pinai near Minya. He celebrated the Divine Liturgy, blessed the body of the patron saint, and inaugurated a restored archaeological church. He then delivered an address to the Council of Monks on the monastic virtue of simplicity. He named eight characteristics of this simplicity: cell, thinking, biblical understanding, spiritual practice, speech, monastic relationships, clothing, and food. For each characteristic he gave examples from the daily life of a monk. Several monks thanked the Pope and asked him questions, which he answered. The visit took place as part of a multi-day journey through the diocese of Minya, Asna, and Asyut.
