The spiritual progress of the human being fails above all through negligence, and repentance, humility, and steadfast perseverance are the way to God's grace.
Negligence is the cause of failure in the good!
The text is a collection of short excerpts from sermons, hagiographies, and biblical pericopes, gathered under the heading "Advice of the Saints and Elders." The contributions come from the milieu of Mount Athos and Greek-Orthodox spirituality and are edited by Stelios Koukos. Central themes are repentance, humility, patience in suffering, negligence as an obstacle to spiritual progress, and the honour of one's fellow human beings. The biblical passages from Job 18–21 address the suffering of the righteous and the responses of his friends. The hagiographies report on ascetics such as Theodosios, Joseph the Hymnographer, Anthimos of Chios, and Meletios the Pegmatitis. The texts are addressed to monks and laypeople seeking spiritual orientation. There is no explicit reference to the present, but rather a timeless spiritual instruction.
