The union of the human being with Christ is a spiritual marriage that requires vigilance, virtue, and mercy in order to enter into eternal life.
The text deals with the ecclesial image of Christ as Bridegroom and the Church as Bride. It explains that the union with Christ takes place in a spiritual and mystical manner and is not bound by gender boundaries. The author refers to passages from the Psalms in which the soul yearns for God, and to the parable of the ten virgins. Several Orthodox troparia and hymns are cited and interpreted, in particular the motifs of vigilance, the lamp of virtue, and the bridal chamber. The soul must prepare itself through virtue and faith in order to enter into the spiritual marriage with Christ. The text emphasizes the mercy of Christ, who purifies the souls and clothes them with a garment of glory. At the end, the Resurrection of Christ is interpreted as an exit from the bridal chamber, which is to save the world.

The Bridegroom of the Church
Essays
26.09.2026
Michalis Koutsos, Philologist – Author
In ecclesiastical language, the Bridegroom is Christ and the bride is the Church, that is, all the faithful, men and women, who have been baptized and apply the will of God. And the question is how a man can become a bride of Christ. The answer is that in the eyes of Christ there are no men and women but souls. The "there is neither male nor female, for we are all one" finds its fulfillment in the kingdom of heaven, where in another place Christ said that there "they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven." Consequently, our union with Christ is spiritual. Even when we eat His Body and drink His Blood, the union is not only psychic and bodily but also mystical.
Our Relationship with Christ
Our relationship with Christ again is not a relationship of equality, although He Himself consented to call us friends and brothers. It is a loving or rather erotic relationship depending on the disposition of our union. Of course, the union with God does not take place "in essence" but through the energies of God, which manifest themselves in men as love, as patience, as compassion, etc. This erotic love of Christ for the soul, as we followed it in Mythology and in the Song of Songs, was transformed in the Christian era into love, and indeed to the point of the cross. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16-18).
Christ, then, after His Resurrection becomes the Bridegroom and seeks every soul to be united with Him and to transmit to it life from His own inexhaustible life and to live eternally.
The same happens with the soul that yearns for its union with God. David expressed this yearning in an unsuspecting time in his Psalms. These references are numerous. Let us see some:
1. As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God. When shall I come and appear before the face of God? (41st)
2. O God, my God, for You I long early in the morning; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh faints for You, in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water (62nd).
3. My soul pants and pines for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh have rejoiced in the living God (83rd).
4. If I give sleep to my eyes and slumber to my eyelids and rest to my temples (131st).
5. I remembered You upon my bed; I meditated on You in the watches of the night (62nd).
Let us now see this loving relationship of man with God in the various ecclesiastical texts. We begin with the parable of the Ten Virgins, which inaugurates a multitude of troparia around the Bridegroom Christ. We encounter this parable and the troparia in the Matins of Great Wednesday.
THE BRIDEGROOM OF THE CHURCH
Behold, the Bridegroom comes at midnight, and blessed is the servant whom He shall find watching, but unworthy is the one whom He shall find negligent.
This troparion is inspired by the parable of the ten virgins and urges us not to be negligent but watchful, because in the Gospel pericope Christ said: "For you do not know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming."
I behold your bridal chamber, my Savior, adorned, and I have no garment with which to enter it; illuminate the vesture of my soul, O Giver of Light, and save me.
The hymnographer visualizes the bridal chamber of Christ, where preparations have been made for the bride souls of Christ, for which, however, one must have the appropriate garment in order to enter into this joy. He therefore takes refuge in the Light-Giving Christ to illuminate his vesture, to forgive him and to cleanse the vesture of the soul, which we later put on at Baptism but which we have soiled. Only thus, with a pure soul, can one enter into the bridal chamber, where all are resplendently arrayed, because their souls are sanctified.
Something similar is emphasized by the hymnographer in another troparion.
In the splendors of your saints, how shall I, the unworthy one, enter? For if I dare to enter the bridal chamber, the tunic will shame me, for it is not of the wedding, and I shall be cast out by the Angels. Determine, O Lord, the sloth of my soul, and save me as a lover of mankind.
The hymnographer in the following hymn speaks not of a tunic but of a lamp of virtues, with which we shall be able to enter into the joy of the Bridegroom.
Let us love the Bridegroom, brethren, let us prepare our lamps, shining forth in virtues and in true faith, that as the wise virgins of the Lord, we may enter ready, with Him into the wedding; for the Bridegroom, as God, gives to all the imperishable crown.
If we love the Bridegroom Christ, then we shall take care of our lamps, which are nothing other than our virtues and above all our faith, and thus ready we shall enter into the bridal chamber and shall not remain outside, like the foolish virgins. Inside the bridal chamber all the weddings of the Bridegroom Christ with the bride souls of the holy people take place, and the gift of God for their pure and clean life is the imperishable crown that Christ bestows upon the combatants of virtue, which is nothing other than the eternal life near the sweetest Jesus. Thus the invocation to the Bridegroom Christ is absolutely justified:
But O Bridegroom Christ, number us together with the wise Virgins, and assign us to your chosen flock, and have mercy on us. Amen.
He who has dozed in the sloth of the soul, I am not worthy, O Bridegroom Christ,
of a burning lamp from virtues, and I have been likened to foolish virgins,
in the time of labor drowsy, the bowels of your mercies,
do not shut them from me, O Master, but rousing me from my dark sleep, and bring me in together with the wise Virgins,
into your bridal chamber, where a pure sound of those who celebrate,
and of those who cry out without ceasing: Lord, glory to you.
Besides the didactic but also supplicatory character of the troparia, the handling of each hymnographer on similar themes is impressive, which consists in the emphasis of other elements of the theme. Specifically, in this troparion the following additional elements are emphasized.
1st Sloth makes the soul to doze and not to be in wakefulness, the moment when it does not know when the Bridegroom will come to visit us. This moment for every person is certainly the moment of death, when inevitably the angels will lead us to the throne of God, to be judged. However, the visit of Christ in the present life happens at many moments and it is up to us to feel Him and to bring Him into our soul.
2nd The lamp of the ten virgins, which must burn continuously, is our love towards Christ, which must never be extinguished but must be declared at all times by the practice of virtues. If the sleep of sin takes us and we doze or show sloth in the time when we must labor spiritually, then we shall be like the foolish virgins and "we shall remain outside the bridal chamber of Christ."
3rd Spiritual fatigue, like physical, is natural to happen many times, therefore we have the need for the Bridegroom to keep us in continuous wakefulness, He who has "bowels of mercies" for all the "weary and burdened" and rests them. He will keep us awake and upright in the good struggle and thus will bring us together with the wise virgins, with the struggling faithful, into the Bridal Chamber of the Lord, where a proper celebration takes place. There pure joyful voices and psalmody are heard that hymn and glorify from infinite gratitude the Savior Christ.
The Bridegroom who is called beautiful, beyond all men,
who has invited us, to a spiritual feast of your bridal chamber,
my ill-fortuned form, of the transgressions strip me,
by the exchange of your passions, and adorn me with a garment of glory,
of your beauty, a bright guest reveal me,
of your Queen as compassionate.
Another variation of the same theme but with quite new elements:
1. All grooms are beautiful at the time of the wedding, but the Groom Christ is the most beautiful of all grooms, He is "the most beautiful of all men." This is confirmed to us by the Theotokos herself, who before the temporarily dead Christ recalls the beauty He had throughout His entire life.
2. The hymnographer of the troparion does not speak of clothing but of spiritual focus. This reminds us of Gospel pericopes in which the Lord calls people to a meal who do not respond to His call and is compelled to turn to others who are humble yet chosen.
3. The hymnographer feels not that he has soiled his garment but that he has a deformity, which his transgressions have caused. He therefore begs with the power of the Holy Passions to remove his soiled garment and to put on him another robe, a robe of glory and beauty like that which the Light-Giver Christ possesses.
4. Thus he will be able to become a fellow guest with the Lord Christ, who out of boundless compassion clothed the wretched man and made him a radiant fellow guest.
Brides, however, are not only the wise virgins of the parable but also many souls who were sanctified by this divine love. One of these is Saint Irene, as the oikos of the service on her memory describes her.
The Oikos:
By the love of the Groom Christ, O All-Holy One, from infancy having been kindled with reverence, you ran, as a dark one thirsting for unfailing springs, and by your struggle having preserved yourself in the truly incorruptible bridal chamber of your Lord, you glorified,
as a renowned bride, adorned, embellished, you entered as a chosen one, seen crowned, having received from the incorruptible Groom, as a golden, reward of your struggle.
The Sweetest Jesus
O my sweet spring, my sweetest child, where have you lost Your beauty.
(from the Third Stanza of the Encomia of Great Friday)
The most beautiful of all mortals, as a lifeless corpse is laid down, He who beautified the nature of all things.
(from the First Stanza of the Encomia of Great Friday)
The hymnographer has a great perplexity: How is it possible that He who clothes all creation with beauty now lies disfigured without the former beauty of His form. A logical perplexity, but here it is not a simple dead man but a life-giving dead one, who for three days endured this humiliation, in order to make our souls beautiful.
Odes, First Tone
You suffered as a man, and willingly endured the cross,
You rose from the tomb, as from a bridal chamber having come forth,
that You might save the world, O Lord, glory to You.
The death chamber for the life-giving Christ becomes a bridal chamber, to receive the beloved souls, since they too will be raised by His life-giving power, and thus "the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord" (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17).
The hour, O soul, having understood the end,
and the cutting down, having seen the fig tree,
the talent given to you, work it zealously, O wretched one,
watching and judging:
Let us not be left outside the bridal chamber of Christ.
On the occasion of the drying up of the fig tree and its cutting for the fire, as well as the parable of the talents, the hymnographer emphasizes that one must work zealously in the spiritual struggle for the acquisition of the virtues, because otherwise one risks being cut down and, like a dry branch, thrown into the fire of damnation. One must therefore always be vigilant: "Let us not be left outside the bridal chamber of Christ."
In the troparia of the Divine Communion we encounter a verse that speaks of a burning longing for Christ, which transforms the person for the good, it is the good transformation, and makes him a ready recipient of Divine Grace.
"You have drawn me with longing, O Christ, and You have transformed me by Your divine love."
In the Divine Eucharist the priest confesses the surpassing love of Christ, in order to save us:
"You brought us from non-being into being, and having fallen, You raised us up again, and did not forsake us, doing all things, until You raised us to heaven and granted us Your coming kingdom" (Prayer of the Divine Liturgy).
The views of Christos Yannaras on eros.
It is worth looking at the views of a young thinker, Christos Yannaras, who has dealt extensively with the subject of eros. He believes that eros is a process that appears in the early stages of a person's life and begins with the nursing of the infant. The mother's milk is not only the infant's food but also a relationship of love, through which the infant is socialized, that is, is integrated into the social life of man. On the contrary, separation from this food creates insecurity in the infant and crying begins. This relationship is the first erotic relationship of man and is marked not only as a means of survival but also as a means of life. It is a possibility of life, a dynamic fullness of relationship, which is the characteristic of true eros. In this relationship, the role of the father is of decisive importance in the expansion and opening of the vital relationship into a social one.
The instinctive need of the infant for survival in the presence of the mother is progressively transformed from a demand into an embrace, from an impulse into a desire and a psychological need. In subsequent erotic searches, this interweaving of natural need with personal relationship is repeated. The danger that the relationship turns into use, the embrace into a demand, always exists in these relationships. The constant bond in these relationships is the loving power, the practice of love, the renunciation of the demand, the pursuit of the relationship and not the satisfaction of the need.
Yannaras emphasizes only one side of eros with regard to marriage. And the world says that "marriage kills eros." Of course, the legal relationship within the social conditions of the era introduces the obligatory character into the relationships of the spouses, but it is not exactly so. The spouses, since they were erotically connected, may be able to transform their eros into love, which is much deeper and more substantial. Love resolves all the problems that arise, which many times become occasions for the couple to be more tightly bound to each other.
The Apostle Paul places the marital relationships on solid foundations, which are characterized by erotic love: "Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, and He Himself is the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church. And the wife, that she may fear her husband" (Eph. 5:22-33). The words "be subject" and "fear" must not be misinterpreted, because this submission is a voluntary renunciation of the Ego, a voluntary renunciation from individual rights, a conscious respect for the sake of a person who loves his wife, as Christ loved the church and sacrificed Himself for it. This conscious submission and the inexhaustible love are those that bind the man and the woman, and thus their bond is indissoluble.
Unfortunately, there is a great distortion of the meaning of true eros when it becomes only the satisfaction or non-satisfaction of the sexual impulse. And we are not speaking of the commercial eros, which is joyless, torturous, and fruitless, but also of the customary arrangements in marital relationships within the circles of certain ecclesiastical circles. These circles identified eros with the terror of sin, virtue with the aversion to their own body, the physical expression of affection with the humble concessions to the flesh. Eros, as well as love, were sanctified in the spirit of Christ and became an occasion for a closer relationship of man with God, which has as its result absolute happiness.

26.09.2026
