HOPE - From Human Shaping to Divine Truth | Nelli Kronwald - Ladies Night 28 June 2025

Hope · main message Community · carrying Repentance

Hope that is grounded in God remains even when all earthly foundations such as career, marriage, or health collapse, because God himself is the sustaining foundation.

God does not say you will not experience it, but the great difference is that the foundation on which you build, when the storm comes, that is me, and I will carry you through it.

The text combines a psychological definition of hope with a biblical interpretation and presents God as the sustaining foundation in contrast to earthly sources of hope such as career, marriage, or health. The speaker tells of her own breakdown as a divorced, single mother and how she experienced God as a reliable foundation during that time. She uses the image of the house on the rock and the tree in the desert to show that divine hope sustains even in storms. The Japanese art form Kintsugi serves as a metaphor for the idea that broken things become more valuable through gold. The text calls on listeners to place their hope in God and to take courageous steps, even when the path seems uncertain. Science is invoked as confirmation of the biblical statements. The message is directed at women who have experienced disappointments and are seeking a firm foundation.

I had already been able to hear the poem beforehand, and it truly moved me very much. I don’t know, did it also affect you just now, this hope that was expressed through this one beautiful poem and also through this dance? I loved it. I find it truly wonderful, and yes, thank you so much, dear ones. I am truly glad to be here today. I am glad to be able to speak about the topic of hope today. Because I myself have experienced hope, I want to speak about it and simply cannot remain silent. Now, one might objectively say, well, a single mother, a divorced woman. Her perspective does not actually speak of a hopeful life, but I believe that I can still speak about hope, because I have been able to experience it so strongly in my life. And I truly feel it poured out deep within my heart. It is like a foundation that permeates me on the way with Jesus. And therefore, I would so like to speak to you today and hope and wish, as I already mentioned earlier, that each of you takes something for yourselves today evening, and that this seed germinates at home or even already this evening, that you can open yourselves to this topic and gain new hope. Exactly. I would like to start today, or I would like to begin first with a small theory on hope, as a student and psychologist, I simply love to find out what there is on the topic of hope, what has science discovered? How does science define hope? And then I came across, precisely, a study by the American psychologist Snyder. He had examined hope in people back then and found that hope can be defined as consisting of two core elements. I mean two core components, and they are like two gears. When they are active together, when they turn into each other, then the driving force of hope is created. This is, on the one hand, goal-directed thinking. Translated, this means, I know the way to the goal, and self-efficacy. That is, I know how I will travel this path. I believe I can accomplish this path. And precisely this psychologist found that the effect, when hope becomes this driving force, is that people gain a new driving force, that their well-being increases, that the stress level decreases, and that anxiety and depression also decrease. So a wonderful effect, when a person walks through life hopefully, right? And it is beautiful that studies can confirm that there are precisely such effects when we live hopefully. And I deliberately embedded this in a house, because I am convinced that every hope can only go as far as a force carries it, some kind of foundation that supports it from below. Because I could, for example, know, okay, my path is the study of psychology, and I can also demonstrate self-efficacy, saying, I believe I can complete my studies, but if I live in a country where a woman cannot study, I cannot carry it out, or then my hope is gone, or I put all my hope on a profession and know, I want to go this path and I can also accomplish it, but then it fails and I am dismissed, then this foundation also collapses again. That is, what I want to illustrate with this is that we often make our hope dependent on circumstances, on people, e.g., the spouse, on children, on professions, on material resources or finances, and how quickly can these crumble? How quickly can the foundation collapse and the hope be gone? I believe that today almost every woman, or actually every woman, lives or has lived a moment in her life where she puts all her hope has been placed and was truly ready and willing to walk this path, yet at the end realized that something had gotten in the way, that the house had collapsed, that my entire house lies in fragments, or at least the dream I had hoped for, or perhaps the health I had hoped for. And suddenly it is all gone. We are disappointed by the circumstances we depend on, and hope is gone. I have thought a lot about what hope means without God? And somehow it sometimes seems to me that if there is no foundation, it often remains mere wishful thinking. I hope, perhaps I will achieve it, but I cannot be sure, even if hope penetrates me in some way for a certain period. And there is another definition of hope, which I have brought with me for you today, from the perspective of the Bible. For there is a God who knows exactly, our Creator, who knows exactly what impact hope has on our life. Precisely that which science confirms. Science confirms in so many areas already what the Bible has written many thousands of years ago through the Holy Spirit. And God knows about the impact, about the positive effects, and offers us: I want to be your hope, my child. I created you and I want you to place your entire hope in me. Why? Because I want to be your sustaining reason. When people fall away, when the foundation on which you have built falls away, I am there. And He connects hope so strongly with faith and trust. Trust me, my child. Believe me, for if you believe in me, that is a foundation that bears weight. And the hope in God is at the same time the hope in what He says. He says to you: I am with you. Even if father or mother leave you, I will not leave you. I have a future-filled hope for you. God has given us so many promises that they also act as a driving force for us and give us openness and courage to move forward. And hope in God also often means that we let go of control and say: "Hey, somehow it seems to me right now as if no way leads through. But because I hope in you and because I stand on your promises, God, I believe and take courageous steps. I experienced the difference between the first and second house in my life when everything collapsed in me and God became the only thing that remained my foundation. When the house collapsed and only He was there, I experienced this difference between wishful thinking and hoping for something that may happen, and at the same time experiencing what it means to firmly stand for something and truly speak the truth about one's own life. I recently had a conversation with a mother who told me how she went through a painful phase in the hospital with her child. It was revealed to him. He was 5 years old at the time, that he has leukemia, and they had to go through numerous therapies, and she said, it was a noticeable difference. We suffered as a family. Seeing the son like that really hurt her from within, she did not want to see her son like that. And at the same time, they went to the hospital daily with a hope that carried them. And the people, the parents who were also there and whose children were also sick, looked at them and said, what do you have that we do not have? And they said, it is the hope we have in our God, who promises us that He is always with us and penetrates us. And I keep hearing this again and again from people who encounter people who have set their hope in God and ask, what is different with you? What carries you through this time? What I do not have. I want that too. And I want to speak precisely about this hope. A hope that does not become a disgrace, that does not disappoint us, because God is God and not man, and His lies, His His promises He never breaks. He is not a God who lies. I have brought you two verses that clearly illustrate this. Also the image of the house. Here it says in Matthew 7:24-25: "Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, yet it did not fall, because it had been built on the rock." And I will immediately move on to the next verse and summarize these two verses right away, because here you see a tree growing in the desert. And in Jeremiah 17:7-8 it is written: "But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him." God blesses the person who places his hope in Him. God loves it when we trust Him. And He compares him and says, he is like a tree planted by the water, that sends out its roots to the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves stay green. In a year of drought it does not worry, but keeps bearing fruit. This tree that you see there, that is a wonder considered a world wonder. That is the fig tree, the African one, and it actually grows in the desert and survives as the only tree. All year round it bears green leaves. Why? Because it drives its roots up to 120 meters deep to get the groundwater there and to feed and grow from it. And God promises us exactly this image. My child, my beloved daughter, even if you go through desert times, and that is also the image of the house standing on the rock, and behind it is water and above it is a storm, I am with you and I want to be your field. People who decide for God experience storms and experience downpours and experience the desert. God does not say, you will not experience it, but the great difference is that the foundation on which you build, when the storm comes, that is me, and I will carry you through it. That is the difference. And now that was, so to speak, the definition once from science and once from the Bible. And I would like to take you into my story to show you how it looked very practically, from a foundation that collapsed to a foundation that became firm. And through my story I have brought you something that will accompany us metaphorically. And that is, um, the Japanese art. Um, this is a traditional Japanese art form, and it is characterized by the fact that ceramics are broken and then these individual broken parts are put together, but not with a superglue that you cannot see, so that one should hardly recognize the cracks, but rather the opposite. One uses, for gluing together, a glue mixed with gold, with other substances, and repairs it in such a way that these breaks are not hidden, but visible. And these breaks, they confirm or are meant to represent exactly that the breaking in a person's life belongs to it just as much as the good times. And by the fact that this ceramic bowl was decorated with gold and glued together, it is even more valuable than before, than it was, without the gold between the cracks. That means, one gives the object after the breaking a higher value than it was before. And a visual or conceptual bridge to this, um, is also drawn by this samurai warrior, who has gone out for something to fight, has taken his side with his lord and has suffered in the process, has endured wounds, so or has endured pain, and also shows these afterwards full of pride. I was there. I fought for this conviction and I will carry this pride that I have here with my wounds I wish to present, I will not hide. And this image is simply meant to accompany us today through what, through this story that I wish to share with you, simply accompanies us. Now I need a quick sip. Exactly. I grew up in a household where, from a young age, I had formed an image of God that always depicted Him as the strict judge. If you truly imagine the whole thing visually with a picture frame, look into a picture frame, there is something inside, and when I looked at God, there was this strict judge, who watches everything I do wrong, who punishes me for every sin, who demands a great deal of performance from me so that I may come to heaven. And I know, my childhood and youth were internally characterized, even if I did not show it outwardly, by the fear of not making it, of not coming to heaven. And I also grew up with a low self-worth. Yes, so exactly, that is my self-image that I then had of myself, when I looked in the mirror, when I thought about myself. And self-image also means at the same time. My identity was weak. I had very many self-doubts, also had a low self-worth. At some point in my teenage years, although I was of normal weight, I fell into an eating disorder. I wanted to correspond to an ideal. And at some point I got to know a young man who suddenly showered me with a great deal of declarations of love, I was 15 years old at the time. I did not know him at all back then. And then I got into a relationship and I liked it. All the things that were spoken to me, you are the most beautiful, you are the best. I absorbed it like a sponge and in that moment I had hoped and my identity or my foundation was placed on this relationship. Now things will get better for me. Now my life will become easier. Now I have a person who desires me, who loves me, who shows me that I am wonderful in his eyes. And I truly longed for it and fell into a dependency, um, which simply blinded me to the fact that this relationship was totally unhealthy. We both suffered and I had to experience emotional pain again and again. Um, and I still remember on the day of my engagement I ran out and screamed: "I cannot." And yet I married this man, because I stood in such a dependency towards him, because I placed all my hope on him for a good life. That means, with the marriage I had a new hope. Okay, now it will surely be better, as man and woman he will treat me differently, and I placed my hope again on a marriage, on the wedding, and hoped so much that I would somehow find fulfillment in it. I have brought you a few pictures that simply depict a beautiful picture-book family. In the marriage it went just as badly, or even worse. There were really many hard years involved. So, we were in a long-distance relationship for 6 years and then another 6 years in the marriage. It was a hard struggle and my self-worth sank further and further down in this relationship. At some point I no longer knew who I even was. All the things that had been spoken to me, I accepted them and took on any and all guilt and thought, okay, I am to blame for everything, I must change. And then for a while it was a bit better and I wished so much for a child and then I became pregnant and I had such a hope, now it will be good, now we will become parents and now it will surely be better. And it was good for about half a year, the new adjustment, and then it got even worse. My daughter was one and a half years old when I had to leave the home with my daughter. We were asked to leave our home. We had planned to build a house. We had a I bought the property. There was so much hope for a future with a man, for a marriage, for a family. And with that departure, it simply shattered. And with the separation, this pain did not stop, because after that, it went on to many more pains, so there came very many more painful moments where I had to fight in court. I suffered greatly during this time, and when I once read Job, I don’t know which of you knows Job, he is a man in the Bible who experienced very, very much severe suffering, and I do not want to compare myself with him. Today, it is also fundamentally not about us comparing ourselves in some way. I have my story, and you have your story. I believe every single woman would come forward and could tell her story. But when I read these verses just now, I recognized myself in them, because Job describes it so with some, I will simply read a few sentences from it. I have to watch how people mock me. Oh God, vouch for me yourself. I have no one else who stands up for me. And they think about me, how godless must he be, and where has my hope gone? Where? Many lies were truly told about me. Many people thought, oh, she is no longer a Christian at all. She must have, what on earth did she do to her husband? Everything was reversed, and I stood there before a breakdown and thought to myself, wow, so it was truly in that moment a difficult time, and I perceived it in a similar way, exactly as is described here. And we are just coming here to this Kintsugi principle of breaking. That is how it felt. Suddenly, there was nothing left. Everything was broken. All that I had built, all my hope, the foundation was no longer there. The house of hope was broken. If you look at the picture, I believe that you certainly recall a moment when you felt exactly the same, when there was no more light at the end of the tunnel, when you no longer knew how to go on. I believe each of us knows such a situation. And then, dear ones, we are talking about hope today, a turning point came in my life. I was at a conference, we had been, we had been away from home for about a few months already. I was living with my sister, who had kindly taken us in. There I encountered God at a conference. There was no human involvement. No one persuaded me. And you know, I had heard for years, week after week I went to church, about who God is. But on that one day, God encountered me in a completely new way. Dear ones, it is difficult for me today to put into words what I experienced there. He took this image of Him that I had so diligently built, the frame into which I had put God and said, that is who God is for me, and outside the frame you do not fit. So, you must act as I say, so I had crafted you, so to speak, in my mind. God took this image and broke it. And instead showed me this. He said to me, Nelly, if you want to see who I am, then look at my Son. Look at what I was willing to give for you. Look at what Jesus did on the cross. For nowhere will you surely learn what the love of God means, except here at the cross of Golgotha, where Jesus gave His life for you, so that you receive new hope. And it looked exactly like that, that God led me out through a prison door. I was not really in a prison, but inside me so much was broken, and God led me out, out of this door of loneliness, out of the feelings of low self-worth, and all that, out of the breakdown, He brought me out through this prison door. In that moment, He gave me a crown instead of ashes, a new garment. What is meant by that? He spoke to me, to Nelly: "I Love yourself, and you are my beloved daughter. Nothing in this world could separate you from my love. Let go of what you believe about me. Let go and look at the cross. Look at me. And in that moment, I simply experienced something new coming into my life. God called me to enter a new world, the new world where He reigns, where His perspective rules over me—not what I think about myself, but what He says. And I must not stop at the cross. I may go on and say: “Okay, Lord, if You have bought my life at such a high price and I give it to You, then that means I also want to be on the journey in this new life, that I want to break all these false thought patterns, all the false frameworks I have set. I want to believe more what You say about me than what people say about me or what I say myself. And that is truly not easy when one has been receiving negative words for years. I still remember the moment—look, I was still a single mother, I was still separated, but that changed everything. God broke through and gave me new hope. And I still remember that moment when I was at my sister’s place, up in that apartment, and suddenly read that one verse. I love this verse, for I alone know what I am planning for you. I, the Lord, have peace for you and purpose, and I will free you from suffering. I will give you a future and a hope again. My word stands. I went to my sister’s place, showed her the Bible passage, and said, “Julia, God has a hopeful search for me and my daughter. I am so joyful.” And this joy was truly from the deepest part of my heart. I could not have faked it. In that moment, I knew, regardless of what had happened to me, my God has my future in His hand. He holds me firmly. I am His daughter, His beloved daughter, and He will not allow anything that would harm me and my daughter or cause us damage. And so He began to build a new foundation. He showed me through His word who He truly is. If you want to know who God is, that is the only way. Look into the Bible yourself. Become mature. See what God says about Himself. He changed the image I had of Him. For what you think about God, that is what you believe and that is how you live. He renewed the image of myself, not by saying, “Look at your failure, Nelly, and at all that you

Ich habe mir so Gedanken gemacht, was bedeutet Hoffnung ohne Gott? Was ist damit gemeint?
