The constant request for guidance in prayer is the greatest blessing because the human being is dependent on Allah in every moment to recognize, accept, carry out, persist in, and increase in the truth.
The text is an Islamic sermon about the greatest blessing of Allah, which consists in guidance to His religion. It begins with praise, a declaration of faith, and blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad. In the main part, it is explained why the Muslim repeats the request 'Guide us to the straight path' in every unit of prayer. The text names five reasons: guidance lies solely in Allah's hand, the human being is exposed to temptations, guidance increases and decreases, the human being is in constant need of guidance, and the goal is Paradise. Subsequently, the meaning of the request is broken down into five successive stages: recognition of the truth, acceptance, execution, persistence, and increase. The text concludes with the extension of the request to all areas of life, from the correctness of faith to the beauty of character.

The Greatest of Blessings
"ALL PRAISE IS DUE TO ALLAH, WHO CREATED THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH AND MADE THE DARKNESSES AND THE LIGHT. BUT THEN THOSE WHO DISBELIEVE IN THEIR LORD GIVE HIM EQUALS" [Al-An'am: 1], "ALL PRAISE IS DUE TO ALLAH. HE WILL SHOW YOU HIS SIGNS, AND YOU WILL RECOGNIZE THEM. AND YOUR LORD IS NOT UNAWARE OF WHAT YOU DO" [An-Naml: 93]... And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, "IT IS HE WHO HAS MADE THE SUN A SHINE AND THE MOON A LIGHT AND DETERMINED ITS PHASES THAT YOU MAY KNOW THE RECKONING OF YEARS AND CALCULATION. ALLAH HAS NOT CREATED ALL THIS EXCEPT IN TRUTH. HE DETAILS THE SIGNS FOR A PEOPLE WHO KNOW" [Yunus: 5]... And I bear witness that Muhammad ibn Abdullah is the servant of Allah and His Messenger, His chosen one and His intimate friend, the Imam of the Messengers, the Seal of the Prophets, the Leader of the white-faced, white-ankled ones, and the Master of the children of Adam all together... O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad among the first, and send blessings upon him among the last, and send blessings upon him until the Day of Judgment, and upon his family and his companions and those who follow them with righteousness until the Day of Judgment...
As for what follows: Fear Allah, O servant of Allah. Fear Allah wherever you are, and guard Allah and He will guard you, and leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt, and follow a bad deed with a good deed and it will erase it, and treat people with good character, "AND ESTABLISH PRAYER AT THE TWO SIDES OF THE DAY AND AT THE APPROACHES OF THE NIGHT. DEEDS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS REMOVE MISDEEDS. THAT IS A REMINDER FOR THOSE WHO REMEMBER. AND BE PATIENT, FOR VERILY ALLAH DOES NOT WASTE THE REWARD OF THE RIGHTEOUS" [Hud: 114]...
O noble believers: There is no doubt that the blessing of guidance to this religion is among the greatest of Allah's blessings upon His servants, if not the greatest blessing of all... He, the Most High and Exalted, said: "THEY SHOW FAVOR TO YOU BECAUSE THEY HAVE SUBMITTED. SAY: 'DO NOT SHOW FAVOR TO US FOR YOUR SUBMISSION. RATHER, IT IS ALLAH WHO SHOWS FAVOR TO YOU FOR THAT HE HAS GUIDED YOU TO FAITH, IF YOU ARE TRUTHFUL'" [Al-Hujurat: 17]... And in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "By Allah, that Allah should guide one man through you is better for you than having the red camels"...
And Allah has legislated for the Muslim to repeatedly seek guidance throughout the day and the night dozens of times... And through the greatest surah in the Quran... For in every rak'ah of the prayer, whether obligatory or voluntary, the Muslim must supplicate to his Lord saying: "GUIDE US TO THE STRAIGHT PATH" [Al-Fatihah: 6]...
And there is no doubt that behind this are great causes and wisdoms:
The first is that the fate of man and his salvation are connected to his guidance, and his success in guidance and his uprightness and his steadfastness upon it, all of it is in the hand of Allah alone... He alone, exalted is He, is the Guide of whom He wills, and the Misleader of whom He wills... And Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said to the noblest of His creation, peace and blessings be upon him: "INDEED, YOU CANNOT GUIDE WHOM YOU LOVE, BUT ALLAH GUIDES WHOM HE WILLS" [Al-Qasas: 56]... And He also said to him: "AND IF IT HAD NOT BEEN THAT WE FIRMED YOU, YOU ALMOST WOULD HAVE INCLINED TOWARD THEM A LITTLE" [Al-Isra: 74]... And among the supplication of the believers in the Quran: "OUR LORD, DO NOT LET OUR HEARTS DEVIATE AFTER YOU HAVE GUIDED US" [Aal Imran: 8]... And in the authentic hadith, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said while praising his Lord, blessed and exalted, on the day of Uhud: "O Allah, there is no One who gathers what You have spread, nor one who spreads what You have gathered, nor one who guides whom You have misled, nor one who misleads whom You have guided, nor one who gives what You have withheld, nor one who withholds what You have given, nor one who brings near what You have kept far, nor one who keeps far what You have brought near"... And in the authentic hadith, he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There is no heart except that it is suspended between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful. If He wills, He makes it upright, and if He wills, He makes it deviate"...
So if guidance and steadfastness upon uprightness are all in the hand of Allah alone, then it is no wonder that man should increase in supplication and humility to his Lord: "GUIDE US TO THE STRAIGHT PATH" [Al-Fatihah: 6]...
And there is a second reason: which is that the Muslim is often exposed to confusing doubts, enticing desires, and trials like pieces of the dark night that surround him from every direction... As the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said in the authentic hadith: "Hasten to do good deeds before trials like pieces of the dark night, when a man will become a believer in the morning and a disbeliever in the evening, or a disbeliever in the evening and a believer in the morning, selling his religion for a worldly price"... So if the trials are of this dangerous nature, then he is in most need of clinging to Allah, and asking Him for guidance and steadfastness and safety from trials... He, the Most High, said: "AND WHOEVER CLINGS TO ALLAH HAS BEEN GUIDED TO A STRAIGHT PATH" [Aal Imran: 101]...
And the third reason is that guidance, like faith, increases and decreases. Allah, the Most High, said about the Companions of the Cave: "Indeed, they were young men who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance" [Al-Kahf: 13]. And He, the Exalted, said: "And those who guided themselves, He increased them in guidance and bestowed upon them righteousness" [Muhammad: 17]. And Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "When a servant believes in the Book and is guided by it in a general sense, that becomes a cause for other guidances to be attained by him, for guidances have no end, even if the servant reaches whatever he reaches therein."
So if guidance increases and decreases, then it is in need of care and of persistent supplication, so that the Muslim may increase in guidance and be saved from decrease and ruin.
And the fourth reason is that a person is in continuous need of guidance. So his repetition of the request for guidance: "Guide us to the straight path" [Al-Fatihah: 6], is a renewed acknowledgment of his poverty to Allah and his continuous need for Him to guide him in every moment of his moments and in every affair of his affairs of life.
And the fifth reason, and the last one, is attaining Paradise and being saved from the Fire. Allah, the Most High, says on the tongue of the people of Paradise: "And they will say: All praise is due to Allah, who guided us to this, and we would never have been guided had it not been that Allah guided us" [Al-A'raf: 43].
So if we know why we repeat the request for guidance in every rak'ah, then let us reflect: What is the guidance that we ask Allah to bestow upon us? And what are the things we want when we supplicate to our Lord: "Guide us to the straight path" [Al-Fatihah: 6]?
Guidance, first of all, is that the servant be enabled to know the truth that Allah, the Most High, wants from him. Second: that he be enabled to accept the truth and respond to it. Third: that he be enabled to carry out its implementation in the required manner. Fourth: that he be enabled to remain steadfast and continue upon it until he meets Allah. Fifth: that he be enabled to increase in guidance.
And upon this, the guidance that we ask Allah for encompasses five successive guidances:
Guidance to know the truth that Allah wants from us: So in Sahih Muslim, it is narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would begin his night prayer with the words: "O Allah, Lord of Jibril, Mikail, and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, You judge between Your servants in that over which they used to differ. Guide me to the truth in that over which there is disagreement by Your permission; indeed, You guide whom You will to a straight path."
And the second guidance is that Allah enable you to accept the truth and respond to it. Allah, the Most High, said: "So whoever Allah wishes to guide, He expands his breast for Islam" [Al-An'am: 125].
And the third guidance is that Allah enable you to carry out the required deed in the best manner. So whoever strives and makes effort, Allah honors him with guidance and steadfastness. Allah, the Most High, said: "And those who strive for Us, We will surely guide them to Our ways" [Al-'Ankabut: 69]. And Allah, the Most High, said: "And if they had done what they are advised to do, it would have been better for them and more firming" [An-Nisa: 66].
And the fourth guidance is that Allah enable you to remain steadfast upon the truth and continue upon it. So in the authentic hadith, among the most frequent supplications of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was: "O Allah, O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion."
And the fifth guidance is that Allah enable you to increase in guidance and righteousness. Allah, the Most High, said: "And those who guided themselves, He increased them in guidance and bestowed upon them righteousness" [Muhammad: 17]. And Allah, the Most High, said: "And Allah increases in guidance those who are guided" [Maryam: 76].
And therefore, the Muslim cannot do without this great supplication: "Guide us to the straight path" [Al-Fatihah: 6]. Because he may not be guided to what Allah intends in the first place, and he may be enabled to that but not enabled to accept it and act upon it; and he may be enabled to act upon it, but not enabled to continue and remain steadfast upon it, and to increase in guidance and righteousness.
So the supplication for guidance encompasses all of that: that Allah guide him to the truth, and that He guide him to accept the truth, and that He guide him to act upon it, and that He guide him to remain steadfast and continue upon it, and that He guide him to increase in guidance and righteousness.
And the matter is broader than we imagine, O noble ones. So the Muslim does not ask Allah for guidance in his religion only, but he asks Him for it in every affair of his affairs of life.
So he asks Him for guidance to know Tawhid and the correctness of belief, and he asks Him for guidance to understand what Allah intends and what His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, intends, and to respond to that, and he asks Him for guidance to the correctness of worship and that it be in the required manner.
And he asks Him for guidance to good character, and to maintaining family ties, and to doing good and restraining from harm.
And he asks Him for guidance to the correct decision when the paths branch out before him and opinions differ upon him.
And he asks Him for guidance to repentance when he sins, and to gratitude when he is given, and to patience and contentment when he is tested, and to excellence when it is decreed. And to everything that benefits him in his religion and his worldly life.
There is no matter among the matters of the servant in which he does not stand in need of the guidance of Allah in it... For this reason, it was among the supplications of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency"...
And in Sahih Muslim, it is narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: "Say: O Allah, guide me and set me right, and by guidance, mention Your guidance, and by setting right, mention the straightness of the arrow"...
And thus, O servants of Allah, something of the greatness of guidance becomes apparent to us, and the importance of this great supplication which we repeat in every rak'ah: ﴿Guide us to the straight path﴾ [Al-Fatihah: 6]...
As for how we attain guidance and steadfastness, that is what we will discuss in the second khutbah, if Allah wills. I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful: ﴿O People of the Scripture, our Messenger has come to you, making clear to you much of what you used to conceal from the Scripture, and overlooking much. There has come to you from Allah a Light and a clear Scripture, by which Allah guides those who follow His pleasure to the paths of peace, and brings them out of the darknesses into the Light by His permission, and guides them to a straight path﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 15]...
I say what you hear...
The Second Khutbah
Praise be to Allah, and that is sufficient, and prayers and peace be upon His servants whom He has chosen...
As for what follows: Fear Allah, O servants of Allah, and be with the truthful, and be among ﴿those who listen to the statement and then follow the best of it. Those are the ones whom Allah has guided, and those are the ones who are the people of understanding﴾ [Az-Zumar: 18]...
O noble believers: If guidance is of this great degree of importance, and if we are in need of it in every moment, how do we attain it? Then how do we remain steadfast upon it and increase in it?
Indeed, among the mercy of Allah to His servants is that He made for guidance easy causes, and whoever takes them, Allah guides him, makes him steadfast, and increases him in guidance...
So the greatest, nearest, and strongest of the causes of guidance is: turning to the Book of Allah, reciting it, reflecting upon it, learning from it, and acting upon it... Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most suitable﴾ [Al-Isra: 9]... So the guidance of the Quran is a distinguished guidance, for it guides to the most perfect and best methodology... ﴿Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most suitable﴾ [Al-Isra: 9]... It guides to the most upright beliefs, the most upright acts of worship, the most upright morals, the most upright dealings, and the most upright paths in every matter of the matters of life... Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿There has come to you from Allah a Light and a clear Scripture, by which Allah guides those who follow His pleasure to the paths of peace, and brings them out of the darknesses into the Light by His permission, and guides them to a straight path﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 15]...
Just as the companionship of the Noble Quran is the greatest of the causes of steadfastness. Allah, the Exalted, said: ﴿Say: The Holy Spirit has brought it down from your Lord in truth, to make steadfast those who have believed, and as a guidance and good news for the Muslims﴾ [An-Nahl: 102], and Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿Thus, We have made it firm in your heart, and We have recited it with a measured recitation﴾ [Al-Furqan: 32]... Just as there is a special exhortation to reflect upon the stories of the Quran, for they are among the greatest of the causes of steadfastness. Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿And all of them, We relate to you from the news of the messengers that by which We make firm your heart﴾ [Hud: 120]...
For this reason, the Muslim must strengthen his relationship with the Quran, for the more the Muslim increases in connection with the Quran, the more his share of guidance and steadfastness increases... Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿And those who were guided, He increased them in guidance and bestowed upon them piety﴾ [Muhammad: 17]...
And among the strongest of the causes of steadfastness upon guidance is acting upon knowledge and exhortations, and not being content with listening and learning only. Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿And if they had done what they are exhorted to do, it would have been better for them and stronger in steadfastness﴾ [An-Nisa: 66]...
Just as the frequent remembrance of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, is among the causes of steadfastness upon guidance, for remembrance is the life of the hearts, the tranquility of the souls, and an aid to steadfastness. Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿O you who have believed, when you meet a faction, stand firm and remember Allah much that you may be successful﴾ [Al-Anfal: 45]...
And among the causes of steadfastness upon guidance is leaving oppression and sins, for when sins accumulate, they darken the hearts, and the servant may deviate from guidance because of his persistence upon them. Allah, the Exalted, said: ﴿So when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate, and Allah does not guide the people who are defiantly disobedient﴾ [As-Saff: 5]...
And among the causes is choosing righteous companionship. Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿And be patient with your soul along with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His face, and do not let your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornment of the worldly life, and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair has been excess﴾ [Al-Kahf: 28]...
And among the strongest causes of steadfastness upon guidance is persisting with Allah in supplication. Allah, the Most High, said: "Say: 'What does my Lord care about you if it were not for your supplication?'" [Al-Furqan: 77], and He, the Most High, said: "Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower." [Aal Imran: 8]. And the most frequent supplication of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was: "O Allah, O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion."
We ask Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, to guide us to His straight path, and to make us steadfast upon the truth and guidance, and to grant us determination upon righteousness, and to increase us in guidance and piety, and to protect us from trials, whether apparent or hidden...
O son of Adam, live as long as you wish, for you will surely die. Love whom you wish, for you will surely be separated from them. Do as you wish, for you will surely be recompensed for it. Goodness does not perish, and sin is not forgotten, and the Judge does not die. And as you judge, so shall you be judged.
