Pindar's choral poetry lends athletic victories an ethical and timeless dimension that goes beyond the mere competitive event, through the connection with myth and divine favour.
The glorious death of Diagoras
The age of Diagoras prepared for him a glorious end, which concerns the triumph of his sons at the Olympic Games and the touching moment of his death.
The text presents the ancient poet Pindar as a central but often overlooked representative of choral poetry in modern Greek education. It analyses the 7th Olympian victory ode to Diagoras of Rhodes and explains its three-part structure of praise, myth, and return to the present. Pindar is described as a poet who follows traditional forms but transcends them through individual genius. The work connects the athletic victory of the athlete with divine favour and the mythic origin of his home island. A central motif is the transformation of human error into divine blessing through poetic eternalisation. The text emphasises the function of poetry as a social good that confers glory and immortality. It is argued that Pindar's work highlights the ethical dimension of victory and the connection between the human and the divine.

PINDAR'S 7TH OLYMPIC ODE: TO DIAGORAS OF RHODES
If Homer is the giant of epic poetry, Alcaeus and Sappho of lyric poetry, Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides of dramatic poetry, then Pindar is the giant of choral poetry. Unfortunately, however, we know neither choral poetry nor its foremost representative, Pindar. Romanos the Melodist was called the Pindar of ecclesiastical poetry, yet we know very few things about him. And yet he is a name that shines in Greek letters, for he is the foremost hymnist not only of the Olympic Games but also of the Nemean, Pythian, and Isthmian Games.
Let us say a few things about Pindar and let us analyze one of the most famous Olympics, the 7th, "To Diagoras."
Pindar is undoubtedly the most brilliant choral lyric poet of antiquity. He was born in Cynoscephalae in Boeotia (very close to Thebes) in 518 BC, approximately seven years after the birth of Aeschylus in Athens. We do not know much about his life, but many anecdotes are told about his poetic genius.
He devoted himself to poetry for over half a century. His first ode, the 10th Pythian, was written in 498 BC, when he was twenty years old, and the last, the 8th Pythian, in 446 BC. He composed his most beautiful odes in the decades 480–460 BC. He died in Argos at the age of 80.
The entirety of Pindar's work includes almost all the genres of choral poetry: hymns, paeans, dithyrambs, laments, encomia, partheneia (choral songs for maidens, performed by a chorus of maidens), processional songs, hyporchemata, and Epinicians (in 4 books).
The Epinicians are the famous odes that were written, after commission, to honor the victory of renowned athletes in the Panhellenic games at Olympia, at Delphi, at the Isthmus, and at Nemea. From all this volume of Pindaric production, 44 Epinicians survive intact: 14 Olympics, 12 Pythians, 11 Nemeans, and 7 Isthmians.
The choral lyric song, which Pindar serves masterfully, reaches its peak in the first half of the 5th century. In contrast, the monodic lyric song, as developed by Sappho, Alcaeus, Ibycus, and others, flourishes during the 6th century.
Hymns, paeans, dithyrambs, and partheneia were performed at public festivals, local or Panhellenic, in the courtyards of great benefactors, in the houses of cultivated tyrants who protected and encouraged these initiatives. It is the era in which the wealthy and cultivated patrons of poetry commission poets to write encomia, laments, wedding songs (hymenaei), and above all epinician odes. For a fee, of course. Much is said about Pindar's earnings and his avarice. Most of it is unfair.
Pindar himself never concealed this activity, which was evidently socially established and accepted both by the wealthy commissioners and by the poets. The Pindaric poetic "transaction" has to do with the value and function of poetry as a recognized social good, as a precious spiritual and social product. In the 1st Pythian, Pindar urges Hieron, who has won in the chariot race, to spend generously if he wants his fame and glory to be preserved in the future.
However, for every Epinician to remain in the memory of men and through it the noble victor to be immortalized (in the chariot, in the race, in wrestling, in boxing, in the pentathlon, and wherever else), the poet of the ode, Pindar in this case, beyond the aid of the Muses, will need to enlist his poetic daemon, the greatness of his spirit, as Longinus says, referring to the poet.
Ancient Greek poetry, and ancient Greek art in general, is the product of a combination: it is based on a traditional "type" that the artist and the poet are obliged to overturn at every moment. The creator is obliged to follow a series of traditional forms, but at the same time he is obliged to overturn and transcend them.
Structure of the Epinician
The Epinician is based on a basic three-part structure:
A: praise of the victor in the present.
A reference to the mythological past, related to the family of the honored one, intervenes, and then it returns to the present.
B: praise of the victor in the present.
This structure appears in Pindar but always in a variety of variations. A Pindaric ode is like a musical symphony, where the composer follows the traditional symphonic form, but at the same time enriches it with successive variations. In Pindar's three-part structure, its unity is more organic than mechanical. Pindar, on the occasion of a specific person, establishes and highlights the sense of an indestructible heroic ethic which the honored victor serves.
ANALYSIS OF THE 7TH OLYMPIC
The 7th Olympic of Pindar is one of the most famous, brilliant, and technically perfect epinician hymns of antiquity. It was written in 464 BC to honor the victory of Diagoras of Rhodes in boxing, during the 79th Olympiad. This hymn was so popular that, according to tradition, it was written in golden letters in the temple of Athena in Lindos on Rhodes.
The Structure and Content of the Hymn
Pindar follows the classical structure of his epinician hymns, connecting the present (the victory of the athlete) with the mythological past of his homeland.
The Introduction (Proem): The poet compares his hymn to a golden cup of wine that a father offers to his son-in-law at a wedding. In the same way, Pindar offers the "nectar of the Muses" to the victor to glorify him.
The Praise of the Athlete: Diagoras is eulogized, a giant in the literal sense (he was exceptionally large in stature), who won in a fair manner (euthymachos), without deceit. Reference is also made to his father, Damagetos, and to their glorious lineage.
The Mythological Part (The Center of the Hymn): Instead of a single myth, Pindar weaves three successive myths concerning the island of Rhodes, placed in reverse chronological order (from the most recent to the most ancient):
Tlepolemus: The settler of Rhodes who arrived on the island pursued, after he accidentally killed his uncle Lycimnius. He was purified and became a hero of the island.
The Heliades and Athena: The sons of Helios forgot to bring fire for the sacrifice to Athena who had just been born. Despite their mistake, Zeus rained gold on the island and Athena granted them the art of making statues that looked alive.
The Birth of Rhodes: When Zeus was dividing the Earth among the gods, Helios was absent and remained without a share. But Helios saw emerging from the sea a beautiful island. Zeus granted it to him, and Helios named it Rhodes, after the nymph Rhodes whom he loved there.
We will then present the first and third sections and omit the second section, the mythological element.
OLYMPIC 7
A: praise (introductory)
Like the one who gives—raising the cup with dignity—
to his young son-in-law the all-golden cup
filled to the brim with the freshness of the vine
and offers—drinking a toast to his health—
the priceless gift as a bond of the old household with the new
and honors the wedding symposium, but also elevates the young man
among the friends for the enviable matching of the marriage.
Similarly now I too the sweet fruit of my soul,
which is pure nectar and is a gift of the Muses,
bestowing on victorious men I gladden the hearts of those
who win at the Olympic and Pythian games.
And it is true that blessed is he whom good fame surrounds.
But envious Charis accompanies another each time
with a sweet-sounding lyre and with many-voiced auloi.
With these instruments as accompaniment, I have come here too.
together with Diagoras, praising the sea-born daughter of Aphrodite,
the bride of Helios, that my hymn may be a praise
to the giant, fearless man, to the boxer who won
a victor's crown by the bank of the Alpheus river
and by Castalia, but also to his father, Damagetus,
who is the pride of Dike; and both, together with noble Argives,
dwell on the three-crowned island, opposite the wedge of great Asia.
..……………………………………………………………………………..
Second Ode of Praise
And Diagoras, with the flowers of these contests,
was crowned twice; again four times
he took first place in the contests of the glorious Isthmus,
in Nemea again and again, and also
on the rocky land of Athens.
The bronze of Argos knows him, the prizes of Thebes and the Arcadians,
the well-ordered contests of the Boeotians; Pellene also knows him;
and Aegina honored him as victor six times, and the same
stone stele of Megara tells of him.
But, Zeus, father, you, who have your throne above
the peak of Atabyrion, now accept this hymn of mine,
the Olympian, and honor the man who with his fist
wins the glory of victory; and make him honored by all—citizens and strangers alike; for he walks the straight road,
which hubris hates, always; since he knows well
to keep in his soul the teachings that
the wisdom of the glorious ancestors taught him.
Epilogue
Never let the proud seed of the race
of Calliades fall into oblivion. With the joys of the Eratidae
the whole city now rejoices. But a single moment of time
is enough, and the winds may blow elsewhere.
Central Themes and Philosophy
Human Error and Divine Grace: In all three myths, the motif of "error" or "omission" prevails. However, through divine intervention, all errors are transformed into blessing and glory. This is a message of hope for the fickle human fate.
The Connection to the Divine: The victory of Diagoras is not merely the result of physical strength, but divine favor. His family (the Eratidae) is directly connected to the gods and heroes of the island.
Immortality through Poetry: Pindar emphasizes that athletic triumphs are forgotten if they are not recorded by poetry. The hymn is what grants eternal posthumous fame.
Pindar's Seventh Olympian Ode, dedicated to the Rhodian boxer Diagoras, stands out for its rich symbolism and deep philosophical dimensions. Through keywords such as "euthymachon" (the honorable fighter) and "hygiei" (moral rectitude), the poet extols not only physical excellence but also spiritual balance. The characteristic images, such as the transfer of the golden cup and the rain of gold from Zeus, highlight divine favor and the value of poetry, while simultaneously underscoring the fickle and imperfect nature of mortals.
The Glorious End of Diagoras
The old age of Diagoras reserved for him a glorious end, concerning the triumph of his sons at the Olympic Games and the moving moment of his death.
During the 83rd Olympiad (448 BC), the two eldest sons of Diagoras, Damagetus and Acusilaus, were crowned Olympic champions on the same day: one in pankration and the other in boxing. Filled with pride, the two young athletes ran toward their elderly father, who was watching from the stands. They placed the crowns of wild olive (kotinos) on his head, lifted him onto their shoulders, and began to carry him around the stadium, greeted with thunderous applause from the crowd.
As the stadium was in a frenzy, a spectator from Sparta called out from the crowd the awe-filled phrase:
"Kathane, Diagora, ouk eis Olympion anabēse!"
(Die, Diagoras, for you will not ascend to Olympus!)
This phrase meant that Diagoras had experienced absolute human happiness and glory. Since he could not become a god and ascend to Olympus, the best moment to die was that one, so that he would never again know sorrow.
Hearing these words, Diagoras, moved and filled with absolute happiness, breathed his last on the shoulders of his children, inside the stadium of Olympia.
Callipateira by Lourentzos Mavilis
The poem "Callipateira" narrates the historical act of a woman who violates the rules of the Olympic Games in order to see her son compete, highlighting themes of courage, family devotion, and respect for tradition. The poem was written in 1895 (on the occasion of the upcoming, in 1896, revival of the Olympic Games in Athens), but was published in 1899 in the magazine Techne.
The Poem
"Noble Rhodian lady, how did you get in?
A custom ancient drives women away
from here." – "I have a nephew, Eucles,
three brothers, a son, a father, Olympic victors;
you must let me in, Hellanodikai,
and I too to take pride in the beautiful
bodies, who for the lion's skin of Heracles
struggle, admiring souls of manly strength.
With the other women I am not alike
in the age my lineage will appear
with the imperishable privileges of manliness.
In gold letters it glorifies
on a shining marble pedestal
a golden hymn of the immortal Pindar.
Callipateira was the daughter of the Olympic victor Diagoras of Rhodes.
Relationship and Family History
Father: Diagoras of Rhodes was a legendary Olympic victor in boxing and with many other victories in the Panhellenic games.
Relatives: She was also sister, mother, and aunt of other Olympic victors.
The Event: Disguised as an athlete, she entered the stadium of the Olympic Games to watch her son, Pysirrhodus, compete.
The Amnesty: Although women were punished with death if they entered the stadium, Callipateira was not punished due to the enormous contribution of her family to athletics.
Structure of the Poem
The poem is divided into two main sections:
First Section (vv. 1-3): The prohibition of the Hellanodikai towards women to watch the games is presented.
Second Section (vv. 4-14): Callipateira attempts to persuade the Hellanodikai, listing her Olympic victor relatives and requesting to watch her son's competition.
Development of the theme in a dialogic manner
A. The question of the Hellanodikai, who are surprised by the presence of a woman in the audience of the Olympic Games: although their address to Callipateira (v. 1 "Noble lady") reveals the respect they bear towards her person, nevertheless they emphasize to her that she must leave.
B. The response of Callipateira:
listing of the Olympic victors of her family [climax: it starts from second-degree relatives and reaches first-degree relatives]
request to watch the Games
observation that she is not like the other women, justification (descent from a distinguished lineage)
proof of the glory of her generation is that even Pindar recorded the achievements of her relatives.
Lourentzos Mavilis was born in 1860 on Ithaca but spent most of his life in Corfu where he was connected by friendship with the student of Dionysios Solomos, Iakovos Polylos. He studied philology, linguistics, and philosophy in Germany and participated in the revolutionary struggle of Crete and Epirus, during which he was wounded. His patriotic action continued in the Balkan Wars in which he voluntarily took part. He was killed on the front of Epirus in 1912.

«Αρχόντισσα Ροδίτισσα, Πώς μπήκες;
