The Revelation of John is a prophetic-eschatological and pastoral book that admonishes the faithful to patience and vigilance and shows the unity of biblical revelation from its preparation in the Old Testament to its fulfillment in the New Testament.

The book was not written to frighten or to satisfy curiosity about the future, but to advise, support, and guide the faithful of that time (who were being persecuted) and of every time.

The text analyzes the Revelation of John as a multifaceted book that combines prophetic, eschatological, and pastoral elements. It organizes the Revelation into its main sections, from the seven churches to the New Jerusalem. The forms of revelation in the Old Testament are then classified into four categories: theophanies, prophetic revelations, revelation through history, and apocalyptic literature. The connection between the Old and New Testaments is established through four axes: the fulfillment of messianic prophecies, typology, the transition from Law to Grace, and revelation itself. The text quotes from a translation by Odysseas Elytis in order to illustrate the imagery of the Revelation. The core message is that the Revelation does not serve fear or curiosity, but the strengthening and guidance of the faithful in persecution and vigilance. The text emphasizes the unity of biblical revelation from its preparation in the Old Testament to its fulfillment in the New Testament.

The Revelation of John and the Revelations of Holy Scripture Interpretation of Holy Scripture 22.09.2026 Michalis Koutsos, Philologist – Author Introduction The Revelation is the most revelatory book of the New Testament but at the same time the most difficult to interpret. Yet it is always in the news, whether out of curiosity, out of interest, or out of a desire for constructive benefit. The Revelation of John is a complex text that combines all three elements (prophetic, visionary, and advisory), but its dominant theological and literary identity is prophetic and eschatological (visionary), with a strong advisory and pastoral character. One does not exclude the other; rather, they function complementarily: Prophetic Element The Revelation clearly self-identifies as a prophecy (Rev. 1:3: "Blessed is the one who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy"). In the Jewish and Christian tradition, prophecy is not merely the prediction of the future, but the conveyance of the will of God into the present. John speaks in the name of God to judge injustice, to unmask the masks of worldly power (e.g., of the Roman Empire, of his time), and to announce His justice. Visionary / Eschatological Element It is a quintessentially visionary book, as it "lifts the veil" (this is what the word revelation means) and allows a glimpse into the future of humanity and the end of history (the Eschaton). Generally it describes in visionary terms: The final conflict between good and evil. The fall of the dark forces. The Final Judgment. The coming of the "New Jerusalem," that is, the triumph of the Kingdom of God. Advisory / Pastoral Element The book was not written to frighten or to satisfy curiosity about the future, but to advise, to support, and to guide the faithful of that time (who were persecuted) as well as of every age. The Letters to the Seven Churches (Chapters 2-3) have a clearly advisory, corrective, and consoling character. It advises Christians to show patience, faith, and spiritual vigilance, avoiding compromise with idolatry and the corruption of the world. The Revelation of John is the last book of the New Testament, written by John the Evangelist during his exile on Patmos, and it describes the final reckoning of God with evil and the triumphant victory of good. Main Sections and Summary of the Revelation Introduction and the Seven Churches (Ch. 1-3): John receives the vision from Jesus Christ and addresses letters with advice, corrections, and exhortations to seven local churches of Asia Minor (Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea). The Book with the Seven Seals (Ch. 4-8): The book of divine judgment is opened by the Lamb (Christ). The four horsemen of the Apocalypse appear, along with the souls of the martyrs and the portents of the end times. The Seven Trumpets (Ch. 8-11): Angels sound the trumpets and cause destructions in nature and in humanity, as calls to repentance, while the two Witnesses are presented. The Woman, the Dragon, and the Beasts (Ch. 12-14): A symbolic struggle between good (the Woman and the child) and evil (the red Dragon/Satan). The two Beasts (from the sea and from the earth) appear and the symbolic number 666 is established. The Seven Bowls of Wrath (Ch. 15-16): The final wrath of God is poured out with plagues upon the godless, leading to the great battle in the place called Armageddon. The Fall of Babylon and the Final Judgment (Ch. 17-20): The "Great Harlot" (Babylon, symbol of the corrupted worldly power) is condemned. Satan is bound for 1,000 years, followed by the final judgment before the White Throne and the definitive destruction of the Devil in the lake of fire. New Heaven and New Earth (Chapters 21-22): The descent of the New Jerusalem is described, the eternal presence of God among men, without pain or death, and the conclusion of the book with the promise of the swift coming of Christ. The Revelations of the Old Testament The revelations of the Old Testament refer to the unique moments in which God reveals Himself, His will, and His plan for the salvation of humanity through events, persons, and prophecies. In theology, the Old Testament is considered the preparatory period that prepares the world for the coming of the Messiah. The main forms of revelation in the Old Testament are classified into four major categories: Theophanies (Direct Revelation) God reveals Himself directly to men, often through natural phenomena or visions: The burning and unconsumed bush: God reveals to Moses His holy Name ("I am He Who is"). The giving of the Law at Sinai: The revelation of the Ten Commandments amid a storm, smoke, and thunderbolts. The vision of Isaiah: The sight of the Throne of God in the Temple, surrounded by Seraphim. The Prophetic Revelations The Prophets function as the "mouth" of God. Through them are revealed: Judgment and mercy: The need for repentance of the people and the warning about the consequences of apostasy. The Messianic Prophecies: Details about the birth, passion, and glory of Christ (e.g., the "suffering Servant" in Isaiah, the birth in Bethlehem in Micah). Revelation through History In the Old Testament, history is not accidental, but the field of God's action: The Exodus from Egypt: The greatest revelation of God as Redeemer and Liberator. The Covenants: The revelations of the faithfulness of God to Noah, Abraham, and David. Apocalyptic Literature In later books, revelation takes the form of complex symbolic visions about the end of time: The Book of Daniel: It includes visions about the fall of the earthly empires and the establishment of the eternal Kingdom of God. The Revelations of the New Testament The revelations of the Old Testament are connected to the New Testament through four main axes: The Fulfillment of the Messianic Prophecies The prophecies of the Old Testament function as the "identity" of the Messiah, which Jesus Christ fully verifies in the New Testament: The Birth: The prophecy of Isaiah about the birth from the Virgin ("behold, the virgin shall conceive in her womb") and of Micah about Bethlehem are fulfilled in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The Passion: The "suffering Servant" of Isaiah (chapter 53), who bears the sins of men, and the descriptions of the Psalms (e.g., Psalm 22: "they divided my garments") describe the Crucifixion with precision. The Resurrection: The prophecy of Jonah (the three days in the belly of the fish) is used by Christ Himself as the preeminent sign of His three-day Resurrection. Typology (Persons and Events as "Shadows") Many persons and events of the Old Testament constitute "types" (prefigurations) of Christ and the Church: Moses and Christ: Moses freed the people from the slavery of Egypt and gave the Law. Christ frees humanity from the slavery of sin and brings the Law of Love. Melchizedek: The mysterious king and priest of the Old Testament prefigures the eternal priestly office of Christ (Epistle to the Hebrews). The Manna and the Brazen Serpent: The manna in the wilderness prefigures the Mystery of the Divine Eucharist, while the lifting up of the serpent in the wilderness by Moses foreshadows the Elevation of Christ on the Cross for the salvation of men. The Transition from the Law to Grace The revelation of God at Sinai gave the Mosaic Law, which in the New Testament is not abolished, but is fulfilled and spiritualized: The Law of the Old Testament served as a "pedagogue unto Christ," showing man his inability to be saved by his own powers alone. In the New Testament, Christ (particularly in the Sermon on the Mount) deepens the Law, shifting the center of gravity from the external observance of rules to the inner purity of the heart. Let us now take a taste of the Revelation from some excerpts of Odysseas Elytis's translation. Prologue (Rev. 1:9) I, John, your brother, who live with you in the affliction and the strength and the endurance in the love of Jesus, was destined to be found on this island which they call Patmos, for the sake of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. One day — it was a Sunday — the spirit seized me and, it seemed to me, I heard behind me a great voice as from a trumpet saying: Write down what you see. Make it a book and send it to the seven churches: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea. His ascent to the throne of God (Rev. 4:2-4) And after all these things were done, I see and there is a door standing wide open in heaven. And the first voice, that one which was speaking to me as from a trumpet, was saying: Come up here and I will show you what is to follow. And immediately the spirit seized me. And behold: set up in heaven a throne and upon the throne He who was sitting, you would see, He shone like a stone of jasper and sardius. And above the throne, a halo with an emerald glow. And around — all around the throne, twenty-four other thrones and upon them twenty-four elders clothed in white and with a golden crown on their head. The seven lamps and the four beasts (Rev. 4:5-7) And behold, lightning and voices and thunders are being shaken from the throne. And before the throne, seven lamps burning ever in flame — which are the seven spirits of God. Before the throne again, something like a glassy sea, like crystal. And in the midst and around the throne, four beasts which you would see to be full of eyes front and back. The first of these resembled a lion, the second an ox, the third had a human face and the fourth was like an eagle flying. Description of the angels, worship of Him (Rev. 4:8-11) Each of them had six wings. But both inside and out, they were full of eyes. And without rest, day and night, they were saying: "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and Who is and Who is to come." And immediately when the beasts offered honor and glory and thanks to Him who sits on the throne and lives forever and ever, at once the twenty-four elders fall down and worship Him who sits on the throne and lives forever and ever. And they cast their crowns before the throne saying: Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power. For You created all things, and all things were created because You willed them. He who was sitting on the throne (Rev. 5:1) I noticed then that He who was sitting on the throne had in His right hand a book full of writings on the inside and on the back — and sealed with seven seals. And I saw at the same moment a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice: "Who is worthy to open this book and to break its seals?" The book of life (Rev. 5:2-6) But no one was found, neither in heaven nor on earth nor under the earth, who could manage to open the book or to look at it. And I began to weep because no one was found worthy, neither to open the book nor to look at it. When one of the elders says to me: "Come, do not weep, look: the lion, He who holds from the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has prevailed. He will open the book and its seven seals." The appearance of the Lamb (Rev. 5:7-8) Then I saw, between the throne and the four living creatures and the elders, a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he came and took the book from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And as soon as he had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. Hymn of all (Rev. 5:9-14) And they sang a new song, saying: "Worthy are you to take the book and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth." And I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand, saying with a loud voice: "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!" And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying: "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and power forever and ever!" And the four living creatures said, "Amen," and the elders fell down and worshiped.
