Whoever remains steadfastly faithful to Christ and preserves her virginity is rescued from death by divine grace and honored as a martyr.
The text tells the legend of Saint Thecla from the first century, who hears the preaching of the Apostle Paul in Iconium and thereupon accepts the Christian faith. She rejects her engagement to Thamyris and wishes to serve Christ as a virgin. Thamyris denounces Paul to the governor, whereupon Thecla is sentenced to death by burning, but is preserved through divine intervention. After her flight she accompanies Paul to Antioch, where the dignitary Alexander desires her and has her put to death once more. God repeatedly rescues her from wild animals, bulls, and seals, and she receives baptism in the water. The narrative emphasizes her steadfastness, divine grace, and the overcoming of persecution. It serves as a model for courageous faith and fidelity to Christ.

Saint Thecla. The all-blessed and all-praised first martyr and equal-to-the-apostles of Christ
Hagiography - Figures

Aristidis Theodoropoulos, Educator
The rich missionary activity of the heaven-ascended Apostle to the Gentiles Paul provided the opportunity for men and women to know the saving message of the Gospel of Christ, who were enchanted by his proclamation of the Cross and Resurrection and subsequently emerged as fiery heralds of Christian teaching. Among the sanctified figures who embraced our Lord Jesus Christ through the teaching of the great herald and evangelist of Christian truth, Apostle Paul, is the honored by our Orthodox Church on September 24 first martyr and equal-to-the-apostles of Christ, Saint Thecla, the “fellow-traveler of Paul, as she purified her soul, and became a first champion among women with honor,” as she is hymned in her apolytikion.
Around the middle of the 1st century AD and during his first apostolic journey, Apostle Paul arrived from Antioch to Iconium in Asia Minor to proclaim the Gospel of Christ. On this journey, he was accompanied by Dimas and Hermogenes, who pretended to be pious, but in reality were distinguished by their cunning and hypocrisy. In Iconium, Paul was hosted together with his two companions in the house of the pious Onesiphorus, who received him in the city with particular respect and love, while through the ironic behavior of his two companions, he immediately perceived their cunning way of thinking. The house of Onesiphorus was quickly transformed into a space for teaching the word of God, and a multitude of people gathered there to hear the proclamation of the divinely-inspired Apostle. However, Thecla, the later glorious first martyr and equal-to-the-apostles of Christ, also originated from Iconium in Asia Minor; she was the daughter of idolaters, specifically of a nobleman whose name remains unknown, and of the Greek Theokleia. Simultaneously, at the age of eighteen, she was betrothed to a young man named Thamyris. Hearing from a window the sweetest and God-inspired words of the blessed Paul, the all-revered Thecla was so enchanted by the greatness of the Christian faith that for three whole days and nights she listened with wonder and joy to the proclamation about Jesus Christ, forgetting even to eat and drink water.
This sudden change in Thecla’s behavior worried her mother, who immediately informed her fiancé, Thamyris, asking him to go at once to the house of Onesiphorus, where Apostle Paul was proclaiming the Gospel of Christ, in order to persuade her to return home. However, Thecla remained steadfast and unshakable in her decision to become the bride of Christ and to preserve her virginity. Indeed, despite the threats of her fiancé, she remained attached to the proclamation of the heaven-ascended Apostle. Then Thamyris was enraged by her persistence and attachment to the teaching of Paul and decided to take revenge on him. As soon as Paul’s two cunning companions, Dimas and Hermogenes, perceived his anger and indignation, they informed him that Paul teaches that whoever preserves their virginity remains immortal. Thus, with this word, women are encouraged to remain virgins and to separate from their husbands. Therefore, the two foolish companions of Paul encouraged Thamyris to slander the God-inspired Apostle to the ruler of the city, so that he would be punished as an example. In this way, Thecla would be afraid and would be forced to return to her fiancé. Thus, the enraged Thamyris broke into the house of Onesiphorus and forcibly led Paul to the ruler, who gave the order to imprison him for a few days until he was tried.
As soon as Thecla was informed of the events, she decided, inflamed by divine love, to bear witness for the love of Christ. Therefore, she went to the prison and, after approaching the jailer, she gave him all her golden ornaments with the promise that he would allow her to visit Paul. The jailer let her in, and then Thecla was catechized by the divinely inspired Apostle in the treasure of the Christian faith, becoming a fervent follower of the word of God. However, when Thamyris began to search for her, he discovered her, following information from a certain slave, inside the prison, and indeed sitting at the feet of the Apostle Paul. The whole spectacle enraged him to such a degree that he decided to gather the mob and go to the governor, demanding exemplary punishment for both Paul and Thecla. Thus, by order of the governor, both were brought before him. Paul was set free, after first being mercilessly flogged, and then was forced to be expelled from Iconium. But for Thecla, the order was given that she be burned in the middle of the theater, so that the other women would be afraid and not abandon their husbands. This punishment was in fact chosen at the urging of her own mother, who was enraged by her daughter’s attachment to Paul. At this critical moment, the virtuous and most holy bride of Christ, Thecla, was mentally strengthened by the presence of the Lord, who, in the form of Paul, sat among the mob that had gathered in the theater. As soon as she was encouraged by this divinely sent presence, she saw the Lord ascending into the heavens. This event made her become certain both of the authenticity of Paul’s teaching and of the unshakable truth contained in the God-inspired words. Thus, armed with admirable courage and inexpressible joy, she walked toward martyrdom for the glory of the name of our Lord. As soon as they set fire and stripped her naked, the governor was overcome by deep sorrow, beholding the inexpressible beauty of the young girl. But Thecla remained unshakable in her faith and prayed unceasingly to the Bridegroom Christ. His presence and miraculous intervention did not take long to appear, since strong thunderclaps and lightning filled the sky, and then the heaviest rainfall, combined with thick hail, extinguished the fire. At the same time, many who had come to the theater to witness the punishment of the “lawless” Thecla found sudden death.
After her salvation through the all-powerful grace of God, she put on her garment and searched for Paul, who, together with Onesiphorus and his family, had taken refuge in an old tomb. There they were hiding without food for three whole days in order to avoid arrest. However, the lack of food forced Paul to sell his coat in order to buy bread with the money. Therefore, he sent a child of Onesiphorus to the market. There, the young child met Thecla in surprise, since he believed that she had been thrown into the fire and no longer lived. After becoming certain of her existence, he led her to Paul’s secret refuge, who had been praying for her salvation all this time. The meeting of Paul with Thecla created an atmosphere of inexpressible spiritual joy, while Thecla asked Paul to cut her hair and to wear male clothing in order to become a faithful and inseparable companion in his apostolic tours. But Paul refused such a proposal, because he believed that due to her beauty she would risk facing temptation, which would be much worse than the first. However, he asked her to be crucified, so that the grace of God would strengthen her, in order to face every difficulty and every temptation.
Meanwhile, Onisiphorus and his family returned to Iconium, while Paul and Thecla departed for Antioch. Upon arriving there, they met the first magistrate of the city, Alexander, who was distinguished for his cunning and immoral life. As soon as he caught sight of Thecla, he was seized by a strong erotic attraction. Therefore, he asked Paul for her as his wife, promising that he would give him in exchange the amount of money he desired. Indeed, Alexander seized her and began to kiss her in the middle of the road before the crowd. The most pious daughter did not lose her courage and composure, and after rejecting his provocative and shameless proposal, she tore off his coat and removed the crown he was wearing from his head. This attitude of Thecla ridiculed Alexander, who, enraged, threatened that if she did not comply with his desire, he would denounce her to the proconsul and ask him to have her executed. However, Thecla remained steadfast and unshakable in her choice to have Jesus Christ as her Bridegroom. This fact resulted in her being accused before the proconsul as a blasphemer, and the order was given that she be thrown to the wild flesh-eating beasts.
However, before the sentence was carried out, Thecla requested that she be handed over to a virtuous woman to keep her pure and undefiled for three days. The proconsul then handed her over to Tryphaena, who had recently lost her daughter, Falconilla. Indeed, she surrounded her with such love and affection that she had her as her own daughter. When the critical moment arrived, Thecla was thrown bound to the wild beasts. Among them was a wild lioness, which, instead of attacking the saint, did not touch her at all. Then the crowd, which was watching this unexplained phenomenon in astonishment, considered Thecla’s condemnation to be unjust, while Tryphaena took Thecla and led her to the house where she was being hosted. Indeed, this virtuous woman saw in her sleep her deceased daughter telling her to have Thecla as her only and beloved child, and she also begged her mother to ask Thecla to pray to the Lord to rest her among the Just, which she did with great eagerness. However, the proconsul came to the house where Thecla was being hosted and demanded from Tryphaena that she send her to be killed. Tryphaena refused to hand over her new daughter, but soldiers were sent and took her by force. Then the virtuous woman, who had shown so much love and compassion to Thecla, began to weep and lament, saying that within a short time she would accompany her second beloved daughter to the grave. Thus, Thecla was led again to the wild beasts, but by the grace of God she remained unharmed again. This fact caused despair and anger, and then it was decided to throw her into a lake with wild seals to tear her apart. However, the saint prayed to the Lord and, entering the water of the lake, received through the grace of the Lord the Holy Baptism, while the intervention of God was decisive, since lightning from the sky fell in the form of fire upon the seals and burned them. The renewed unsuccessful attempt to kill the saint enraged Alexander again, who ordered the proconsul to throw Thecla to two wild bulls, but again the grace of God protected her. Seeing the continuing heinous attempts to kill Thecla, Tryphaena fainted, a fact that terrified Alexander and the proconsul, because Tryphaena was a relative of the Caesar. Indeed, in the case that the Caesar learned of the events, he could punish them. Therefore, the proconsul called Thecla to explain to him the inexplicable things that were happening. Then the saint confessed with frankness her faith in Jesus Christ, who is the only true God who protects whoever believes in Him and confesses Him. As soon as the proconsul heard this, he ordered that she be set free.
Then Thecla departed for Myra in Lycia, because she had been informed that the Apostle Paul was there. During their meeting, the heaven-dwelling Apostle told her that he had left her alone for her own spiritual benefit, since she needed to learn to rely exclusively on the Lord and His power, and not on his companionship and help. Indeed, the saint herself acknowledged this spiritual benefit, who, through the Lord, endured so many tortures, but also preserved the purity of her soul and body. Then Paul encouraged her to return to her homeland, Iconium in Asia Minor, which she did. Upon arriving there, she visited Onesiphorus at his house, as well as the tomb outside the city, where Paul and Onesiphorus had previously taken refuge. At the same time, she prayed that the Lord would guide her in the path she was to follow. Meanwhile, she was informed of the death of her former suitor, Thamyris, while her attempt to teach the word of God to her idolatrous mother, Theoclea, proved barren and ineffective.
Then, by the indication of the Lord, she headed from Iconium to Seleucia, which is located on the Orontes River, and from there she ascended to Mount Kalaman, which is located in the city of Maaloula in Syria. On this mountain, she discovered a cave, in which she resided for many years, facing various demonic temptations, which she overcame by the all-powerful grace of the Lord. Her luminous ascetic presence in the cave began, meanwhile, to attract more and more women who visited her to benefit spiritually. Indeed, many of them followed her in the virtue of asceticism and abandoned the worldly way of life and thought. But also many people who suffered from mental and physical illnesses were healed by the power of her prayer to our Lord Jesus Christ. However, the doctors of the region, learning that the saint Thecla had become a prominent unpaid doctor who heals for free the patients rushing to her, felt such great envy that they began to slander her, claiming that she is a priestess of the goddess Artemis and with her help performs miracles and maintains her virginity. Therefore, they decided to send lewd young men to defile her bodily. But the saint Thecla did not lose her courage and faced them with composure, invoking the help of God. After praying to the Lord, asking Him to preserve her virginity, a divine voice was heard telling her that the rock in front of her would split for her and that she would dwell eternally inside it. As soon as these divinely inspired words were heard, a large rock split, and after the saint passed through, the rock closed again. The lewd young men who tried to defile her were left dumbfounded by this supernatural event, and the only thing they managed to do was snatch the tunic she was wearing on her shoulders. Thus, the first martyr and co-apostle of Christ, the saint Thecla, at the age of 90 years, received the unfading crown of sanctity, in order to rejoice together with the other martyrs of the faith beside the Bridegroom Christ.
In the cave where she practiced asceticism, according to the testimony of the Patriarch of Antioch, Macarius III, her tomb is also located, while on the eastern side of the cave there is a spring with a holy well. In this blessed place, the Orthodox Monastery of Saint Thecla (Mar Taqla) was founded in the 4th century AD, which belongs to the Patriarchate of Antioch and is one of the oldest monasteries in Syria. Next to the monastery and between the huge rocks there is a gorge, which is the rock that split open to hide the saint. This historic monastery was destroyed and completely looted by the fanatical Islamic rebels in December 2013, but after the renovation of the monastery and the restoration of the damages, it was re-consecrated on August 12, 2018. A renowned holy monastery dedicated to the name of the first-martyr and equal-to-the-apostles Saint Thecla is located in the village of Mosfiloti in the district of Larnaca in Cyprus, which was founded in the early 4th century AD by Saint Helena, according to the local oral tradition recorded in 1815 by the English traveler William Turner. When Saint Helena arrived in this area of Cyprus, she offered a prayer to God, whereupon a holy well began to flow from the ground, which exists to this day and is used for the treatment of skin diseases. Above the spot where the holy well flowed, she subsequently built a church dedicated to Saint Thecla.
The name of the saint is borne by a settlement in the municipality of Chalkida–Aliveri in Euboea, which is adorned with a same-named Byzantine cross-in-square church dating from the 13th–14th century and featuring notable frescoes, as well as a village in the district of Paliki in western Kefalonia, where in the same-named parish church the icon of the Saint is kept, which was brought from Byzantium by the Loberd family, who were also the first inhabitants of the village. A parish church in the name of the Saint also exists in Milochori in the district of Eordaia in the regional unit of Kozani, which began to be built in 1957 and was completed in 1960, while the veneration of the Saint is widespread in the Cyclades with same-named churches (chapels – open-air chapels) on Andros, Tinos, Serifos, and Amorgos. Notable is the holy church of Saint Thecla in Pyrgos on Tinos, which is the property of the well-known artistic family of the Philippotides. In the place of the first open-air chapel, a new holy church was built with the initiative and care of the late Metropolitan of Mesogaea and Lavreotiki, Agathonikos Philippotis († September 1, 2015), which was inaugurated in 1977, while in the forecourt two additional chapels, as well as a Church Museum, were built. The entire complex constitutes a public-benefit foundation under the name “AGATHONIKOS PHILIPPOTIS FOUNDATION OF SAINT THECLA OF PYRGOS, TINOS”, which was established in 1994 by a relevant Presidential Decree (Government Gazette 749, series 2/5-10-94). In the northeastern Aegean, Saint Thecla is honored with same-named churches on Lesbos, specifically in the Pyrgos of Thermi and in the village of Kayani (Taxiarches), while in northern Euboea and specifically in the area of Saint Anna there are two open-air chapels dedicated to the equal-to-the-apostles and first-martyr of Christ, located on the beach of Saint Anna and at the site of Paleovrysi.
Of particular historical and artistic value are the two churches of the Saint located in Attica, which ecclesiastically belong to the Holy Metropolis of Mesogaea and Lavreotiki. One church is located at the Cross of Saint Paraskevi on Mesogeion Avenue and is particularly popular among the residents of the area. The original building dates to the late 12th and early 13th centuries, while the present church, a single-aisle wooden-roofed basilica, was built in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. It was a metochion (dependent monastery) of the historic Holy Monastery of Saint John the Hunter, located on the western side of Mount Hymettus, a fact confirmed by the surviving column of the monk Neophytus, successor of the monk Luke, abbot of the Monastery, which bears an inscribed epitaph and the date 1238. The other church, a domed basilica with a double-pitched roof, is located in Markopoulo of Mesogaea, in the center of the town and southwest of the Holy Church of Saint John, next to the chapel of Saint Paraskevi. It was built between the years 1730 and 1750 and is adorned with frescoes of exceptional Byzantine art, executed by a student of the distinguished Argian icon painters Georgios and Antonios Markos. The work of the elaborate iconography of this historic church was completed in 1767. A church under the name of the Saint also existed in the center of Athens, in the Monastiraki area, at the intersection of today’s Ermou Street and Agias Theklas Street, which suffered severe damage from the Turks and was demolished in 1848. Among the relics of the church is the preserved portable icon of Saint Thekla (Agathokleia), which has since been kept in the Holy Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos Pantanassa, located in Monastiraki Square.
The first martyr and equal-to-the-apostles Saint Thekla, honored by our Orthodox Church on September 24, who is hymned and glorified both through the Service and the Supplicatory Canon composed by the late Hymnographer of the Great Church of Christ, Gerassimos the Monk from Mikranian, and through the Hail Odes composed by the Great Hymnographer of the Church of Alexandria, Dr. Charalambos M. Bousias, stands out in our present chaotic era as a shining example of unshakable faith with a combative and missionary spirit. Simultaneously, she is highlighted as an unparalleled symbol of spiritual and physical purity, since she chose in her earthly journey as her sole and inseparable companion and supporter the leader of our faith, our Lord Jesus Christ.
