The Spring of the Mumin

DITIB Religionsamt · DITIB · 2026-09-25 · Köln · Source

Gratitude · carrying Community · carrying Repentance

Winter offers the believer a special opportunity, through short days and long nights, to renew spiritually and draw closer to God through fasting, prayer, and reflection.

Winter is the spring of the mumin: his days are short, so that he fasts, and his nights are long, so that he rises for prayer.

The sermon calls on Muslims to understand the approaching autumn and winter as a spiritual opportunity. It refers to a Quranic verse that describes creation as a sign of God, and to a hadith that calls winter the "spring of the mumin." Accordingly, the short days are suited for voluntary fasting, and the long nights for prayer, Quran recitation, and supplication. The text compares the inner renewal of the believer to the spring of nature. It encourages transforming the cold season into a time of mercy and inner warmth. It calls for spending more time with family and reading the Quran together with children. The sermon concludes with a supplication of the Prophet, asking for help in remembrance, gratitude, and service to Allah.

Dear Muslims! Our exalted Lord has endowed the entire universe with countless signs and wisdoms, making them occasions for reflection for us. In the Noble Quran, He points to some of these and says: “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, are signs for those who possess intellect.” 1 This Quranic verse calls upon us not only to observe nature but also to reflect on what we see, to recognize the divine wisdom behind it, and to turn towards our Lord through this contemplation. The difference between day and night is also one of the natural phenomena about which we should reflect. Beloved Believers! We are in the days when autumn begins and day and night are of equal length. In the coming weeks, with the approach of winter, the nights will become longer and the days shorter. Many of us associate the approaching winter with cold, shorter daylight, and the need to withdraw. However, our beloved Prophet (s.) taught us to view this season from a completely different perspective. He said: “Winter is the spring of the Believer: His days are short, so he fasts, and his nights are long, so he rises for prayer.” 2 Just as nature awakens to new life in spring, trees bloom, and the earth renews itself, the Believer also finds an opportunity for spiritual renewal and inner blossoming in winter, with its long nights and short days. On the short days, the Believer fasts, while in the long nights, he takes more time for prayer, the remembrance of Allah, contemplation, Quran recitation, supplication, and asking for forgiveness. In this way, he makes winter an opportunity to draw closer to Allah. In another Hadith, our Prophet (s.) drew attention to the ease that winter offers for fasting, saying: “The easy prey is fasting in winter.” 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters! Let us transform the approaching season and the colder days into a time of mercy, in which we find inner warmth. Let us adorn the long nights with prayer, Quran recitation, and supplications, and the short days with voluntary fasting and good deeds. Let us spend more time with our families. Let us read the Quran together with our children and have good conversations with them. Let us not forget that every season is an opportunity for the Believer to draw closer to his Lord. I would like to conclude my sermon with the beautiful supplication of our beloved Prophet (s.), which is meant to help us serve Allah even better, especially in such a time: “O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to serve You in the best manner!” 4 Ameen. Verehrte Muslime!
