True love for God and for all humanity is manifested in obedience to divine commandments, particularly through the fast of the Virgin Mary and active works of mercy toward those in need.
Therefore, in this fast of the Virgin Mary, we should complete the fast by feeding the fasting, clothing the unclothed, covering the naked, visiting the sick and the imprisoned, receiving the holy sacrifice, and praying the prayer of repentance for our sins.
The text is a papal message from the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church that inaugurates the 22-day fast of the Virgin Mary (beginning on 1 Nehase). He grounds the practice theologically in love for God, which is manifested in keeping the commandments, and in the particular honor of Mary as Mother of God. The Patriarch defines the concept of the neighbor as all of humanity, including the deceased, and emphasizes the temporal and spatial boundlessness of Christian love. As concrete expressions of the fast, almsgiving, care for those in need, and prayers of repentance are mentioned. The text closes with a prayer for peace in Ethiopia and in the world in light of the war there. He calls on the faithful to strengthen their connection to God and to one another through abstinence and works of mercy.
