The spiritual life consists in penetrating one's own expectations, passions, and false images of God through self-observation, humility, and cross-bearing, in order to encounter God and the neighbour in inner freedom.
The spiritual life in the Orthodox Church is a way of life, outside the space-time framework of the present world.
The text brings together several short contributions from the area of Eastern Orthodox spiritual life. It deals with the duality of the human being as body and soul, the expectations in everyday life, the significance of the cross, inner freedom with regard to the judgement of others, the image of God, the purity of body and soul, the limits of self-knowledge, people-pleasing, anger, the attribution of blame to God, and the virtues of self-observation, vigilance, and discernment. The contributions draw on the theophoric Fathers and on the Gerontikon. They combine ascetic teaching with concrete references to everyday life, such as relationships, upbringing, and inner restlessness. The text is addressed to people who seek a spiritual life in the Orthodox Church. It emphasises that the spiritual life is a way of life that points beyond the present space-time framework. The central message is that inner freedom, humility, and the knowledge of God grow through practice, self-examination, and letting go of one's own expectations.

The Cares of Life
Man, according to the God-bearing Fathers, is a mixture of material and spiritual. He has a material substance, because he has a body, but at the same time he also has a spiritual substance, because he has an immortal soul. With this reasoning, Saint Symeon the New Theologian, a great hesychast father of the East, notes: "This is man, a mortal and immortal being, a spectator of the visible creation […]

Expectations of the Cross
People in our life have expectations. We want to achieve goals, we hope that our loved ones will support us, that some will be found who will share our thoughts and visions, that we are entitled to succeed and that circumstances will come about so that whatever we expect will be realized. Our expectations help us not to be broken in difficulties, […]

Access – The Cross of Christ in Our Life
The spiritual in the Orthodox Church is a way of life, outside the space-time of the present world. While it exists within the world, it lives and acts in the last things, in the new world of the promise and the revelation. In the program Access, hieromonk Fr. Gennadios Manolis converses with guests from the field of the Church and society, seeking the antibodies […]

To Live Without Explanations?
In an era in which Social Media Networks create a climate of demands for people to explain what they do and why they do it, especially when they are public figures, the slogan has fallen: "Live without explanations." The old ones used to say "to live without caring what the world will say." This was considered a sign of a free soul, […]

The Weakness of God
Our childhood conceptions of God, identical with the religious ones, present us with a strong God, demanding and harsh, spying on our life and punishing our disobediences that oppose His will. Conceptions that torment, that create fears and guilt, so that it would be preferable "for God not to exist." Of course, those who reject such a God […]

Purity of Body and Soul
Purity, according to the God-bearing Fathers, is the liberation of man from the passions. It agrees with the dual nature of the human person, with the fact that man is flesh and soul. Thus, according to Abba Isaac the Syrian, "purity of the body is holiness from the defilement of the flesh, but purity of the […]

Do Not Think
Do not think that you can easily understand your intentions, interpret your behaviors, and analyze yourself. Because "the soul of man is an abyss" according to the popular expression. And the prophet David writes about the "deep heart" (Psalm 63), that is, about the unfathomable thoughts of man. Therefore, you cannot be absolute in your judgments […]

People-Pleasing
Ammas Sarah said: "It is good for the eyes of men that someone does almsgiving. For even from humanity it leads to the pleasing of God" (from the "Gerontikon"). We humans have in our soul a desire that becomes the criterion of the actions of our life: "to please." Thus, we do things to be approved. We are pleased to […]

Anger
Abba Isaiah was asked what anger is, and he answered: "Contentiousness and falsehood and lack of knowledge of God" (from the "Gerontikon"). In human relationships, anger easily appears. It is not simply a rage because things do not go as we want them to. It is a psychological tension in which the other person is considered not only unacceptable, but our enemy. We burden him [...]

God is to blame for everything!
I thought that the difficult people around me were to blame for my inner turmoil. I assumed that the trials that come unexpectedly are the reason I have no joy. Three virtues for parents and children
Abba Poimen said: "To watch oneself and to be careful, and discernment – these three virtues are guides of the soul" (from the "Gerontikon"). The relationship between parents and children has to do not only with the love and care that parents are called to show toward their children, but [...]
