Gratitude is not a passive feeling but an active, practiced duty that acknowledges divine action and finds expression in visible deeds toward God and fellow human beings.
Offer to God. Gratitude. Sacrifice is quite interesting, that the term sacrifice is used for showing gratitude. And that is because the Hebrew word for it is used, which also designates a kind of sacrifice.
The sermon addresses the Hebrew etymology of the word for thanksgiving (Toda) and its connection to sacrifice. The preacher defines gratitude as an active reaction to received good and emphasizes that human beings are by nature selfish and ungrateful. Using Psalm 103 as an example, divine grace and mercy are presented as the foundation for this gratitude. Three practical 'vitamins' are introduced: acknowledging the good of God, actively remembering rather than forgetting, and making gratitude visible. The sermon refers to the biblical call to offer thanks to God, which is regarded as a higher form of worship than material sacrifices. It is pointed out that gratitude also opens doors and strengthens interpersonal relationships. The text concludes with the appeal to practice gratitude as a lived attitude in the congregation and in everyday life.

Offer to God. Gratitude. Sacrifice is quite interesting, that the term sacrifice is used to express gratitude. And this is because the Hebrew word for it is also used to designate a type of sacrifice. In Hebrew, it is death. Can you perhaps repeat the word? Toda, now you know a Hebrew word, Toda. And there it means gratitude. Gratitude can be expressed through sacrifice, can be expressed through songs, through prayers, through service. But I love concepts and I am, thank God, traveling in various languages, and then I always look at how I designate such a term in the respective language in which I preach. In German, we have "Gott sei Dank" (Thank God). Gratitude or being grateful. What does that mean? I try to formulate it more simply. I must admit, to formulate it simply is not easy. There are some words that have more letters than the alphabet alone. For gratitude, I wrote the following: it is a feeling that causes a person to appreciate the benefit or favor that another person has done or intended to do for him, and to reward him in some way for it. Therefore, someone who feels gratitude does not remain passive toward someone who has done good for him. He always reacts. Whoever is grateful reacts toward the one who has done good; the grateful person always reacts positively toward the one who has done him good. And it was quite interesting to me that the definition also included intending to do good. Perhaps he did not do it, but he realized that he wanted to do me good. Now, we must admit that man by nature is not grateful at all. I work as a professional employee in a kindergarten, and you always have to remind the children, what do you say to that? What is the magic word? Or sometimes we get a little ahead of ourselves and say "you're welcome" and expect them to thank us. Sometimes they simply turn around, and perhaps we get muscle soreness if we maintain the same position, and that shows us simply to do that, and then afterwards they grow up, they are in this wonderful, very special, blessed teenage age where one thinks they have actually learned to be grateful. But that is not always the case. It lies in our nature. Man by nature is selfish. Therefore, we must learn. We must simply be like David. We are now reading together in Psalm 103. Yes. Psalm 103 verses 1 to 14. Praise the Lord, my soul, and all that is within me, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquities, and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies your desires with good things, so that your youth is renewed like that of an eagle. The Lord executes righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. He made his ways known to Moses, to the children of Israel his acts. Merciful and gracious is the Lord, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not keep his anger forever, nor be angry for ever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion on his children, so the Lord shows compassion on those who fear him. For he knows what we are; he remembers that we are dust. David spoke poetically with his own self, with his I. Praise the Lord, my soul. And in his psalms, he gives us a few important hints that we must learn, that we should practice, if we want to be on our way as grateful people. First of all, grateful toward God, but also grateful toward our fellow human beings.
I call them vitamins. When I teach or preach. I always pass on vitamins, and you know how it is with vitamins. So that it works and functions. What moves, one must swallow it. Therefore, I am now passing on three vitamins to you, so that you should practice with them and live a life before gratitude. First, acknowledge what good God has done for us. Some people take it for granted that God holds everything and does everything and protects us and does what we sometimes do not even pray about. He is there for that. So, right? Now, we can also come to the same thought that He, as God, is also a judge. He has the right and also to repay according to what we have done or not done, then when we are in a bad mood or? Therefore David said, He has not dealt with us according to our sins and has not rewarded us according to our iniquities. So good He is. But first, we must acknowledge that. And sometimes it is so that we do not have that in view. We have little idea of what good He does for us. Therefore, we must consciously go into it, and we notice that our prayer times are more characterized by asking than by thanksgiving. I once did such a test, unwillingly. I believe God led me to that, and I thought, okay, now we have a prayer time only to thank God. After that comes the asking time. Now only to give thanks, and the following happened. He started. Father, we thank you. You are so good. You have forgiven my sin and I ask you that you and then came the second one, Lord, you are so good, you have spoken to us, you have found us and therefore I pray to you that you and that God to grasp, no one held out, only to thank. So is our human nature, and please do not misunderstand me. He said, pray and I and I will give you. Now, gratitude must be learned and practiced, trained. Therefore, vitamin one is to acknowledge what God has done for you. And if you do not know that yet, there is a wonderful book called the Bible, and there is much in it, what good, what good God has done for you. How can one then, how can one keep this principle in view? Yes, by holding the following principle. And here comes the second vitamin: remember instead of forgetting, remind ourselves instead of forgetting. Is it not true that forgetting is much easier than remembering? Forgetting happens automatically. To remember, one must consciously go into it. What was it again? In fact, we humans tend to more easily forget what good has been done to us and very quickly think about what bad has been done to us. Do you know that? In some relationships, for years it runs super wonderfully, best friend ever, and everything is super, and then comes such a moment of a misunderstanding, there was a discussion, we could not understand each other, we have gone separate ways, and from that point on, we only think about that argument and automatically forget all the good that the years before have done for us. So are we humans, therefore we must train ourselves. So David said in a poetic form to his soul: "Do not forget, my soul, what He has done for you. Remember it, and then make a list. He has done that and that and that and that and that, and that and that not done. That one could do. We must train ourselves to remember. But what can we do? How can we practice that, remind ourselves? And here comes vitamin number 3, which is a very important principle, that we should not let go, when we should or want to be grateful. Show that you are grateful. Show it. Bring to light that you are grateful. Is it not so in our upbringing, when we give our children some task and they do not do it, then we are a bit angry,
But they know exactly that when they want something, suddenly they are very nice and thank you for everything. Thank you that I am allowed to live here. Thank you that you made breakfast. And what happens with our grumbling? Then it simply melts away, and then we forget everything he has not done. So clever are the children, and as clever as you were before, someone said gratitude opens doors. Gratitude is like a key to open the door. We also read from Psalm 50 verse 14: "Offer to God your thanksgiving." And I spoke a little about sacrifices. What is a sacrifice? Something that I should give. So, and being grateful, it is about giving, not about taking. And there we have a little problem. We are very happy to take, but rarely give. A child asks his father: "Dad, can I have 50 euros?" Yes. And the dad says, have, have what I with give? He said, okay Dad, can you give me 50 euros? That is how we humans are. Whoever is grateful practices showing gratitude. Therefore, sacrifice. And here is also a wordplay that the psalmist makes, inspired by the Spirit of God, when he says, offer me your gratitude. And the Z to clarify. I do not need animals, I do not eat meat, I do not drink blood. If I were hungry, I would not have asked you about it at all. Everything belongs to me. And then comes this wordplay: Offer me your gratitude. Why is gratitude much more important to God than all these sacrifices, which, by the way, He Himself established? That was not Moses' idea. There were God's instructions. Why is our gratitude much more important to God? Because when we show gratitude, we recognize that He is God and that He does good for us. When we show gratitude, we prove that we consciously remember that it was He who did us good. And when we show gratitude, we have made a decision to prove to Him, I am grateful. And when we are grateful, there are such wonderful responses of God for those who practice gratitude. It is so powerful. We also read in Psalm 14. Offer me your gratitude and then call upon me when you are in distress and then I will answer. There is also a wonderful response in Psalm 50, verses 22 and 23. See to it, you who forget God, so that I do not, so that I do not go away and no one speaks. Whoever offers a sacrifice, that one honors me. When we thank God, we honor Him, He promises. And to whoever aligns with His ways, I will show the salvation of God. Hallelujah. So powerful is gratitude, and not only towards God, but also towards ourselves, our fellow human beings. Do you know that in traffic jams? Everyone wants to get in and you want to get in. Actually, you should not, but the one who is there looks at you a bit askance, but you say okay and then you drive in. Do you or do you lie? Yes, if you are such a person in the next traffic jam, because you have shown gratitude, you do not want to let it happen again, if we set our standard. I am in the next traffic jam, if he meets you, he says now you have to wait, because gratitude honors the one who receives it. We show, we prove. I acknowledge that you have done me good today and not only today, but especially today is a good day to be grateful. Perhaps there is also someone in your family circle. Perhaps there is someone in the congregation to whom you can show gratitude. Here is a wonderful pillar, there you can also thank God. I have a few pieces of advice at the end. I find it very, very divine that you are also in a sermon series on the Epistle to the Colossians. I had no idea of that. And with the Epistle to the Colossians I want to end. Colossians 3 from verse 15. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts. To this you have also been called in one body, and be thankful. There the Apostle Paul has to emphasize again. Be thankful. And here also comes the term offer gratitude.
Sometimes we are in a difficult situation. It is not easy to give thanks. In this, these words offer gratitude. Be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell richly in you, in all wisdom. Teach and admonish one another, and with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, sing to the Lord melodiously in your hearts. And whatever you do, in word or deed, what we say or how we act, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, and give thanks to God the Father through Him. I wish you a week full of gratitude. Kom. Opfere Gott. Dankbarkeit. Was bedeutet das? Liegt an unsere Natur. Was bewegt, muss man es runterschlucken. Erstens anerkennen, was Gott uns Gutes getan hat. Also, ne? Du bist so gut. Ja, indem man folgenden Grundsatz hält. Da dringt an diesen Worte opfere Dankbarkeit. Sei dankbar.
