Gratitude · main message Community · carrying Humility

Human life consists of the sum of all encounters, which are to be accepted as fateful gifts and met with gratitude in order to develop an open heart.

How good it is that I met you.

The text reflects on the significance of human encounters and their fateful interconnectedness (En). The speaker argues that life consists of the sum of all contacts, including those that are perceived as uncomfortable or contradictory. He refers to Buddhist concepts such as entanglement over many lifetimes in order to foster the acceptance of all people. Encounters with others are presented as a means of self-knowledge and personal development. The Buddha is named as an inner reference point for developing an open heart toward uncomfortable situations. At the end, he calls on the audience to feel gratitude at the memorial service for the deceased and to renew their resolve to lead a life that does not weep.

It was good that I met you. The sunlight in the garden, President Tatsuaki Takashige, following fate straightforwardly, a slightly tipsy life, the moon of the wife and the palace, the dwelling of the peak, the intoxication of the day of the back, welcoming the weeping wife, gazing together at the moon—how sorrowfully beautiful it is, one might think. It feels as if one is speaking to the companion who departed first, saying, “I am living a life that does not shame you. Please rest in peace.” This is what I feel. Even if we are not bound by a fate as deep as that of the wind, none of us lives entirely alone. As the word “human” implies, we live among people, and we weave our lives through the accumulation of encounters with people and things. As the Sea Ancestor states precisely, life is encounter. However, among these encounters, there are also encounters in which one suffers from harboring resentment or hatred toward the other. Even if it is not to that extent, since each person has different life experiences and values, there are inevitably encounters with people with whom one does not get along. In such times, for example, if one thinks, “I do not get along with this person,” one may be tempted to distance oneself from that person. However, for some reason, up until now, I have often felt that there are interesting people who possess things I do not have, or I have accepted that there are also such ways of thinking. As the saying goes, “Even if sleeves brush against each other, there is a slight, slight circle,” and as there is also the Buddhist phrase “500 lifetimes of facing and sitting together,” even a person one happens to meet on the road is considered to be bound by a deep karmic connection from a past life. Therefore, it feels wasteful to judge an encounter as good or bad solely according to one’s own convenience or emotions. The poet Harutaro Tanikawa says that thanks to meeting people, he was able to meet himself. Through encounters with people, one becomes aware of aspects of oneself that one would not otherwise notice, or by learning the thoughts of people who oppose one’s own opinions, that may become a question that polishes oneself. It is said that in raising one’s character and humanity, it is important to have an equal number of people who agree with and oppose one’s opinions. In that sense as well, I believe that following fate and facing people straightforwardly enriches life. Although it is said to “re-encounter the weeping person,” it is not easy to straightforwardly accept unpleasant things or people one dislikes. Nevertheless, fortunately, thanks to the Buddha, we can face people and things relatively straightforwardly. This time, when confronted with people or phenomena that are inconvenient for oneself, I reflect inwardly on what the Buddha is trying to teach me, and I calmly observe why I perceive it as inconvenient and what is important to do now. This habit of overlaying one’s own heart upon the Buddha leads to a straightforward heart. Moreover, upon careful reflection, especially encounters with people are the result of a wondrous coincidence arising from a continuous chain of various causes. If one looks up “fate” in a dictionary, it is defined as a mysterious force beyond human power that binds people together, so one can only say that one meets anyone destined to be met. Thinking of this, I want us to be able to sincerely say, “It was good that I met you,” to all the people we have encountered, including spouses, parents and children, and siblings. And I believe that everyone facing each other harmoniously and with smiles is a way of living in accordance with the principle of the performance that teaches that everything is interconnected. As we soon approach the time of the back book, we will re-encounter even those who are currently weeping family members. Recalling the prince, we will deepen our sense of gratitude, thinking, “I am truly glad I met you.” On the other hand, when savoring the preciousness of having life now, words of vows such as the three vows of the Buddhist district or the vow of non-violence press upon the heart more than ever, and one’s resolve to live a life that does not cause others to weep will be renewed. With this, I conclude the labor of the President’s Dharma for the July issue of Reiwa 8, High Life.
