The relationship with God is not a static possession but a dynamic path that remains alive and grows through constant vigilance, conversion, and the following of Christ's humble self-giving.

Our relationship with the Lord is a path, a dynamic path, that takes shape in our lives, grows or shrinks, deepens or dies, depending on our attitude in every phase of our existence.

The homily interprets the readings of the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A) with the central theme of the dynamic and growing relationship with God. The speaker emphasizes that faith is not a static possession but a path that can die through negligence or begin anew through conversion. Using the example of the prophet Ezekiel, it is explained that both the righteous person who falls away and the wicked person who converts bear the consequences of their actions. The parable of the two sons in the Gospel of Matthew is used to clarify the difference between mere promise and lived obedience. As a guide, the Christ hymn from the Letter to the Philippians is offered, which calls for the following of Christ through humility, self-emptying, and obedience unto the cross. The community is encouraged to share the 'feelings of Christ' and to grow in unity and love, so as to attain eternal life.

Ez 18:25-28 Ps 24 Phil 2:1-11 Mt 21:28-32 The Word of God of this Sunday reminds us that our relationship with the Lord is not something static, frozen, acquired once and for all. No one can say that they possess a permanent friendship with the Lord, a friendship that is guaranteed forever and could never be lost. No! It is not so! Our relationship with the Lord is a path, a dynamic path, that takes shape in our life, growing or diminishing, deepening or dying, according to our attitude in each phase of our existence. The Lord is always faithful, he never changes; as for us, we must take care to keep always growing, from faith to faith, from hope to hope, from love to love, in our relationship with the Lord. This is what the readings of Ezekiel and of the Gospel suggest to us. The prophet Ezekiel, in the name of God, warns: "When the righteous turns away from righteousness, commits evil and dies, it is because of the evil he committed that he dies!" Here is a tragic example: the friend of God who dies to life with God! And why? Because he was careless and kept killing the relationship with the Lord, to the point of killing God in his heart and dying to the relationship with God! No one can say: "I have already done so much, I have already given so much to the Lord, I have already renounced so much. Now that is enough! I am going to park!" That would be to regress, to wither on the path of the Lord, to die to life with God! But the opposite is also true. Let us listen: "When the wicked turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life. By turning away from all his sins, he shall surely live; he shall not die!" Here is the goodness of the Lord, who does not hold us captive in our sinful past: Lord of life, your love makes us start over always! There are no excuses for not changing our life, for not starting over, for not leaving our quagmire of sin, of the vice of spiritual laziness! The Lord always waits for us today, in the here and the now; even though many times we no longer believe in ourselves, he continues to believe in us, he always gives us the chance to experience his forgiveness and his mercy! What the Lord spoke through the mouth of Ezekiel, Jesus confirms in the parable of the Gospel of this day. Who are the two sons? The first, who did not want to obey the father, but later repented, are the sinners who, repentant and humbled, welcomed Jesus and the Kingdom he came to announce with all their heart; the second son, who promised to do the will of the father and, later, did as he pleased and understood, are those scribes and Pharisees, righteous in their own eyes, capricious and self-sufficient, who ended up losing the Kingdom of God by refusing to welcome Jesus and his word. Here, most beloved: what are we being before God? Are we being generous toward him? Have we welcomed his will in our life? Have we been attentive to his appeals? We should always progress on the path of the Lord… We progress when we love him, when we do his will, when we dedicate ourselves to him; we progress when we grow in virtue, we progress when we are faithful to our commitments toward him… But, among us, there are those who regress, who grow weak, who grow cold and move away… those who think they can be Christians in an attitude of bourgeois complacency… What are we to do so as not to stop? What are we to do to grow on the path of the Lord? Saint Paul indicates to us a path of great beauty, simplicity, and efficacy, a path indispensable to all of us! Do you wish to grow on the road of God? Do you wish to experience his love? Do you wish to truly live? Then, "have in you the same sentiments of Christ Jesus!" What counsel! To contemplate Jesus, to learn from him, from his heart, his sentiments of total love and total self-giving in relation to the Father and to us; to learn his sweetness, his humility, his radical obedience to the Father: "He, existing in the condition of divinity, emptied himself, assuming the condition of slave, becoming equal to men, making himself obedient unto death, and death of a cross." Beloved, in Christ, do we have the habit of thinking of Jesus, of contemplating this his attitude? Let us look at the cross, let us learn the lesson of the Lord! Christ never sought himself, but emptied himself totally, desiring only the will of the Father. For this reason he was free, for this reason he was the most perfect and complete manifestation of the Kingdom of God, for this reason the Father exalted him, glorified him, filled him with full life! Well, the Apostle invites us to contemplate Jesus, to listen to Jesus, in order to acquire the sentiments of Jesus and, thus, to live the life of Jesus. To live in this way is to be a friend of God, is to truly live and to become a sign of divine life for others. This is what Christians ought to be; this is what the Church must be! Think of the enchanting picture that Saint Paul draws: "If there is any consolation in the life in Christ, if there is any encouragement in mutual love, if there is any communion in the Spirit, if there is any tenderness and compassion… aspire to the same thing, united in the same love; live in harmony, seeking unity. Do nothing from competition or vainglory, but, with humility, and let each one not care only for what is his own, but also for what is the other's!" Here, beloved, is what it is to have the sentiments of Christ; here is what it is to live for God; here is what it is to be already now, a witness of that true life that the Lord will give us for all eternity! Let us grow on this path, let us progress in this life, so that we may truly live. As the opening prayer of this Holy Mass asks: "O God, pour out upon us your grace, so that, walking toward your promises, we may attain the goods that you reserve for us!" Amen. Deveríamos sempre progredir no caminho do Senhor… Olhemos a cruz, aprendamos a lição do Senhor!
