God has a supernatural calling for every person, which is to be fulfilled through trust in his unchanging power and through active action in the Gospel.
The speaker Matteo Wendland tells the story of the Polo brothers and Kublai Khan to illustrate a missed opportunity for evangelization in the 13th century. He contrasts this historical obstacle with today's technological ease of spreading the Gospel worldwide. As an example of his ministry 'Lands for Jesus,' he describes his work in Suriname, where he preaches in the jungle and experiences healings. Wendland emphasizes that Jesus today in Germany possesses the same power as in Suriname and encourages the listeners to recognize their personal calling. He argues that God has no small dreams and that people were created for more than merely to exist. The text closes with an appeal to trust God and to find one's own role in his plan, rather than limiting oneself.

Good morning, everyone. My name is Matteo Wendland. I have the joy of speaking here this morning. Tobi briefly introduced me. As he briefly stated, I actually grew up in this congregation. I was signed in here as a baptismal candidate when I was a small baby and spent many, many wonderful years here in the FCG. Until I was sent out twelve years ago. And since then, I have experienced many adventures for the Lord, all over the world. But before I tell you a little more about myself or about what we do, I want to briefly tell you about a namesake of mine. His name was Matteo Polo. He was the uncle of the famous adventurer Marco Polo. Matteo Polo, together with his brother Nicolo, was on the Silk Road in the year 1266, so that was quite a while ago. They were on their way to trade with Kublai Khan. He was, as it were, the king of the largest known empire, namely the Mongol Empire, which at that time extended from Turkey to the farthest ends in the east of Asia. And what they had heard while setting out on their journey was that this Kublai Khan, this king, was totally fascinated by the person of Jesus Christ. And when they arrived, they became eyewitnesses to the fact that Kublai Khan possessed four Gospels. And they had a very special place in his palace, and almost daily he would go to these Gospels, and he would bow down, and he would kiss each and every one of these Gospels. As a sign of his reverence, and all his officers who were with him also bowed down and kissed these Gospels. And when Marco, when Nicolo Polo and Matteo Polo came there, he immediately recognized that they were Christians. And he said, you know, I find this Jesus so fascinating and I wish I could learn more about him. I have a plan and I want to do the following. I will write a letter to the Pope in Rome, and I want you to deliver this letter to him, and in this letter I will write the following. Probably starting in some way with "Dear Pope" or however he is addressed. I wish that you would send 100 of your best scholars from the entire land to instruct me and my followers in the teaching of Jesus Christ. And if you convince me that Jesus Christ is truly the one of whom I read in the Gospels, then I will confess to the faith in Jesus. And all my officers with me and all who live throughout the Mongol Empire will accept the faith in Jesus Christ. And if every single person in my empire has confessed to Jesus, then more Christians will live in this part of the earth than in all of Europe. With that, he ended the letter. And the two Polo brothers took this letter to the Pope. Months later, probably more than a year, they arrived and presented this letter to the Pope. And the Pope opened the letter and he read it, and he was furious. He screamed and raged and said, these barbarians are not worthy of hearing our precious Gospel. And he tore the letter apart and he did not send a single one there. Not one. And it took 30 years until there were two brave monks who set out on the arduous journey to Kublai Khan. But after many arduous months, they were so exhausted and so frustrated and had little hope that they turned back again. And so, in that century, not a single person reached Kublai Khan and explained to him why Jesus is truly the Son of God. And why he died on the cross, was buried, and rose again on the third day, and that he lives today. Kublai Khan never heard this message. And I believe that this was one of the most open doors for the Gospel in the entire history of humanity that we can ever imagine. And it is
it had been a missed opportunity. Today, over almost 800 years later, this part of the world, of the earth, the 1040 window, is one of the most unreached areas for the Gospel all over the world. What would have been possible if those 100 scholars had set out back then? What would have been possible if those 100 scholars had come to Kublai Khan? Just imagine that. And I believe, in today’s time, it has never been so easy to bring the Gospel to the ends of the earth. It has never been so easy. I can sit in a plane here in Frankfurt right now and ten hours later I am somewhere in China. Where, over 200 years ago, missionaries like Hudson Taylor were on a ship for eight months, many missionaries suffered shipwreck and never arrived, were sent off already with their coffins, because no one knew whether they would ever arrive. Now it is as easy as it has never been. I can reach people in Japan with a simple video that I make on my mobile phone via social media. It has never been so easy to carry the message of the Gospel to the whole world. And about 12 years ago, when I was sent out from the FCG here, I went to Ghana. I lived there for a year and afterwards God sent me to various countries, to various nations. I also lived in Giessen for a while. Now I live with my wife not so far away. Could you please stand up for a moment, please. That was a wonderful woman, Lori. We have been married for five years and she is in her fifth month of pregnancy. We are expecting our first child and together we serve the Lord. And for 4.5 years now we have been in full-time service traveling all over the world and preaching the Gospel. Because for us there is only one message that truly must be carried to the ends of the earth. And that is the message of Jesus Christ. And we have a ministry called Lands for Jesus, which is our heart and our passion. And our desire is that every country and every nation on this earth hears this message. We have five full-time missionaries in our team and one of our heart projects. You just briefly saw that in this video. That is the country of Suriname. No idea whether you have ever heard of it. I had never heard of it back then, eight years ago, when God spoke to me. He spoke to me in a dream. He showed me this country and the name of the country. And I thought, it must be somewhere in Africa. The people had dark skin and looked similar in a dream. I thought, it is definitely in Africa. And I had a large map of Africa in my room. And I did not find it. And I was frustrated, because I thought, God, you have spoken to me. It must be somewhere. And then I googled it and found out that they are in South America, north of Brazil, and they speak Dutch there. And this country has fascinated me incredibly ever since. 27 percent Hindus live there, 25 percent Muslims, 35 percent Christians. And the rest is a complete mix of traditional religions. And somehow they manage to live together in unity. But the Gospel must be preached. It is the most forested country on earth, 93 percent rainforest. And as you have seen, we travel by boats into the deep jungle, where there are small villages somewhere. And there we preach the Gospel. People come to faith, people are healed, changed and born again. That is our heart. And next week on Friday we fly to Suriname again for three and a half weeks. We do trainings in the jungle, in the Amazon. We do trainings on the coast, to equip the believers, in discipleship, in church planting, because there are very, very few churches there. And we are doing a huge
City festival on the coast, where there is a children's program, where there are street food trucks, and a large stage where the Gospel is preached every day. People are healed. We have huge bins where they can throw in their witchcraft and amulets and everything else. And then they are burned. And it is amazing what God does, all over the earth. We have seen blind eyes opened, how the deaf hear again. We have seen dead babies come back to life. And I read in my Bible, in Hebrews 13, that Jesus is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. He is the same in the Gospels, in the letters to history. He is the same today and the same tomorrow. And the same things that He does in Suriname and in Africa, He can also do here in Germany. He can also do it here in Frankfurt. I am convinced of that. And I believe that. And I hope that I can encourage you a little with this, to also have the faith, for the place where God has positioned you, to see the same things, also here in your environment. Lorian and I, we will be outside later after the service, also in the café, if you feel like connecting with us or perhaps hearing more about our ministry, simply to find out what we do. We had the privilege in the last 4.5 years, together with our teams, to reach 670,000 people with the Gospel. And thank you as well. And it always continues, because God's dreams are never small dreams. I would never have imagined a few years ago that I have the calling to lead and direct this ministry. And God has placed us there. And exactly, if you would like to connect with us, if you would like to pray for us, support us in one way or another, please feel free to reach out to us. Exactly. I would like to pray now and then share a message with you. Lord, I thank You for this wonderful morning, Lord. I thank You that You are here, that You have brought us together from all over, to come before You, before Your throne, Jesus. Thank You for this opportunity. And I pray that You open our hearts wide for Your Word and that You speak to us in Jesus' name. Amen. I just said it briefly. I believe, and this is truly a truth, God has no small dreams for people. God never dreams small. I believe the only ones who think small are we humans. We are limited by those who limit us. And the Bible is full of people who started with normal circumstances, but entered into a supernatural calling. Why? Because God never wanted us to live by our own strength. He never wanted us to do things from ourselves, but that we trust Him. And perhaps the question today is not what can I do, but rather, what does God entrust to me? That is a much more important question. And I believe that in every person there is a deep longing. A longing to know who I actually am and what I live for? Why am I here? And this longing is not a sign of pride. It does not mean that one is proud, but it is an indication that we were created for more than an ordinary life. We were made for more than simply doing what we do day in, day out? God did not create us simply to exist, but He created us for calling, for goals, and for a promise that He has placed on our lives. As you may have noticed just now, I also like to engage with history. And a man who has fascinated me greatly in recent months is Alexander the Great. And Alexander came from a very small country, Macedonia. It was not a world empire, it was not a center of power, not like the Mongol Empire. And he grew up in the shadow of his father, who was a great, powerful king, Philip II. He was very successful. And
Alexander, he carried something profound in his heart. Whenever he saw his father and looked at himself, he thought, there must be more for me. My life is destined for more than simply being the son of a great man. And when Alexander was twenty years old, something terrible happened: his father was murdered, unexpectedly, brutally. And suddenly, this twenty-year-old young man was king, king of a small kingdom, of Macedonia. And he knew that if he did not act now, if he did not stand up and show strength, then uprisings would come, everywhere in Macedonia. And his passion would be questioned. So he did what many young kings would do, but in an extreme way. He launched campaigns, he started wars, to consolidate his power. But Alexander did not simply choose any enemy; rather, he chose the greatest conceivable enemy of his time. It was the Persian Empire. And it was not a logical step; it was definitely not a safe step. And it was a step that only makes sense if one is convinced that one is destined for greatness. Alexander had deep religious conviction. And no, he was not a Christian, obviously not, because he lived before Jesus; he was rather Greek pagan. But before important battles and before decisive moments, Alexander repeatedly did something. He sought confirmation of his identity. He tried to get himself confirmed. Who am I, actually? And so he went to oracles, he went to certain temples, and he even went into the desert to seek the voices there. Not to hear strategies for the coming battle, but to be confirmed in who he is. His mother had instilled in him very early in childhood that he was the son of Zeus. Zeus was a Greek deity at that time. And so it became fixed in his mind: I must be called to more. And some traditions, some historians even say that he believed he was a demigod. And certain traditions say that in various temples and various oracles, this divinity was allegedly even confirmed. And Alexander believed that he was divinely legitimized. And I am convinced that Alexander did not only want to win. He did not only want to defeat his enemy, but above all, one question drove him. Who am I? But why? Why did this question occupy him so much? You know, even the greatest victories can never silence what only identity can give you. The decisive point is: identity drives our action. What we think of ourselves, who we are, drives our actions forward. Alexander, what he believed about himself determined how he lived. Because he was convinced that he was destined for something great, it moved his actions toward greatness. Because he was convinced that he was not an ordinary human, but that he was convinced he could not lead an ordinary life. Because he believed he was divinely called. He dared battles that were completely impossible for others. He knew that his identity was an engine for his actions. Identity leads to action. Conviction leads to courage. And belief in oneself leads to extraordinary deeds. He was convinced: I am not destined for an average life. I am called to rule the greatest known empire on earth. And I believe we are more similar to Alexander than we perhaps think. Honestly, we too look for encouragement, we look for confirmation, for a word that says: you are right. You are called, you are wanted. The difference between us and Alexander is not the longing; that is the same. The difference is the source. We do not have to go to oracles, we do not have to run into the desert to hear voices. God Himself desires
to confirm our identity. Not through performance, not through success, not through the things we do, not through comparison, but through relationship. And if false identity can lead to such courage, as in the case of Alexander, how much more so an identity that is spoken by God Himself. Alexander had a special role model. He had Achilles, who was also a Greek hero. And he was a special role model for him, always encouraging him to emulate him. And the Bible also encourages us to have role models. The Bible speaks of a cloud of witnesses who cheer us on, who have gone before us. They say, come on, give it, you can do it, you can do it. God Himself works with heroes of faith. And over the last years, I have also been constantly occupied with the persons who have gone before us, who have achieved extraordinary things throughout the world in the proclamation of the Gospel, such as Billy Graham, Reinhard Bonnke. They have also been role models for me. And their life shows that it is God’s, God’s faithfulness. And it is possible. And the Gospel changes nations. And it is wonderful and it is good. But here comes the truth. We may learn from their victories, but we must not rest on them. We must not rest on the victories of others who have gone before us. We may be inspired by them. God does not call you to admire another’s calling, but to live your own. And that is what I want to speak about this morning. In Judges 3, I want to read it very briefly, Judges 3, verses 1 to 4. This is a very interesting story. The Israelites were led out of Egypt. They had been in captivity there for over 400 years. Moses led them out of Egypt through the wilderness for 40 years. Together with Joshua, they took possession of the promised land. And in the Judges, after Joshua has died, we read something very interesting. Namely, God intentionally or quite consciously did not let all the foreign peoples be killed, but left a few behind. And in Judges 3 we read that these are the peoples whom He left behind, in order to test through them all those Israelites who had not experienced all the battles for Canaan. Only to make the generations of the sons of Israel know and to teach them warfare, because they had previously known nothing of it. And then the princes are listed and then we continue reading in verse 4. And they served to test Israel through them, to see whether they would follow the commands of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers through Moses. What we see is that this next generation must fight its own battles. They could not rely on those who had gone before them. They could not rely on Moses and Joshua, but God said, no, here I leave a few behind, so that you learn to fight your own battles. That you learn to deal with it when challenges and difficulties come. When frustration rises, that you do not always only send the others ahead, who have already experienced all that, but that you yourselves learn to step into it. And that you deal with the challenges and difficulties, with the enemies who are placed in your life, to eradicate them yourselves. God consciously left the enemies standing, so that the next generation learns to fight on its own. Not because God had abandoned them, but because He wanted to make them mature. This is a maturation process, of which we read here in Judges. Because faith is not inherited. Joshua could not pass his faith on to the next generation. Nor could Moses pass on his faith. He could shape, but he could not transfer faith, but faith must be lived. And therefore role models inspire us and that is good, but obedience cannot
delegated. Obedience must be lived out personally. And I want to encourage you right now; some of you are perhaps here and you say, hey, I have so many challenges in my life. I have so many challenges and I don’t know how to deal with all these battles. You know, your own battles are not a sign that something is missing in you. It is a sign from God that He trusts you to win these battles. Many of us get frustrated so quickly when we see the challenge before us. And when we don’t know how to deal with it, but actually He says, I have intentionally placed these battles in your life so that you learn how to overcome these things. So do not be frustrated any longer, but take up your Word and face these battles, just as I had to do with the next generation in Israel. God does not call you because you are strong, God does not call you because you are a spiritual bodybuilder, but He calls you because He knows you, because He trusts you, and because He entrusts you with things. He calls you His son, His daughter, His heir, and He calls you Chosen. And He says to you, now stand up and take possession of the land that lies before you. Take possession of the land, not by your own strength, but by identity, because I tell you who you are, because you are My beloved son, My beloved daughter, and because I, the God, stand behind you. Interestingly, we see some chapters, so before, as Joseph was still alive. There was this situation, when they were to enter the Promised Land, there was this great river, the Jordan. And the Israelis said, how are we supposed to cross over? We are almost two million people here, how are we supposed to cross a raging river? And God reminded them that He had parted the Red Sea. And He said, I am still the same God. I can still do the same things. And He dried up this riverbed. But He said, this time I want you not to forget what I have already done in the past. And He told them, I want you to go through this riverbed and each of the twelve tribes shall take a large stone, a stone of remembrance, to remember what your God, the God of Israel, has done here today. And I want you to bring it back to your tents. So that when your children and your grandchildren and your grandch

Die sagen, come on, give it, you can do it, you can do it. Gehorsam
