Greenpeace on the Resolutions of the Conference of Agriculture Ministers

Greenpeace e.V. · Greenpeace Deutschland – Presseportal · 2026-09-25 · Hamburg · Source

Responsibility · main message Justice · carrying

Current agricultural policy endangers the quality of drinking water through inhomogeneous regulation and the absence of labelling obligations, and ignores the will of the population.

The agriculture ministers must finally live up to their responsibility: with a legally secure designation of the affected areas, a nutrient balance for every farm, and the long-overdue labelling of animal husbandry.

The text criticises the resolutions of the Conference of Agriculture Ministers, as the requirements for nitrate-affected areas have been suspended for almost a year. Instead of uniform protection, the ministers are relying on a patchwork of different state rules that will not take effect until 2028 at the earliest. Greenpeace warns of an opaque bureaucratic monster and criticises the absence of a mandatory nutrient balance for every farm. According to the text, this endangers the most important food, clean drinking water. In addition, the rejection of the mandatory labelling of animal husbandry by 11 of 16 ministers is assessed as ignorance towards the broad majority of citizens. The agriculture ministers are called upon to live up to their responsibility with a legally secure designation of the areas, a nutrient balance, and the labelling of animal husbandry.

For almost a year, the regulations for areas with particularly high nitrate pollution have been suspended. Instead of reinstating this uniform protection, Federal Minister of Agriculture Alois Rainer (CSU) and the state ministers are relying on a patchwork of different state rules, which will take effect no earlier than 2028. If each federal state can choose its own fertilization variant, an opaque bureaucratic monster of different regulatory frameworks is to be expected. In contrast, a mandatory nutrient balance for every farm is missing. This endangers our most important food: clean drinking water. Moreover, if 11 of the 16 ministers speak out against the obligation to label animal husbandry, they are ignoring a broad majority of federal citizens who wish for mandatory state labeling. The agricultural ministers must finally live up to their responsibility: with a legally secure designation of the polluted areas, a nutrient balance for every farm, and the long-overdue husbandry labeling.
