Temperance is understood in the Platonic tradition as self-knowledge and in the patristic tradition as spiritual healing and ascetic practice; both traditions emphasize the necessity of self-mastery and moderation.

Temperance is one of the four fundamental virtues of Christian ethics and patristic literature, together with prudence, justice, and courage.

The text analyzes the Platonic dialogue "Charmides" and the Socratic dialectic presented therein regarding the virtue of temperance (sophrosyne). Six definitions of sophrosyne are presented and each is refuted, until a provisional agreement on self-knowledge and knowledge of knowledge is reached. The author then contrasts the patristic understanding of temperance in Basil the Great, John Chrysostom, Gregory of Nyssa, and John the Sinaites. The Fathers understand sophrosyne as holistic harmony, healing of the spirit from passions, and a supernatural state through grace and vigilance. Ascetic sources such as the Philokalia and Isaac the Syrian describe temperance as a daily practice of mastering the thoughts. The text remains at the level of description and comparison, without taking a theological or philosophical position of its own.

The Virtue of Temperance in Plato’s Charmides and the Church Fathers Essays 02.10.2026 Michalis Koutsos, Philologist – Author The Charmides is a Platonic dialogue on the subject of temperance. This dialogue may be scandalous in certain points that refer to other eras, yet it addresses the topic from many angles. Socrates begins with physical beauty and speaks of spiritual beauty, which must be combined with physical beauty. The Platonic dialogue echoes the Socratic dialogue, which, however, was not written by Socrates but preserved by his best student, Plato. Plato utilizes all the tools of the Socratic examination of topics, such as the maieutic method and inductive reasoning, while simultaneously employing “irony.” All of these elements constitute the Socratic Dialectic. The dialogue took its name from Charmides, who was a very beautiful young man who appeared in Socrates’ company, and everyone admired his beauty. Socrates takes this fact as an occasion to speak of spiritual beauty, which, when it complements physical beauty, results in the perfect combination. The characters of the dialogue and the discussion Besides Socrates, whom his friend Chaerephon approached to tell him how he had escaped the destructive battle of the Athenians at Potidaea in Chalcidice, there are Critias and Chaerephon. After the answers Socrates gave on this matter, some young men arrive, who admired Charmides for his beauty. When he himself arrived, everyone was left with their mouths open, and Socrates found the opportunity to tell him that, if he also possesses spiritual beauty in addition to physical beauty, he will lack nothing. Critias takes it upon himself to defend him and tells him that Charmides is very “good and noble,” which was the ideal of the Athenian citizens. Charmides had a headache, and Critias begged Socrates, if he knew any remedy, to make it pass. Socrates said that, if he chews a leaf from some tree and recites the incantation he received from the Thracians, he will get well. But in order to recite the blessing, he must have temperance, so there is no need to chew the leaf. Socrates finds the occasion to criticize the doctors, who do not try to heal the patient first spiritually and then physically, but are content with the body alone. However, this is one-sidedness, because the human being, body and soul, is a whole, and therefore, when the whole, the human being, is healed, the part, namely the body, is also healed (theory of the Whole). And this will happen if they hear good words that cultivate temperance. Therefore, physical health depends on spiritual health, and spiritual health depends on temperance, and thus the discussion on temperance opens up. The Socratic methodology in the dialogues Before, however, we enter the topic of the discussion, it is interesting to see also the methodology that Socrates followed in the discussions. He begins with “irony,” that is, he pretends to ignore the topic, and encourages his interlocutors to investigate it. Then the first opinion is formulated, which proves not to be the correct one. Subsequently, Socrates tries to elicit (maieutic method) the next answers, which are again refuted. The discussion proceeds inductively, that is, from many cases they arrive at a general conclusion. All of these constitute the method of the Socratic Dialectic. The Socratic Dialectic is a method of seeking the truth through dialogue, which Socrates used systematically. It is not a simple exchange of opinions, but a structured process of question and answer aimed at testing the logical consistency of the interlocutor’s positions, overturning false certainties, and leading to a deeper, commonly accepted definition of concepts (such as justice, virtue, or courage). All these things Socrates did not sit down to write, nor did he have a specific subject of teaching. Socrates, like Christ, taught but did not write, and thus he left us nothing in writing. His best student, Plato, wrote them down later, preserving but also enriching and deepening Socrates’ teaching, which was nothing other than methodology, that is, how one ought to think and how to investigate in order to find the truth of things. This is what happened in this Platonic dialogue as well, where six definitions were given, all of which proved not to be absolutely true and precise, and thus the discussion is left to continue in the future. With this aim, Socrates wants to say that all things must constantly be investigated, discussed, and new views formulated, which is the quintessential object of all sciences. The six definitions of sophrosyne and their refutation I. Definition: Sophrosyne is to act calmly and not to rush, “to do everything in an orderly manner and quietly, both in walking in the streets and in speaking, and to do all other things in the same way. And it seems to me, he said, that it is a kind of quietness in general.” Refutation: Since sophrosyne is something beautiful, it must be combined with the speed of thought and action. To act with difficulty and slowness in all cases, as “dysmatheia” in relation to “eumatheia,” is not a beautiful thing. “Therefore, if sophrosyne were a kind of quietness, the life of the sophron would not be quiet.” II. Definition: Sophrosyne is shame, which makes a person shy, “sophrosyne makes one ashamed and makes the person shy, and sophrosyne is what shame is.” Refutation: However, shame is something bad, because we hesitate to act in a timely manner, whereas sophrosyne is something good, because having it, a person acts correctly. This is also supported by Homer: “Do you not believe Homer when he says well, saying that shame is not a good thing for a man to have?” III. Definition: Sophrosyne is to limit oneself to one’s own affairs, “to do one’s own things,” that is, the identification of sophrosyne with “oikeiopragia.” Refutation: In all jobs, the craftsman, the employee does not deal only with his own affairs but also with those of his fellow citizens. The one who limits himself to his own affairs and is indifferent to others is not sophron, unless he does not know what to do for others. “Thus, they are sophron not by doing only their own things.” He then makes a distinction between the work, which is always good, and the poem, which is not always something good. IV. Definition: Sophrosyne is to do beneficial deeds. Refutation: The one who does evil does not act with sophrosyne, but the one who does good, and sophrosyne always does good. If, however, someone does beneficial deeds without knowing it, he is not sophron but does what he does by chance. V. Definition: Sophrosyne is self-knowledge. Refutation: If someone does something good and is unaware that it is good, he has no awareness of what is good and what is bad. Therefore, he must know and be absolutely certain that he is doing something good, because if someone does what he thinks is good, while it is not, he may ultimately do evil. “For ‘Know thyself’ and ‘Be sophron’ are the same.” VI. Definition: Sophrosyne is to know well what one is doing. Agreement: Thus they reached an agreement and concluded that sophrosyne is to know what one knows and to know what one does not know, “to know what one knows and what one does not know.” Sophrosyne here is the science of knowledge and the awareness of ignorance. Therefore, it is a great good for people that each one does well what he knows and leaves what he does not know to the “experts.” To this common acceptance is now added the questioning of whether it brings happiness, and not the knowledge of the good and beneficial, “whether it would be beneficial for us to know,” and the conclusion was: “for we would live the life without sin, both we ourselves and those who possess temperance and all the others who were under our rule.” But does it bring happiness? Critias, who saw that Charmides could not get the better of Socrates, takes it upon himself to help him, but he himself had no answer to this question either. And so the discussion does not end here, it remains open, just as the topic remains open, which requires further investigation. It is time now to see what the Fathers of the Church say about temperance and then to make a comparison, to see the differences. The Fathers of the Church on temperance Temperance constitutes one of the four cardinal virtues of Christian ethics and patristic literature, together with prudence, justice, and fortitude. In the teaching of the Fathers of the Church, the term does not mean merely self-control, but holistic harmony, spiritual equilibrium, and the salvation of the mind from the passions. Basil the Great Basil the Great defines temperance as the victory of reason over desires and passions. He teaches that temperance means keeping measure in all manifestations of life (food, drink, sleep, speech) and not only in carnal pleasure. Saint John Chrysostom The holy Chrysostom directly connects temperance with the proper management of the issues of daily life. He considers temperance as the “mother of virtues” and the foundation for a peaceful family life. He emphasizes that the temperate person is not captured by the vain things of the world and keeps his soul pure. Saint Gregory of Nyssa As a deep theologian and philosopher, Gregory of Nyssa examines temperance through the prism of the return of man to his pre-lapsarian state. Temperance is the virtue that heals the fragmentation of human nature by sin. It is the state where the soul finds again its original beauty (“according to the image”). Saint John of the Ladder (Sinaites) He defines temperance as the “universal quality of the soul” that remains unaffected by the thoughts of carnal desire. For the Sinaites, temperance is a super-natural state that is achieved by the grace of God and constant sobriety (spiritual vigilance). What do the ascetic Fathers say about temperance In ascetic literature, temperance is not approached theoretically, but as a daily practice. The ascetic Fathers describe with precision the stages of the spiritual journey (sobriety, guarding of the senses, management of thoughts) that lead to its acquisition. The Ladder – Saint John the Sinaites (Word XV: “On Pure Temperance”) Temperance begins with the guarding of the senses (mainly of the eyes and the hearing) and the control of gluttony (greediness). It describes how a simple thought (assault) can become consent to sin. Temperance in practice means the immediate rejection of the evil thought with prayer, before it takes root in the feeling. Philokalia of the Holy Neptic Fathers – Saint Hesychios the Elder Temperance is applied in the “workshop” of the mind. The ascetic stands like a sentinel at the gate of his heart. As soon as a passionate thought appears, he drives it away immediately using the Jesus Prayer (“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”). Ascetic Words – Saint Isaac the Syrian He directly connects temperance with silence, poverty, and removal from the occasions. For Saint Isaac, it is impossible for one to remain temperate, if he feeds his senses with worldly spectacles, comforts, and unnecessary conversations. Evagrius Ponticus Evagrius shows how temperance heals the “desiring” part of the soul. The practical application includes the restraint of gluttony (which constitutes the root of the carnal passions) through a measured diet and manual labor (ergochiro), so that the body remains obedient to the spirit. Some basic differences between Greek and Christian thought The shift of the center of gravity from the “Anthropocentrism” of the Greeks to the “Theocentrism” of the Christians. For Aristotle, temperance, like the other virtues, is the “mean” and the avoidance of excess; for example, between the spendthrift and the miser lies the prudent housekeeper. Man finds the measure with his mind in order to live well. For the Fathers of the Church, the measure is not defined by human reason but by the will of God. The transformation of the passions: In ancient literature, temperance is a constant control of the passions by reason. In Christianity, the goal is not merely the restraint of the passions, but their transformative death (apatheia) and the transformation of their energy into love for God and the neighbor. The concept of humility: In antiquity, the temperate person is proud of his virtue. In Christian thought, temperance is impossible without humility. If someone is self-controlled but proud, he is considered spiritually inadequate. The perception of the human body: Plato considers the body as a sign, a tomb, which must be ruled by the rational soul. The Apostle Paul considers the human body to be the temple of the Holy Spirit, which receives the Grace of God and is sanctified. In conclusion Greek and Christian thought reach the same conclusion, namely that temperance is a virtue very useful for man and for society. However, they start from a different point of departure, and therefore there are also differences. Greek thought, as formulated by the leading philosophers of antiquity, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, etc., is based on knowledge, which is a product of the mind. They may give it different names, e.g., right reason, the calculative part, etc., but it is the same intellectual work. Plato, in particular, connects it with the most important part of the soul, the calculative part, which is called to regulate the other two irrational parts of the soul, the spirited and the desiring. Right reason is the guiding line for man, and it must regulate all his actions. Christian thought, as formulated by the great Fathers of the Church, St. Basil, Gregory the Theologian, Maximus, etc., is based on another power, the heart, because their teaching is based on the love of the heart. However, this is not autonomous but illuminated by the divine factor, which illuminates the human soul and reaches very high levels of knowledge of God, which can lead him to the threshold of Paradise. Temperance for the Fathers of the Church, like the other virtues, is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, a reflection of the greatness of God, which is why it is of great power and incomparable beauty. In conclusion, let us remember the prayer of Isaac the Syrian: “Lord and Master of my life, the spirit of temperance, humility, patience, and love, grant it to me, Your servant.”
