The conscience to fulfil one's own duties is of fundamental importance and requires that, through meditation and allowing the teachings of Jesus to enter the heart, one recognises what God wills and puts this into practice.
The conscience to fulfil our duties is of fundamental importance. And that is why the Liturgy has proposed to us to sing for this first reading: "Show us, Lord, your ways."
The text is a sermon by Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, which is based on the Sunday readings. The central message is that the conscience to fulfil one's own duties is of fundamental importance. The speaker emphasises the necessity of recognising, through meditation and allowing the teachings of Jesus to enter the heart, what God truly wants from one. Using the parable of the two sons as an example, it is made clear that obedience must not only be verbal but must be put into practice. The text is addressed to the faithful, in particular to parents and priests, and calls on them to take responsibility and to practise the spirit of discernment and application. Finally, a Marian devotion to the Mother of Guadalupe is offered, in which help is requested to fulfil one's duties with joy and hope and to promote brotherhood, especially towards migrants.

Is it not rather your conduct that is unjust?
The first reading from the prophet Ezekiel has reminded us that the awareness to fulfill our duties is fundamental. That is why it is necessary to discover what God desires and expects of me. To this, Christian spirituality calls discernment: separating what God truly wants from me, and not what are simply my desires or my attractions.
The awareness to fulfill our duties is fundamental. And that is why for this first reading, the liturgy has proposed to us to sing: "Reveal to us, Lord, your ways." The ways of the Lord are what we must discover, what we must know.
"Guide us with the truth of your teaching." That is to say, the psalm is telling us that, through the teachings of Jesus, of the Gospels in particular, we will come to know what it is that God wants from us, especially if we let it fall into the heart, not only into the brain, into the intellect. This is for understanding, but where the will moves is in the interior, because there God speaks what he wants from me.
From there, it is indispensable to have a time of meditation, that is, to discover what is moving in my interior. For example, when we see a migrant who has nothing to eat and it moves in my interior to say: "I am going to bring this to him." Those are movements of the Lord that take place in our interior, and those are the ones we have to discover.
That is why the life of Jesus and his teachings are the way to arrive at the house of the Father, to heaven. And in this sense, in the second reading, Saint Paul exhorts us with full clarity: "Do nothing out of rivalry or out of presumption."
That is to say, ah, this person did this to me, I am going to pay them back like this, because I am more powerful, no! What is it that Saint Paul tells us? He finishes by saying: "Have the same sentiments that Christ Jesus had,… and all publicly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord." He is the way, he is the life. And there, to this second reading, we were also responding affirming: "My sheep hear my voice, I know them and they follow me."
That is why you, the faithful, those who are already parents, have this responsibility of being the head. We priests, more responsibility of being a guiding head, a guide for you, and thus all of us exercise this spirit of knowing and applying what God asks of us.
In this same line, Saint Matthew offers us a new element in the Gospel: he describes that obedience must be assumed, not only accepted in word, but fulfilled and put into action.
And that is why he narrates to us this parable of Jesus, who said to the chief priests and the elders of the people: "What do you think of this? A man had two sons. To the first he ordered: 'Son, go work today in the vineyard.' He answered him: 'I will go, sir.' But he did not go… The Father said to the second. This one answered him: 'I do not want to go.' But he repented and went."
"Which of the two did the will of the Father?… The second."
Although the first is the one who said yes, but did not go; the second who said no, repents and assumes the true path, the path of life.
That is why I propose to you that we open our heart to our mother Mary, because as a mother, and here there are many women present, you have a great heart and especially to help your children.
She is our Mother. Let us ask her that she assist us to be responsible for our duties and that we always carry them out with joy and with hope. We stand up, we open our heart to her, in a brief moment of silence.
Our Mother Mary of Guadalupe, remembering that you came to make known "the true God, by whom one lives," we ask you to assist us to acquire full awareness of the vital importance that the teachings of Jesus have, and to achieve that our conduct manifests the same sentiments of your Son.
You contemplated the anguish of your beloved son Saint John Diego, and you decided to show him your love and mercy. Help us to trust in your love and to foster brotherhood and solidarity in all areas of everyday life. Especially today we ask you for the migrants who seek a dignified life, and for this reason have left their place of origin.
Help us to consolidate good and lasting foundations, which make it possible to achieve the civilization of love, in our beloved homeland of Mexico. And as a fruit of that community effort, let us be fully convinced that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
All the faithful present here this Sunday commend ourselves to you, who shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope.
O clement, O merciful, O sweet Virgin Mary of Guadalupe! Amen.
