The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation for all believers, whether living or dead, being raised to new life at his return, and this hope is meant to bring comfort and watchfulness.
The text is the final sermon in a series on 1 Thessalonians and deals with the question of the return of Jesus and the readiness of believers for it. The preacher distances himself from speculative end-times scenarios and confines himself to the biblical text 1 Thessalonians 4:13–5:11. He explains that Paul wanted to comfort the congregation, which was worried about deceased believers. The central message is that the resurrection of Jesus forms the foundation for the hope of the resurrection of all believers. The text calls for watchfulness, sobriety, and mutual encouragement. The preacher emphasizes that the New Testament letters are meant to give comfort and orientation, not speculation. He encourages the listeners to reorient their faith and not to be distracted by the fast-paced world.

Today we have the last sermon in our Thessalonians series. I saved this topic for myself because I would also like to preach it myself. Today it is about readiness, so the sermon is called "Ready." And it deals with or revolves around the fact that Jesus is coming again and how one can prepare for that. We are in a core doctrine of the New Testament that Paulus triggered in the first Thessalonians letter, chapter 4 and 5. And I think we can hope to learn from it. And if we don't learn anything new, then at least we can reorient ourselves. Because the world is quite fast and we are easily distracted from the important things in our lives. And many things, how we cope with them and get through challenges, have to do with what attitudes we have, what perspective we have. That's why it's cool to deal with it. I know that some of you are quite challenged with this topic, because there are 100,000 theories and 100,000 clips, a heap of books that deal with the future of humanity and what Jesus does and who has to come before and so on. And it is hard to really get an overview, because there are so many different things that you can sometimes be overwhelmed by them. And some of you may also come from a Christian upbringing where fear was rather triggered with the fact that Jesus is coming again, where that did not make hope or was a nice thought, but where you rather got scared and where it was maybe also used for upbringing. Watch out, little eye, what you see, because the Father in heaven looks down on you. You know that, right? I also have a good, dear brother here in the congregation who told me that he once was so scared as a child, that he had not found his parents, that the Rapture had possibly taken place and he was left alone. Yes, you can already tell, right? It is a charged topic. Now I have you, right? Very good. We want to limit ourselves today to what is in the first Thessalonians letter, because the topic is big. And that's why sometimes I don't really try to get into it, because it is so extensive and there are so many theories. And today you simply get what I think. Is that good? Yes, one may have quite different opinions on this topic in nuances, because Jesus loves those who love him and who have understood that he died on the cross, rose again, that he will come again and create a new world and also in between the judgment. But how exactly that fits together and how exactly it is, there are different theories and we may have different opinions there. So I want to forgive you today. If you are hearing me now and you say, well, I heard it differently and am of a different opinion, then let us hug after this sermon. It is all okay. And I am right. Okay. I will read the text through in one piece with you once again. You can also read along online, if you still have a paper Bible, then you find it in the back, 1. Thessalonians, page 3.120. So 1. Thessalonians 4, 13 to 5, 11. I will read according to the New Life translation. And good to know is, the Thessalonians had two questions. Once, what is with the people who have died, what do you do with them, God? And the other, they have questions, when will what happen? So, and the two questions are answered by him in the text. Are you ready? New Life. And now, brothers, I want you to know what happens to those who have already died, so that you are not sad, like those people who have no hope. Because because we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God through Jesus will bring back all deceased believers when Jesus comes. I can tell you this
with a word of the Lord, saying, therefore, Jesus himself said that we who are still alive, when the Lord returns, will not come to him before the dead. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, under the call of the archangel and the sound of the trumpet of God, then all the believers who have already died will first rise from their graves, and together with them we also, the rest, there is such a word as we survivors, we survivors, who are still living on earth, will be lifted up on the clouds into the air to meet the Lord and to remain with him forever. Comfort one another therefore with these words. Okay, comfort is the direction here. Now I really don't need to write to you how and when all this will happen. For you yourselves know exactly that the day of the Lord will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night. When people say, peace and security reign everywhere, then the catastrophe will break over them so suddenly, as a woman in labor is overwhelmed by the pains of childbirth, and then there will be no escape. But you, dear brothers, do not live in the darkness and will not be surprised when the day of the Lord comes, like a thief. Now, note the tone of voice. But you, dear brothers, do not live in the darkness and will not be surprised when the day of the Lord comes. For you are all children of the light and of the day. We do not belong to the darkness nor to the night. Be therefore watchful, that the consequence of this is that you are children of the light. Be therefore watchful and do not sleep like the others. Remain calm and sober. The night is the time for sleeping, and whoever gets drunk is drunk at night, at least most of them. We, however, who live in the light, want to keep a clear head. We arm ourselves with faith and love and protect ourselves with the hope of redemption. The Elberfelder, closer to the text, says here, we, however, who are of the day, let us be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and as a helmet the hope of salvation. Cool, right? For God did not will to punish us, but to save us through Jesus Christ, our Lord. A clear statement of what Jesus wants. For God did not will to punish us. He died for us, so that we, whether we are awake or asleep, may live with him. Therefore you should encourage one another and strengthen one another, as you are already doing. So, you can already take that with you and pick out the ones who are ahead of the matter, then you have had a good sermon. Once more for context. They are confused, they have just become new Christians. Paulus had given them a basic instruction in the Christian faith, he had to flee because there was a riot, because persecution had arisen. And probably people from the congregation had already been murdered because of their faith. It is assumed that people from the congregation died and they are now wondering what happened to them. Did God punish them? Did that happen to them because they did something wrong and God let them go? Will they be part of the resurrection at all or not? What happens to those who die, there had never been any Christians who had died before? Just imagine. It is the first generation, everyone came to faith, you have heard, Jesus died, rose again, ascended into heaven, he will return, establish his kingdom, we have to hold out that long. Are you with me? And then the first ones die and they say, okay, are they not included? What is going on? They are totally confused. And to that home Paulus then writes these words. People, the shock of grief and also dealing with the things you cannot calculate in advance do not make any change to the saving will of Jesus. This is a pastoral letter that Paulus writes. And it is also important,
that we know that most things, including the Revelation, the Book of Revelation, have been written so that people receive guidance and comfort and not a basis for speculation. They have a very specific direction. God does something good for the first Christians with these books and helps them to cope with reality. But we can learn from them and make deductions. That is to say, the letters of the New Testament are not written to us, but for us. Are you with me? We are not the actual addressees, but we are the co-readers. And we are allowed to recognize and deduce certain things from them. The trigger is grief and confusion. This can sometimes happen to us too, that we have a basic system of faith, we have understood something and then life comes. All of a sudden we think we no longer know anything. Because certain things overwhelm us emotionally and we simply cannot put it all together anymore. And then there has to be a Paul or someone else who says, first of all, it is still true and secondly, there is still the information and that is how it all fits together. Put your faith back together. Sometimes our inner life of faith is like a picture field and then life throws a white ball onto it and then our balls fly apart and we have to sort them together again. That can happen. I have ten points that I am now going to count down. Are you with me? Yes? You have heard three points, preachers are cool. But they are not enough for us. And so that you know where you are, we start with ten and at one we are done. Yes? Okay. Number ten. Grasp the significance of Jesus' resurrection. Paul makes the point. He hangs his entire argumentation and his entire comfort, which he has for the congregation that is under pressure, that has lost people and that is afraid that a few people are not included or that they are missing something, he anchors it in a statement in 1 Thessalonians 4:14, for we believe that Jesus died and rose again. We also believe that God will bring back all deceased believers through Jesus when Jesus comes. He makes a statement. People, the resurrection is real. All who happen to still be alive when Jesus comes again will be raised. They will be transformed and thereby join in. But all who have died in faith in Jesus will be raised to new life. Why? Just think about it. We have a forerunner. Jesus died and he rose again. If those who are connected with him die, they too will be raised. That is a very simple message. But it hangs, and everything we say here hangs on the basic assumption or the basic faith that we believe that Jesus, who was such a God, who was the first to die and rise again to eternal life. And he does this on our behalf, he lives on our behalf, he dies on our behalf and he also rises on our behalf and he takes us with him when we entrust ourselves to him, believe in him and practically take refuge in him. It is as if he opens a huge jacket and we all take refuge under his jacket and then have the same fate. Are you with me? Everything hangs on the death and resurrection of Jesus and that is absolutely important. The faith of the Thessalonians hangs on a nail, the death and resurrection of Jesus, and there our hope hangs and everything on which we set our future. That is why it is not a matter of indifference whether Jesus has risen, that it is not just a story, but that it really happened, the living Son of God died, rose again. If we are connected with him, whether we die or whether we live, we are connected with him and will live eternally. That is a powerful message, which he writes again in the memorial book and that is the faith that we have had for 2000 years and into which we plug in.
To follow Jesus also means to believe in the resurrection of the dead, and you can do that if you believe that Jesus has risen. But that is such a pastoral matter, because they are afraid that perhaps those who have died are not included. And he says, Paulus, hey, if Jesus has risen, then you can also understand that there is no reason for speculation, however those who came up with those ideas thought, perhaps it was a punishment from God that they died or whatever, but we do not know that for certain. He will bring them up, it says, he will bring them back, he will bring them out of the tombs and out of the sea, wherever we have died, there he will somehow do something miraculous so that the dead come back to life, but into a new life. Number 9, the first one you have already accomplished, expect that experiences can shake you. I have already hinted at this, the Thessalonians are doing so badly because they have experienced traumatic things. And all of a sudden your system of faith, at least it is shaken, they have not lost their faith, but they are super shaken up. And they need Paulus, who helps them. And I also want to tell you that we are not better than the Thessalonians. And sometimes life is really intense and we experience things for the first time that we could not have imagined. And that raises new questions and that shakes up our picture spheres. And that is okay at first. Paulus is really nice with the Thessalonians. His wish is to comfort them, to build them up, to give them the important information so that it makes sense again. And so that they can grasp hope again and pull themselves together and move forward. And you are also allowed to be gracious with yourself and gracious with others, that there are sometimes simply times of confusion. And then you need help. Then you need other people. Paulus says here twice in the text that they should encourage and comfort one another. Other people. And you can also look for Paulus-types, who perhaps bring some information that others cannot bring, you look for them, you need a good network, one could say. Number 8, that is a very simple thing. Expect that Jesus will come again. That is such a thing that some have taken out of their system of faith or repressed and would rather not deal with it. That is something supernatural. And also something that is hard to grasp. Or because one has had bad experiences. But for Paulus it is perfectly clear that Jesus will come again, verse 15. I can tell you this with a word of the Lord, we who are still alive when the Lord comes again will not come before the dead to him. That means, Paulus simply assumes that Jesus will come again. And if Paulus assumes that, we also assume that. Because Jesus himself spoke of it in the Gospels that he will come again. As he ascended into heaven, he will come again. Why is it good that Jesus comes again? Because he is not yet finished. He has started a thing, namely to set this world in order. And the first part was when he was here on earth. The second part is while he is in heaven, and the Holy Spirit, and we are here. And the third part is when he comes again and fully establishes his eternal kingdom. There is a good future. And he is only halfway through his mission. And his coming again is a very decisive point. That means, simply make yourself ready, to deal with the fact and embrace it. Expect that Jesus will come again. Paulus says here that they assume that he will come again, but they are afraid that the dead are not included. Or that they are only second choice. And to them he says pastorally, hey, probably those were martyrs, right? No, they will be raised first, and they are allowed
even go ahead. That is, they will be honored. It is no disgrace to have died in the faith. There is nothing better about still living, when Jesus returns, the dead and those who have remained faithful. Right, yes? They will rather be honored in this image. But he says, in the end they will be united and come together. Strange sermon topic, right? I don't know if you can take that into next week. Maybe with your colleagues, it is not so easy to discuss. But it is something that can totally shape our attitude toward life, if we have this expectation. And the word return or coming again, Parousia, that is a highly charged term, because the people who heard that back then, they heard something different in it. That is the word that was used when a ruler like an emperor comes home from a military campaign to his capital and the people rejoice, because he has made great spoils and because he returns victorious. And then they go out of the city and the dignitaries first, and those are here, the ones who have already died in this image, are you with me? go out to meet him, greet him. And that was how it was back then, that they held great feasts there and made great processions, sacrifices were made and festivities. And then the whole mass went with the ruler and then marched back into the city, then they had gone ahead of him and then go back into the city and he arrives. If you now imagine that image, and hear what is written here, then it suddenly makes sense. He says, people, when Jesus returns, like when the ruler, when the emperor comes home from his war, then we rush, we are called out of the graves or transformed, we are resurrected, come on, we still see that, yes, and go out to meet him and in the image it is then so that the whole procession then enters on earth. Are you with me? So, and now it is tricky. You old Bible scholars. Yes, what about the Rapture? Have you ever heard that word, Rapture? There are indeed various teachings about the end times. And one is that before it really gets bad on earth, there is the Rapture of the church, they are practically picked up into heaven, then it gets very, very bad, yes, and then the Antichrist comes and then, then really the end comes and then the Kingdom of God comes. Have you ever heard that? Yes? Okay. I tell you today what I think. I think, or have found out, have worked my way through to, yes, that all of that, and the text speaks for it, falls into one event. Jesus comes back only once. We will be raptured, Rapture is cool, but raptured in the resurrection, go out to meet him and then he builds his kingdom. At the same time the judgment falls and God the new, the new creation. I have a very, very simple expectation of the future. Jesus comes back and then everything happens that we hope and believe in. I know that there are other opinions and that is fine to have. And you may also believe something different here, because those are not the most important beliefs. You must believe that Jesus comes back and that he will also hold judgment and that he a new creation, but what comes first and how and where, that is not our main focus. But I have a very, that is my result now, I am 51, yes, I have always avoided preaching about it, because I know what you all think and then we start to discuss and then we stop doing what God actually wants, what we do, so that we are ready for his return. I have no desire for that. Yes. Here in the text it is so, the image, yes, people, Jesus comes back, when he comes back, then there is the trumpet signal, God calls out of the graves and the believers are added to them. Yes, the archangel, that is, the chief of all angels, calls out with, at the shofar, that is, everyone can
to notice that nothing is hidden, nothing is concealed, yes, and then it really gets going, yes. Then everything comes together in one great thing and the Rapture, the word, yes, being lifted up, that is practically this point where we, in the picture of the Parthians, the King's entry, go out to meet him and then are also for the New on the earth. New earth, whatever happens there, you could also give a few sermons. Can you still follow me? The arrival of God, everyone experiences it. You know what? That we believe in the returning Jesus, that is a fundamental article of faith for 2000 years. But there are parts of the church that have forgotten it. I will read you the Apostles' Creed and all the things that we preach today touch on are in red. I believe in God, the Father, the Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, crucified, dead and buried, descended into the realm of death and on the third day rose again from the dead. That we had at the beginning, in verse 2. Ascended into heaven, he sits at the right hand of God the Almighty Father, from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins and the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. That means, if I said, expect that Jesus comes again, that is nothing new, but if we really grasp it and embrace it, it give

Also ich möchte dich heute begnadigen. Tessalonischer Brief, Seite 3.120. Also 1. Are you ready? Neues Leben. Tröstet euch also gegenseitig mit diesen Worten. Klare Aussage, was Jesus will. Was ist denn los? Dann braucht man andere Leute. Ja? Okay.
