Christians should live their faith openly despite possible rejection and mockery, because Christ accompanies them with the reassurance 'Fear not' and has given them gifts for the community.
Fear not, says Christ. I am with you. I have overcome death, and I take you with me on my way. Perhaps you do not always feel that. But I am at your side, quite certainly.
The sermon takes John's vision on the island of Patmos as its starting point and describes the overwhelming encounter with the risen Christ. The preacher emphasizes that John was not moved to proclamation voluntarily, but by calling. The historical placement of the seven churches in Asia Minor is compared with current research, which does not assume systematic persecution. Instead, social pressure through mockery and exclusion is described as the threat to the churches. The preacher transfers this situation to the present, in which Christians are confronted with hostility and mockery. The central message is the reassurance 'Fear not,' which encourages the listener to live their faith despite possible rejection. The sermon concludes with the appeal to use one's own gifts in the service of the community and to tell of Christ.

9 I, John, your brother and fellow partaker in the tribulation and in the kingdom and in the patience in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.
10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day and heard behind me a great voice like a trumpet,
11 saying: Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.
12 And I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And when I turned, I saw seven golden lampstands
13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed in a long robe and girded about the breast with a golden girdle.
14 His head and his hair were white like white wool, like snow, and his eyes like a flame of fire
15 and his feet like burnished bronze, as if refined in a furnace, and the sound of his voice was like the sound of many waters;
16 and he had seven stars in his right hand, and out of his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in its power.
17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. And he placed his right hand on me and said: Do not be afraid! I am the First and the Last
18 and the Living One. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever, and I hold the keys of Death and Hades.
Beloved congregation,
do you – like me – perhaps have your head completely full of images?
One hardly knows where to look or listen first?
We hear this mighty event – only as a report.
One who calls himself John experienced it himself.
He is on the island of Patmos.
Who exactly he is, that is not known.
Perhaps some kind of “spokesperson” for the churches in Asia Minor, who see themselves in the tradition of the Gospel of John.
Why exactly he is on Patmos, that is also not known.
In the past, people thought he had been banished there.
But perhaps he had only sought peace and solitude,
to rest, to recharge, physically and spiritually.
And he experiences this.
Incredible images, from all sides.
Sounds, tones, a voice, trumpets, the roaring of waters.
For me, the report alone is enough to be completely overwhelmed.
How must it be to experience all of this live and in color?
For the “John” who experiences this, it is clear:
Here something great, decisive is at stake.
This is not just a wild dream in which one cannot decipher everything.
Perhaps … he even wishes it were so, but he knows:
I have experienced God.
And what I have experienced, that I MUST pass on to the others who also believe in him.
He does not think this just to make himself interesting. No, he cannot do otherwise.
He has received the commission:
“Write what you see and send it to the other churches!” and he accepts this calling.
We sometimes say:
There, one has found his calling.
And by that we mean: There, someone has discovered what he / she is really good at,
really enjoys doing,
what fills him / her with satisfaction.
Here, I think, it is rather the other way around:
The calling found HIM.
Jesus Christ is here so different from how he has also been experienced before.
Not the brother, the confidant, to whom one gladly wants to reach out a hand.
He is overwhelming. Mighty. Yes, even a bit intimidating.
John has no other choice
But to proclaim this mighty Christ and his message.
I am the First and the Last 18 and the Living One. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever, and I hold the keys of Death and Hades.
That is what he is to say.
It is clear to him where this comes from:
This is Christ.
This is the One in whose hands our life lies, here on earth and in eternity.
And He is certain: This holds absolutely; everything else has no relevance. Either I hold 100% to Him – or I do not. But then I have no share in His salvation. And one cannot negotiate a little on that. I must say that.
In what situation does John say this?
The cities whose Christian communities are to receive a letter are all located in the west of the province of Asia Minor.
Today, that is western Turkey.
They were not doing badly economically,
not least thanks to generous endowments from the Roman emperors.
Great sanctuaries attracted visitors,
and in Ephesus, Pergamum, and Smyrna there were also temples for the deified emperors.
In the past, it was thought that Christians were persecuted
because they did not want to pay homage to the emperor,
but only wanted to pray to their God.
Today, research says: There probably were no real persecutions.
But who knows … perhaps a bit of gossip.
Mockery, if one does not join the majority. Praying to this strange God, whom no one really knows, who has no magnificent temple and who does not even possess any power: He was killed! One does not do that to a god.
No, these Christians … they are rather strange people. We prefer to keep our distance from them.
And then … well. Then one perhaps goes to the imperial temple after all. Because otherwise one would not get the job, and one’s wife should no longer be cut off by her friends. It is not so bad … one goes to church every Sunday, and donates and participates in supporting the poor. That one time in the imperial temple … will not be so bad.
If you are not mistaken about that,
John writes to the communities.
Listen to me, I have seen it! I am called to tell you the following:
YOU are called, by Christ, to another life!
All that the emperor promises you
You cannot rely on that.
It does not bring lasting life.
Life and salvation come only from Christ.
You cannot mix them.
And you should show that you believe in Christ,
that you hold to His word,
with your life you should show it.
And we today?
We are also called.
Our baptism is our calling
To a life with Christ
In His hands lies salvation,
and yes, we too should show with our life
that we believe in that and trust in it.
That is not always so easy
Not even here with us.
My friends,
who are very active in their Catholic parishes
often get raised eyebrows from colleagues
or even open hostility
as to how one can still remain loyal to the Catholic Church.
I remember a ride on the subway
I had pinned a small cross to my coat collar
My opposite passenger saw it
And started to insult me in the harshest terms
Whether I really thought
Such a strange fantasy being could be better
Than human-made orders
And above all, belief in this God
was responsible for the worst atrocities
one could imagine
How I could only remain loyal to such a club?
Everything I tried to argue was simply brushed aside.
Sometimes, it would be much easier to simply say nothing.
To nod when someone attacks Christians
And to think:
I go to church on Sunday anyway.
There I ask God for forgiveness that I said nothing.
It will not be so bad.
Many of us live like that. Yes, I do too. I also sometimes hide away.
It takes courage to show oneself as a Christian in such a situation.
And sometimes the fear is greater than the courage.
Not everyone will experience something like John. So dramatic.
But to all of us Christ has said:
Do not be afraid.
You belong to me. Go your way.
I am with you. Trust in me.
Look at the gifts I have given you:
One of you can speak well
One can listen well
One of you can organize well
And one of you can care for others
All of this serves life.
All of this you have received from me.
Use your gifts for one another.
Tell whom you owe them to.
Tell about me. Tell that I am Love. And do not believe it when people claim to wage war in my name. That does not come from me.
Do not hide with your faith.
It is certainly not comfortable. Silly remarks will come, open hostility possibly as well. It would be easier to go with the flow and say nothing …
Perhaps that is why this important word is there: “Do not be afraid!”
Do not be afraid, says Christ. I am with you. I have overcome death, and I take you with me on my way. Perhaps you do not always feel that. But I am at your side, quite certainly.
And with this certainty it should be easy for us
To live without fear
And to trust in Christ.
Amen.
From the Preaching Workshop
Four Questions on Sermon Preparation to Johanna Graeff
1. What preaching situation do you have in mind?
The sermon is preached twice, at 9 and 10 o’clock, each time in the “Winter Church” in the community hall. One is very close to the congregation members, which sometimes results in a dialogue within the framework of the sermon. The attendees are predominantly older, some confirmands, shaped by a Middle Franconian-Lutheran popular church character.
2. What inspired you in the sermon preparation?
Finding out what the situation of John and the visions of the Revelation have to do with our life today.
3. What discovery will continue to accompany you?
That newer research on the Revelation of John no longer assumes a situation of persecution.
4. What does this sermon owe to the final editing?
A decision between two emphases, both of which were laid out in the original version. The emphasis on “Do not be afraid” and thus the rather pastoral encouragement to the listeners of the sermon.

15 und seine Füße gleich Golderz, wie im Ofen durch Feuer gehärtet, und seine Stimme wie großes Wasserrauschen;
richtig gern macht,
Große Heiligtümer zogen Besucher an
All das, was euch der Kaiser verspricht
So dramatisch.
Aber uns allen hat Christus gesagt:
Fürchte dich nicht.
Du gehörst zu mir. Geh deinen Weg.
