Suffering arises from the illusory notion of a separate, important self; it is overcome through the simple observation of one's own cravings and the realization of the unity of all beings in emptiness.
The Buddhist teaching is such that we immediately feel better when we apply the teaching.
The text is an oral teaching from a Buddhist community that connects rebirth, impermanence, and the practice of compassion. The speaker refers to statements by Karma Tengyal Ling and other teachers, according to which many Western practitioners were monks or nuns in previous lives. He emphasizes that Dharma practice is simple and should not seek better conditions. Using the example of his own thoughts – greed, pride, the desire for a beer – he shows how one can observe cravings without feeding them. With the image of the hare, the bees, and the ants, he illustrates that the same consciousness principle operates in every being. The central message is that suffering arises from the notion of a separate, important self and can be overcome through the realization of emptiness and the unity of all beings.

So, now we're doing the second round on this beautiful Saturday. Today we said goodbye to a dog who was very connected to this institution. And where I have always claimed that it was a rebirth of a Buddhist woman, which of course was bitter to many that I make such a claim. And if Rimbudges himself had not repeatedly emphasized that most Buddhists are reborn as animals or in the formless realm, then perhaps I would have held back more. I have been called out if I were to speak about the lives of others, yes, that is something Rimbudges and the Lamas would not do. And just because one has not heard it oneself, one thinks that they did not say it. That he is an example from Carlo Rimbudges, when at the end of the 70s, beginning of the 80s, he asked a young man, yes, what led to kam that he now hears this teaching here. And Carlo Rimbudges said, yes, I had you back then, you were a dog, I blessed you and that is why you are now in these teachings. I know that the one who had made possible the Grundsamonie of the 16 Kamerpas in West Berlin, a Gelugbar teacher told him, he was once a person in the monastery. Carlo Rimbudges himself said, most born in the West who practice Vatschrayana, Tibetchen, that must practice, well over 80% are former reborn monks and nuns who were in the Vatschrayana. And she said, in all those lives you have constantly listened and studied. But you have not applied it. And that is what I expressed this morning. If one is a monk or nun, then one accumulates so much merit that one is automatically reborn as a human being. But being human alone, if you are then reborn somewhere, because the conditions are not there, because your monasteries are destroyed and you can no longer get into your monastery. Yes, then the chain of being reborn as a human is in the bin, almost now. And that is why we must use the time now. And I say, well, then we are 60, I will practice later, we are 70, I will practice later. Well, I will do it then. And then such arrogance comes up in us, that we, I remember, when a woman from our community, Gabi, died. And then the people sat there and read poems from some poetry book and someone else, I think, read from the Tibetan Book of the Dead. And it was the show, we deceive and cheat ourselves if we do not take it seriously as what it is. When Julian and I were in Czechia, no one at the door expressed that again. The Darmar practice is completely simple. The Darmar practice is nothing complicated. Whether something comes of it or not, that is only our decision. For example, that you got food today, the food that you got today, lies on my decision, which I said, I will make the food this weekend. I will then make the head, then the first block is a bit longer, almost two hours. And then we simply do it now. I make the food, those are the conditions. And I know that the food must have tasted good, because I tasted it. And then the small boiled potatoes to go with it. What does one do? One does what is most straightforward, the simplest. The simplest thing now was that I quickly made the food, all the vegetables, that they get cooked. That was simple. And so Buddhism is simple. You take what is there. You do not look for better conditions. You do not look in the corners for complicated things. Darmar practice is something that is simple. What is it that hinders us from simply doing the Darmar practice? That we always have such, the other extreme is that we have such an exalted Samaritan heroism, that we think we are some kind of heroes, we
save the Wesne. And we go around in a haughty and arrogant manner. And we keep and cultivate all our disturbing emotions. And then we wonder, when we cultivate these disturbing emotions, that we don't feel better. The Buddhist teaching is such that we immediately feel better when we apply the teaching. What is the simple application of the teaching? That means, for example, that I have compassion for myself and look at myself. Yesterday, when I was walking home and then was in my apartment and then had greed, then I thought, if I now knew someone, then I would go there, I would cuddle there. Then I would lie down next to them. There are no conditions for that. You are just wishing for something that simply doesn't work. But I see, I look in my mind and see that. Do you understand? But I don't ruminate on it. That is not then that my life is then blocked or paralyzed or that I am unhappy. It is simply the habit of greed for something. And in the same way, I don't know how many times I have passed by the back at the savings room and there are these bottles of beer. I have definitely in the last week thought 4 or 5 times, I will drink a bottle of beer. I am drinking a bottle of beer now. If I had given in to the feeling, I would not have gotten through the days. Do you understand? If I had drunk a bottle of beer during the days now, I would not have had the strength at all to get through this whole course. Observing means that we observe our beginnings or being proud to fill up. There was such a situation, I do not deny that. It was stated in the program that I would essentially do a Darmatork or a dialogue possibly with the Master. The Master and I and the Master, the Zen Master and I, in reverse, I and the Zen Master. And that I would then say that in English and it would then be translated into Chinese. And I go, where a little pride can be rounded off. Do you understand? My mind to observe, where I become proud, then the whole program is thrown over. Then I do exactly the opposite of what is proud. I said it immediately when I heard it, on WhatsApp Janer said, whether I would possibly be there on the weekend, that you, don't make a head of it, I will push the whole thing through. The whole stress will not be there. Buying the food. Of course, help is always needed, because it is your favorite help. For me, Frühchen and Armbrot, when the people put out the cheese plates, I don't like doing that. But salad and soups and some other stuff. Yes, that is okay. I did the whole thing for two reasons, because I saw that around my corner something like that would come. Yes, I would now there give some teachings, some Dame talks, before Tharanesen, who come from a Buddhist society. And I, Brummi, let me tell you. Of course, such thoughts came up in me. The question is always only whether we feed that. I had today, of course I had not really thought that I would do something to the hare. But there I saw the hare so, how it was racing with me on the Neuropina Street. And really so, right? I always picked it up so and the hare was already running fast and always looking and I then further and further. I would say, almost a kilometer and a half on the stretch is always ahead. And then at some point I became very slow and then I also notice a bit out of breath and turns around. And waits still, until I am quite close, takes a step forward and then goes into the bushes. That would have been the whole time. That is communication. And when I see the hare like that and think of earlier, I thought, well, if we would catch it now, we would have a hare roast. That is not evil. It is our habits of thoughts, of cravings, that we once had. Such a proper
real wild rabbits in red wine sauce. When I say that now, sorry, my mouth is watering. But I don't want to do anything to the rabbit. We used to do races, car against rabbit. And because I was driving slowly, it was for the rabbit's benefit. You saw correctly that it was fun. Why am I saying this? So that we make it clear to ourselves, when we look at the beings around us, the rabbits, the cats, the dogs, the spiders, the wasps, the bees, and understand. That in every single being, in every single one, is the same awareness principle that we ourselves have. There is no difference. They have a different bio-computer. Through the bio-computer, one has different priorities, to be chasing after every flower, when one is such a bee. And the people, the bees, the people, the bees, who do that, they are firmly convinced that it is an important occupation. Just like the ants in the ant hill. The Kameron, who tells about her father, when she was very small, and the father went for a walk in the forest with her. The father always had champagne, mixed with bee honey, made such a sweet thing, and made very small cubes. You put the very small cubes into the ant hill. And then the father already said, look, there you see one ant, that one wants to work a lot, and the others just stand around and chat. Because you look closely, that we in the gathering of all these people, they behave exactly the same as we do. That is the compassion that arises when we understand that we are one with all sentient beings. What is the fundamental thing that leads us there? That is, when we work through the four fundamentals, the impermanence, look closely, where is my self, where is my self? Where the Interpaveda tradition is, everything is composed of particles. But if everything is composed of the same particles, well, where is the self then? In the particle or in the, when one speaks of particles from particles? But if there are no more particles, in Mahayana one says, emptiness and form is teaching, teaching is form, form is not different from teaching. When you then look and examine that precisely, in your mind very intensely, very precisely examine, what happens then? That is, then you see that the whole thing is only an illusory appearance. But if everything is an illusory appearance, what is the next thing you have? That is, we must with all the paths not find a self in ourselves and in no other. Is there only one logic that all beings are one? Here in the Zen tradition an example was given, it said, if one says, the Buddha nature is gold. And gold you can pour into different forms. A pair of glasses, a bowl, theoretically a bell, if one does the whole thing, that would not really sound like a bell, but theoretically a form, one could totally make out of gold, this brass container, the microphone, purely theoretically, one pours everything into gold. And the difference is only the form. But everything is gold. Then I would now the consequence, if that is the form, what happens then, when you melt the forms, the gold, and pour all the gold together, what happens then? We all become one. The microphone is the brass bowl or the piece of wood. The bell is the pair of glasses. Everything becomes one. What is it that brings us to suffering? That is the notion, I the pair of glasses am the important one, I am more important than this piece of wood. That is the Gommen's blows. Then the Gommen says the wood, then says, what is the bowl without me? It only has a meaning if it has me. And the pair of glasses says, what is it, I must always be taken around so that one can see something, how great my significance is. And that is so our ego game beginning. Who has the greater significance? The pair of glasses, the vessel with the rice grains, the bell? From a worldly perspective it would be the pair of glasses. From the standpoint of the Buddhist
Teaching, Bell, and the Germans. She has a small clip from Canon-Hompe-Chicken. He listened to it. And then she says, there Canon-Hompe-Chicken says, now always which difficulties you have. You all have problems there, problems here, this problem and every problem. And then you say, as soon as you apply the four fundamental thoughts, you no longer have any problems. And that is exactly what has happened to me. Personally, I no longer have any problems. That does not mean that I have no pain or itching, having been stung. And what about the itching? That is so ambivalent. It itches and then you scratch. And then you scratch. It is a little pleasant, a little unpleasant. But when it starts to burn too often, when it is a little moderate, that is only an appearance. What is important is, the itching, all of that is not something that is truly solid. We think that the simple explanations are cheap things, people would rather hear the complicated things. How quickly, that I have experienced over the decades, people have the feeling that somewhere, when they do something special, or should do something special, that they then are something special. But we are nothing special. That is really the reason why I have been cooking in the kitchen. No one can say, Horst, puts himself above people. On one side there are teachings, sitting on the throne there are teachings, but no one can attribute arrogance and conceit to me, that I put myself above, that I am too good for anything. Why is it important to make us aware of this? Because if we do not make ourselves aware of what we are doing, then we will very quickly again become the slaves of our mental poisons. Those who give that up. When I think about the statements themselves, that I heard from this video of Osho, where he then says, the experience that he had under the tree, he felt drawn. He became a victim of Mara. And then he says, the black-haired one gave. And then in the heart center, around the heart center, the hair had turned snow-white. The experience had been soldered in. He allowed it that pride and importance were carried in his heart. And if he had understood this, the awakening, and he had said, I will seek a teacher, that he did not want. He thought he had it himself. And that is what must not happen to us. We must never sign up when anything arises. I know a woman, and she has always told me which visions she has from Kamapa and Kanurambodscha. I warned the woman. I said, do not take that so seriously. It is nice that you have them. If it inspires you to do Darmapraxis, then do that. Then do the Darmapraxis joyfully, but it can also be a sign of Mara. And as soon as Mara saw the opportunity, she triggered it in the person. And she only does fake practice anymore. She indulges in importance, and one is so great, because we belong to the elite. We are 220 people. There we are the absolute elite in Central Europe. That we receive the highest teachings in Central Europe, quasi the highest point of the whole Buddhist teaching, receive this instruction. But they are of no use to us if we receive them, because the point, when the point of your air floats and has no foundation, then it simply just floats there. We see the Schwäben and think, we have it. But as soon as we reach for it, it is gone. That is the reason why the foundation is so important. If we now have been reborn as a human, we have accumulated an insanely large amount of merit in previous lives. This insanely large amount of merit that we have accumulated has led to a human body. But that alone is not enough. Many Buddhists that I know have a relatively pain-free good life, because they have accumulated so much merit in previous lives. They always have bowls
offered, have at the screws blown away the dust. When one does cleaning work on a screw, then one has in the next life a pleasant complexion. Then one looks more beautiful. That is one of the things that happen. With me I know that it was not so. I know with me, I have to accumulate so much merit and reduce so much painful karma in a very short time. And I was never frustrated, even when there was pain there. I was never frustrated. What stands there? Never. Think about it, you are never frustrated when you do dama practice. Never. When you work here, never been frustrated, in over 40 years. That is simply because the dama for me is something like eating and drinking, suffering or not suffering. When I am hungry, I suffer. When I am thirsty, I suffer. When I do not train my mind, I suffer. First of all I eat and drink and train my mind. Then I do not suffer. If one wants the simplest experience of the nature of mind, let us say really what has happened with me, that the thinnest, this simplest thing is, you then see in your mind the state of happiness that is without conditions, without causes. What we had spoken about today with the Bodhisattva vow, happiness that is without causes. When we are in the cinema and we put the reels in with the film, our film produces the story on the screen. Why do we often go to such films? Because we want to be touched, exciting, sad, happy end, the mixed feelings, the more beautiful the mixed feelings are. The more feelings we have, that is incredibly great. And just as the projector is our life. The awareness is the projector itself. The mind is the light that the projector makes. And the reel, the film reel is the karmic impression. The projector is from the beginning completely pure. It is not stained by the films that you put on it, whatever Hollywood films, whatever non-communist films or here Nazi films like Jud Süß or so. When you put the reels on the projector, then it projects the images on the wall. But the projector is completely untouched by what is on the strip. We are actually this projector. The mind is the film reel and what is projected. But our awareness is the projector. And this projector has no desire, no attachment, no aversion. Whatever film you put on, it plays through. We decide what kind of film is on it. Whether we are captivated by the film, for example in the cinema, you cannot make a projector, then you have no cinema. The projector is our awareness and is aware of that. Therefore always practice, when you are somewhere at home, always practice again and again that you look in your mind. That you observe yourself, how you act. Desires, aversions, feeling important, feeling unimportant, a fear charged and depressed, trust, observe yourself. These are the film reels. As soon as you get the distance to the film reels, you experience in your mind a peace. You cannot put that into words at all. That is not possible. If you could put it into words, then it would be nothing else than a feeling. And feelings arise and pass away. They have a change. The awareness resting in itself, is complete peace. Without movement. Clear, vast, open. And in this clear, vast openness, in this vast space is the clarity. It can in the confused state, it produces dictatorship, democracy, in the perfect, the Buddha-land itself. When it says in a text, where we are right now, we are in the Buddha-land of Śāriputra. And do you notice anything of that? Buddha-lands we have there all of us, do you notice anything of that? How do you notice it? How do you think that you remember the Buddha-land? When you have beauty, you also do not have beauty. If you now, theoretically, go through the rooms of Ravensbrück
you go, is that also Akanītā, is that also the Buddha-land? It's about the state of a Buddha-land that is of Akanītā, that awareness. That ever all-pervading, open universe, unlimited, open space. That is the Buddha-land of Samana-Bhātra, the Buddha-land Akanītā. We can only see this when our mind perceives the nature of mind, this emptiness and clarity in one's own awareness. The other thing you're saying, that is completely right, the way you say it, is the conception we develop about it. And for example, the land of Buddha-Amitāya is really described in a way of a beauty. We don't know that on earth at all. The Buddha, told one of his disciples, who became his disciple, who was I think a nephew of his or a cousin or someone related. And he had a wife and she was so beautiful and he could hardly let go of the woman. And the Buddha wanted him not to suffer. And then, at some point he told him, he should come along. And then he went along and then he was in a so-called god realm. And it was a huge palace, everything attended to. So in a beauty, as he had never seen in India, although India already had many beautiful guests, many things back then, something so beautiful he had never seen before. And he asked the Buddha, what this is. And he said, then just ask the attendants. And the attendants didn't recognize him now. So, he didn't know who was asking. So, the nephew or his relative there of the Buddha, the

Was macht man? Du nimmst was da ist. Was ist das Grundlegende, was uns dahin führt? Was steht der? Nie. Überlege dir, du bist nie frustriert, wenn du dama Praxis machst. Nie.
