Reality simply is what it is, and making peace with this suchness means returning to one's own center and accepting the boundless goodness of the universe.
The whole of reality is in reality simply just so. And everything else that we take to be real and all our thoughts about it are a detour, a wrong turn. We are moving away from reality.
The text deals with the Zen kōan of Tōzan carrying his bowls and the answer 'no meaning' as the core message. The speaker explains that reality simply is what it is and that our mind constantly seeks meaning and cause. By way of the example of the Buddha's flower and Kāśyapa's smile, it is shown that the whole of reality is contained in mere suchness. The text advises moving from intellectualization to the embodiment of reality and accepting suchness in everyday life. Reference is made to the Daode Jing, which describes the world as sacred and not to be improved. The speaker connects this with the Pentecost thought of making peace with what is, and points to the peonies that turn from red to white. The central call is to return to one's own center and to make peace with suchness.

Sen, the podcast of Chukka Sangha. Iho san si si si va si sum bu sam ko sa ko ja ho romi. From the Shumon-Katoshu, Case 24, Mianz or Midday, true meaning. A monk asked Mithan Kanketze, what is the meaning of Toxan carrying his bowls? The master answered, no meaning. Why then, asked the monk, did Toxan carry his bowls down from the monks' hall? If he wants to go, he goes. If he wants to sit, he sits. Replied Mithan. Yes, this case from the Katoshu refers to Mumonkan 13. There it is reported that Toxan, the old master, goes down to the dining hall, carrying his bowls in his hand. And Seppro, who is just cooking, sees him coming and asks, why are you going with your bowls? The bell has not yet rung and the drum has not been struck. So the metal has not yet been struck. The wooden clapper was also not yet to be heard. Why are you running around here with your bowls? It is not yet midday at all. Toxan turned around and went back to his room. Seppo reported to Ganto, the behavior. Seppo and Ganto were Dharma brothers. And they always made themselves such thoughts about what goes on in the temple. They were like us. Well, is the old one in his right mind today or not, and so on? Do you think that was enlightenment? So, so they are in conversation. And Ganto remarked, Toxan is famous, but he does not know the last Sen word. This remark came to Toxan's ears and he sent his servant to fetch Ganto, to question him what he had meant. You do not recognize me, he asked. Ganto whispered his opinion into his ear. Thereupon Toxan fell silent. But the next day he ascended the speaker's platform and behold, he was quite different from usual. Ganto was in the hall, he went forward, clapped his hands, laughed loudly and said, my congratulations, our old one has grasped the last word. In the whole land no one can surpass him from this moment on. Well, so one can be mistaken. Yes, so this story underlies this question, in the case from the Katoshu. What is the meaning of Toxan carrying his bowls? The master answered no meaning. That must somehow have a meaning, we think. We think, things must all have some kind of meaning. We cannot come to terms with something simply being so. Simply so, we think. It does not go so simply in the world. We make ourselves our thoughts, like the two there, Zeppo and Ganto, they make themselves their thoughts, constantly they make themselves thoughts. And they still have a long way ahead of them to arrive at this answer. No meaning, simply so. We have in the cases already a case number 6, where it is about the flower sermon. The Buddha, supposedly 500 people, someone once climbed this Vulture Peak and said, 50 to 100 go on it, but it was probably not 500. But in the case there were 500, who sat there. And waited as usual for the sermon. And the sermon was awaited, as they spoke about the Dharma. So the people understood it. The Buddha is now once again speaking about his teaching. And on that day the Buddha simply holds up a flower. A Ushinara lotus, not exactly a huge flower, a small flower, he holds it up like that. And everyone makes a show and only one laughs, namely Kasyapa. And then of course the question is, why does Kasyapa smile and all the others look at the Buddha more or less consternated. And the fact is that Kasyapa has grasped the meaning of the flower. Such is reality, simply so, like this flower. And in this simply so lies the whole reality enclosed. The whole reality is in reality simply just so. And everything else that we take for reality and all our thoughts about it, are a detour, a wrong path. We move away from reality. Toxan, he hears Seppo's comment. You are here much too early and so on.
And he turns around. He just lets it be that way. He says, this person is really impudent. It's 12 o'clock, that's the time to eat. I'm here on time and he says, what are you doing here with your bowls? No, he doesn't do any of that. He turns around. He simply is that way. And that is a colossal relief in life. When one simply steps out of the world of judgment and accepts it to be that way. As it is. As it is with Toxan. Yes, so, what is the step we can take toward that? One could say, it is the step from the, in quotation marks, spiritualization, which we so love to practice, toward the embodiment of reality. We take this step. How can we embody reality? When we practice Kohanmu, we have various aspects there. We are usually asked to first explore Mu itself. So, this answer of Yosho, the dog has the Buddha-nature answer, Mu. Simply taking this Mu first and questioning it oneself. Then we are asked various questions, for example, what is the essence of Mu, what is the form of Mu, what is the movement of Mu. And at the end we are asked by our teacher, show me Mu, the request or the call to embody Mu. There is also the hint given to trace Mu in all chakras, to actually locate this Mu in all chakras. And then we practice anew, Mu in the dokusan space. And our teacher says, well, can you embody it a little more? Or was that already it, yes, so here in the knee, that's a little bit too little. Try a little from the hara, Mu, so that one can also perceive that you have embodied it, yes. And then we practice that. And the interesting thing is that when we let it be that way, the being of Mu, when we truly embody it, that we then in that moment actually bring together the two sides of reality. So, reality has something bipolar about it. On the one side, it is that way, that is normal. Jürgen once hung up a sign here. We are not at Wunschtir here, because we are here where it is as it is. It was a nice idea, yes. To bring us back to the essential once again. We are here where it is as it is. And yes, and through the embodiment, we bring the aspect of boundlessness, of emptiness, of incomprehensibility, of unquestionability together with the being-that-way. Yes, we have many opportunities to accept the being-that-way, to accept reality. Every day is a good day is an expression of that, of accepting the being-that-way. My cat dies, every day is a good day. My horse is sick, every day is a good day. My mother was buried the day before yesterday, every day is a good day. If we take this seriously, we can feel the boundless goodness of the universe that meets us from the being-that-way. If we do not accept the being-that-way, if we say, why does my cat have to die now? Well then we are in conflict with reality. Then we cannot truly accept the goodness of the being-that-way. Yes, and then we are at our concepts and thoughts. We also do not advance to the realization that the mutual penetration of what we accept with what we ourselves are right now, is precisely the source of our compassion. If we manage to accept the circumstances of the being-that-way, then we can let go of applying mental violence by saying, no, not like that, not with me. And then we fall out of this goodness. In themselves we are by nature familiar with the being-that-way. So when we come into the world, we are being-that-way. We are also held in the boundlessness. There are no limits for us. Our mind is there and our body is there and it all belongs together. Inevitably we notice, the way-of-being of things, that is our own nature. What we love in the world, we can
ultimately discover in ourselves. The infinite expanse of the sky, the unshakable support of the earth. All of this we can only perceive when we notice them as qualities of our own perceiving mind. Our own perceiving mind is not separate from it. The mind that is active in each of us and the mind that is boundless and pervades all are not two, says Morinaga Roshi. But we do not believe that. We do not believe that we can actually find safety in this non-duality, but we rely on our judgments, on our aspects of separation from the world. With every step into separation, a step into unhappiness, into suffering. In the 29th chapter of the Daute Ching it says, do you want to improve the world? I do not believe that is possible. The world is holy. It cannot be improved. If you touch it, you destroy it. If you treat it like an object, you lose it. There is a time to be ahead, a time to stay behind, a time to be in motion, a time to be at rest, a time to be powerful, a time to be exhausted, a time to be safe, a time to be in danger. The masters and the masterwomen see things as they are, without trying to control them. They let them go their own way and abide in the center of the circle. So, if we want to save the world, then please let us first save ourselves. That is the clever thing we can do. Because there is no one else we can save. And the return to the center, that is the act of infinite kindness. Grief, confusion, longing, or fear, those are not wrong. A painful feeling is merely a sign that you have left the center. Then please mobilize your own ambulance and drive back to your center. Settle down there again when you arrive in the center. When you have found peace, peace reigns in the world. Also all the dissonances that you hear so much will then become a wonderful music of the spheres, a suite for the unaccompanied mind. In harmony with what is, the mind finds its center everywhere, nowhere its periphery. The part becomes the whole. What is becomes what should be. The sky takes its rightful, its only place. On earth. This morning I asked myself, these Easter lilies that Nathalie has placed for us in various spots. They were bright red on Thursday before Easter. And now they are bright yellow or white. What do they think they are? We bought red Easter lilies and now they are white. Why? By asking this question, we can make clear how crazy this question of why is. They are simply white, at Easter. Perhaps that is why they are called Easter lilies, white, when they become white at Easter. I do not know. In any case, they are the working of the Suchness. They symbolize that for us. Suchness is essentially a transformation. That is precisely the good thing, that it does not remain as it is. And that is what we strive for in the Zen, to make our peace. The spirit of Easter in the Zen is peace with the Suchness. Peace with what is, accepting that, recognizing it in ourselves and being able to be at peace with it. Erwiderte Mithan. Keine Bedeutung, einfach so.
