Christian faith is not a system of demands and confessions, but a gift that carries a person even in their doubts and failures and makes them, as one who has been gifted, a blessing for others.
I believe that is the great thing about our Christian faith, that it is a faith that does not demand, but gives, and then says, as a person who has been given, you will, in a certain automatic way, if it truly touches you, be a blessing.
The text is a sermon for a jubilee confirmation, which builds on the personal memory of one's own confirmation and contrasts it with the experience of violence and being overwhelmed in church education. The central message is that faith must not be reduced to rigid confessions and demands, but is to be understood as a gift and blessing that includes doubt and blows of fate. Using the example of the prophet Elijah, it is shown that God catches and strengthens a person again even after mistakes and detours. The text calls on people to recognize their own 'angels' – those who have helped – and to give them thanks. The Beatitudes are presented as a guide, formulated in the indicative: a person is already blessed and thereby becomes a blessing for others. The contemporary relevance lies in the critique of hatred and condemnation on the internet and the lack of listening in society. The text closes with the thought that Christian faith does not demand, but gives, and that from this a life of gratitude grows.

Do you remember? 14 years old, my goodness, that was a long time ago. I look around here in our ranks, I think that statement applies to all of us. That was quite a long time ago. Confirmation time. Coming from childhood, into the time of youth with all its uncertainties, but also exciting topics on the way to the responsibility of adulthood. Then a pastor, maybe here and there already a female pastor and confirmation classes. I always rejoice when people are happy to remember and in baptismal conversations and wedding conversations for example say, Pastor, I haven't been to church for a long time, but I fondly remember my confirmation. Unfortunately, there are also the other stories, where mostly older people tell of confirmers who even sometimes laid hands on them. And I think, how terrible is it when in the space of the church, where it is truly about God's love and about what sustains and carries us in life, one even experiences violence, whether that is physical or verbal. I also find a constant demanding, you must, you should, and God sees everything, is a form of violence, because it does something to people. I hope and wish that you, that you have good confirmation experiences. And if it is different, then one may also, if possible, let such a bad experience go and take good thoughts, for example from this service, and place them in that spot and say, this is how it should be. It is about encouragement, it is about strengthening and strength for our path, it is about blessing and the blessing of God is something radiant, open, wide and never something violent and confining. Back to confirmations, back then very daring confessions of faith were often demanded of confirmands. I believe that God and Jesus is the Lord and Highland of my life, that he died for me and for all my sins and then came many sentences that theologically have a deep truth. But with this intention, I believe that for people with 14, I believe, are an overburdening. One says it then and I did exactly the same in the hope that one manages it. And I don't know how it was with you, because you noticed for the first time, I am not so sure about that. Maybe I was lucky and it was in your childhood in the confirmation time a certain security was there, because the faith also still had something childlike about it. But then suddenly heavy experiences, also fateful blows come along. The faith wavers and swings and am I then actually still on this course of confirmation? Absolutely, definitely. Because I believe, these confessions of faith, however theologically correct they are, are in the matter pedagogically or religious-pedagogically seen not unproblematic, because they make a human believe. It would be so simple with faith, you just have to say yes. Today we formulate it differently. There is no longer expected, do you believe, but there is asked, do you promise and do you want or do you want to keep the question about God, the seeking after God, again and again anew in your life. So there the question, the seeking is already built in, so that no one afterwards has to say, I did promise something that I could not keep. And I believe, in the meantime it is important, again and again also to say, also in sermons in services, that to a firm faith, that holds and carries, not only the strong faith statements of the Bible belong, which we will also hear as confirmation verses and which are valuable and great and holy, the verses belong just as much, as for example Jesus said them, my Father, if it may be, let this cup pass from me. Whoever has said that in their life once, God, if it can somehow be, spare me from this, is on the path of faith just like Jesus, because those are the words of Jesus. And whoever later after a fateful blow said,
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? It is not that one has left the course of confirmation, but stands firmly in this track, because these are the words of Jesus. Biblical piety one simply cannot have, for piety always also means doubting, falling back, finding again, being found again, and quite honestly, the greatest moments in life are not those where we find something again and the joy over it, and not so much what was always already taken for granted. And in the Bible there are beautiful stories of how God rejoices in heaven over every one who finds their way back to the track, which has to do with this faith and this hold of faith. But that also means that one is allowed to lose it in between, because God does not lose us. That is his firm promise. And I love this reading so much, the one we have just heard of Elijah, the prophet, who has done a lot wrong in his life, whereupon he looks back and why he flees and is afraid, is, he has killed many hundreds of Baal priests, that is, heathen priests, and wanted to serve his God with that. And did not understand at all that one never serves God with violence and war and hatred, but denies him. Now he flees, from those who want to take revenge, would most like to die, but God goes after him. He would actually have a lot of reason to say, listen, prophet, you have really not understood what is in my will, namely to protect life, to preserve life, to promote life, yours as well as that of others and of this world, quite in critical dialogue, also in dispute, but not with weapons and not with violence. But God sends an angel and the angel places something at his feet that strengthens him and nourishes him. And not some kind of hardtack bread, but a roasted loaf, I find that in this word alone so much loving is contained, perhaps it is even already lightly spread, with a nice fruity spread, as they had back then. So loving, warm roasted bread and with it a jug of fresh water. That means, when the prophet or any one of us strays from this path, because we cannot be perfect and do not have to be, then God comes and finds us again. Somehow he has his angel who helps us up. And perhaps this day of the jubilee confirmation is a good occasion to think again, what are actually the names of my angels who encountered me back then. And who are the angels who still live at your side now and who know that about you, that you feel that way, but perhaps there is also someone who would be enormously happy if someone after many, many years says, do you actually know what you were for me back then? I have already done that a while ago and have looked into many faces really with tears, because people said, that touches me so much right now. I thought you were the student who everything passes by. And now you tell me that I was important to you as a teacher. Incredible. And conversely I myself noticed what that does to a person. Tell each other, if there are angels who have helped up, who have helped further, who have supported, who in this way were boats of God's love. And the story gets even better. Elijah drinks and is and then he lies down to sleep again. So somehow the strength, the power to really get up is still missing. Then the angel comes again and also not with the pointing finger and says, listen, you still have not understood, but very lovingly he says, come, have some more, there is still more for you. And then he goes. And then Elijah goes forty days and forty nights. That is a sign of fullness. It is then for a moment everything is good. And we know ourselves, it is never always good forever. On the Weser there was once a graffiti, unfortunately it is now painted over. I found that so great. It said, there is
No good times, only good moments. It is not always good. But when there is a good moment, where someone says, come, stand up, be and drink, have courage again, I am at your side, then it can go on. At least the next steps. When it becomes difficult again, I stumble and perhaps fall, then I may hope again that an angel comes, man, woman, child, older person, and says in the name of God, you are not alone, stand up. And what is then my part on this path? When God comes toward me, when he actually takes over the decisive part, I believe that is the very great thing about our Christian faith, that it is a faith that does not demand, but gives, and then says as a person who has been given, will you in a certain automatism, if it truly touches you, be a blessing. You actually cannot do otherwise, because you have received everything. I want to bless you and you will be a blessing. It stands in the first book of Moses, so right at the beginning of the Bible. Sometimes you read the translation and you shall be a blessing. That is because we humans are always somehow accustomed to it. When you receive something as a gift, then you also have to perform something. Or you perform the first thing, then you receive something as a gift. This connection, God is so great, so holy, that he does not need it. He says, I give you what is there, your life, your gifts, also your doubts and sometimes also hard things, that then bring you back onto another course. Sometimes you do not know why and patterns through, but I am there. God gives and then he rejoices when as those who have been given we act and work in a blessing. Among the Reformed Christians the word is then life out of gratitude, so following out of gratitude. That is a very beautiful thought. Not as imperative, as indicative. You are blessed and you will be a blessing. You already are. Perhaps also simply communicate that to one another. Where are you a blessing for me? Where can I be a blessing for you? I believe, you will hear a lot from people that you are that and always were and will be. And when one then thinks and says, I would like to have it more concrete, in the past some first thought of the Ten Commandments, that one should always think of. But when people for example parents came to me and said, Reverend Pastor, please teach our boy the Ten Commandments, then I thought, okay, so I believe, someone has not yet exactly understood what it is about in faith and in our covenant. It is about the blessing, about the gift and about the life out of gratitude. I believe, the orientation help is then beside or after before the Ten Commandments still the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes of Jesus. Because they are exactly that, they are an encouragement. They say, not you must be that, you must be that, but you are it. Blessed are you, when you are peacemaking, when you are merciful, when you are spiritually poor, so not claim that you have understood God, but truly know, I am a receiving one. And then you will be a giving one, through mercy, through peacemaking. And I believe, in our world, in our everyday life, that is something very great, in a time where people hardly still listen to each other, where people only still make some kind of statements and all those who think differently, even condemn, what circulates in the internet in terms of hate, is indescribable. To be a person there who knows, I am blessed and I am blessed, when I am merciful. Also with someone who represents a different opinion. Then of course discuss with him and tell him what my opinion is. So we are in exchange, the other one is not indifferent to me. But I am peacemaking, I argue, I have an attitude without hate. Then I am on the path, on the path of conformation, on the path of my very personal blessing, on the path on which God calls me and us back again and again. Some
Detours, confusions, and complications are possible. He does not hold that against us. But he calls us again and again: blessed are you, you are blessed, and you may be a blessing. That does not cease either, not even in old age. For where a person thinks of others, where they speak good words, live solidarity, and stand for the coming of peace with a clear stance, they are strong in faith. And may God strengthen us for that.

Konfirmationszeit.
