The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them: A Noble Rank and a Faithful Love
Praise be to Allah, who chose for His Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, the best of companions. They believed in him when people denied him, supported him when people abandoned him, emigrated for the sake of Allah, and offered their wealth and their souls, and they carried the light of revelation to the far corners of the earth. So Allah was pleased with them and they were pleased with Him. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. May Allah send prayers and abundant peace upon him, upon his family, and upon his companions. As for what follows:
Fear Allah, O servants of Allah: "O you who have believed, fear Allah and say a word of appropriate justice. He will amend for you your affairs and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has attained a great attainment" [Al-Ahzab: 70-71].
O my brothers: Among the greatest of Allah's blessings upon this Ummah is that He sent Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, among them, and then He chose for him from the Companions men and women who carried his message, preserved his Sunnah, transmitted his Sharia, struggled alongside him, and remained steadfast upon his religion after him, until the light of Islam reached the east and west of the earth. And the love of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, among the people of the Sunnah and the Community is not merely a historical emotion, but rather a religious love, a legal belief, and a loyalty to a generation that Allah chose to accompany the best of His creation, peace and blessings be upon him.
The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, hold a rank that those who came after them cannot equal; for they saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and heard the Quran fresh from his mouth, and witnessed the revelation being sent down, and knew the reasons for its revelation, and were raised in his presence, and prayed behind him, and struggled alongside him, and left their homelands and their wealth in support of his religion. Among them were those who were the first to embrace Islam in the days of weakness, and among them were those who made both emigrations, and among them were those who witnessed Badr, Uhud, the Trench, and the Pledge of Aqabah, and among them were those who spent their wealth in a time of hardship, and among them were those who were martyred in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and among them were those who remained after him carrying knowledge, establishing the religion, and spreading Islam.
And Allah praised the foremost of them with an eternal praise, and He, the Exalted, said: "And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them in goodness - Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will remain forever. That is the great attainment" [At-Tawbah: 100]. And what rank is greater than that Allah informs of His pleasure with them? And what testimony is there after the testimony of the Lord of the Worlds?
And He, the Exalted, said regarding the Muhajireen: "For the poor emigrants whom Allah expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking favor from Allah and [His] pleasure and supporting Allah and His Messenger. Those are the truthful" [Al-Hashr: 8]. Then He praised the Ansar and said: "And [also] those who settled [in Madinah] and [believed] in the faith before them - they love those who emigrated to them and find not in their hearts any want for that which was given them, and they prefer [even] themselves over [their] kin. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his own soul - it is those who are the successful" [Al-Hashr: 9]. Then He, the Exalted, clarified the path of those who came after them, saying: "And those who came after them say, 'Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed, our Lord. Indeed, You are the Most Kind, the Merciful'" [Al-Hashr: 10]. This is the Quranic etiquette: supplication for them, seeking forgiveness for them, and purity of the heart toward them.
And He, the Exalted, said regarding the people of the Pledge of Aqabah: "Allah was satisfied with the believers when they took the pledge of allegiance from you under the tree, so He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down tranquility upon them and rewarded them with a near conquest" [Al-Fath: 18]. It is a testimony to faith and the sincerity of hearts, and a sending down of tranquility, and an announcement of Allah's pleasure with them. And He, the Exalted, said: "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are severe against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking favor from Allah and [His] pleasure" [Al-Fath: 29].
And however much a Muslim after the Companions may reach in knowledge, worship, and righteousness, he cannot reach the virtue of their companionship and their precedence. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The best of people are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them" [1]. And he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do not revile my Companions; for if one of you were to spend the equivalent of Mount Uhud in gold, he would not reach the modd of one of them or even half of it" [2]. So deeds are not measured by their quantity alone, but by what accompanies them of sincerity, faith, and precedence; and they believed when faith was a foreign thing, and they remained steadfast when the trial intensified, and they emigrated and left their homes, and they struggled while souls were few, so they had a precedence that cannot be caught up to and a virtue that cannot be attained.
And how can a Muslim love the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and yet not love his Companions who loved him, supported him, and sacrificed their lives and wealth for him? Among them are Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, the companion of the cave, and Umar al-Faruq, and Uthman Dhu al-Nurayn, and Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Prophet's, peace and blessings be upon him, cousin and son-in-law. Among them are the Mothers of the Believers and his Household, and the Ten Promised Paradise, and the People of Badr, and the People of the Pledge of al-Ridwan, and the Emigrants and the Helpers, and all his Companions, may Allah be pleased with them all. For this reason, it is among the foundations of the People of the Sunnah that they love them, are pleased with them, and guard their tongues from what occurred among them, while believing that they are not infallible, but that they possess a degree of faith, jihad, companionship, precedence, and good deeds that those who came after them do not have. And Abu Zur'ah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "When you see a man belittling any one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then know that he is a heretic, for the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, is a truth with us, and the Quran is a truth, and it is only the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who conveyed this Quran and the Sunnah to us, and they only want to discredit our witnesses in order to invalidate the Book and the Sunnah, and discrediting them is more fitting, and they are heretics." [3]
The Companions are the means through which Allah conveyed to the Ummah His Book and the Sunnah of His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. They heard the Quran from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and memorized it, wrote it down, and transmitted it. They witnessed his prayer, his pilgrimage, his fasting, his dealings, his judgments, and his jihad, and then they conveyed all of that to those who came after them. How great is the right of a people who carried the religion to us and devoted their lives, their wealth, and their blood in the cause of conveying it.
The People of the Sunnah love all the Companions while acknowledging their differences in virtue. The best of this Ummah after its Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is Abu Bakr, then Umar, then Uthman, then Ali, may Allah be pleased with them, and they are the Rightly Guided Caliphs. The Emigrants have the virtue of precedence and migration, the Helpers have the virtue of support and shelter, the People of Badr have their rank, the People of the Pledge of al-Ridwan have their rank, and every Companion has a degree of precedence and companionship that necessitates recognizing his worth.
Among what distinguishes the methodology of the People of the Sunnah is justice and fairness regarding what occurred among some of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, of trials and ijtihad. They do not make those events a door for attacking them, nor a field for pursuing their mistakes, but rather they know that they are not infallible, and that what occurred among them had its causes and its ijtihad, and that the obligation is to preserve their prior virtue and be pleased with them. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, summarized this in his statement in al-'Aqidah al-Wasitiyyah: "Among the foundations of the People of the Sunnah and the Community is the purity of their hearts and tongues toward the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." [4] It is a creed that combines the purity of the heart and the purity of the tongue.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, made love for the Helpers a sign of faith, and he said: "The sign of faith is love for the Helpers, and the sign of hypocrisy is hatred of the Helpers." [5] And he said: "No one loves them except a believer, and no one hates them except a hypocrite." [6] If love for the Helpers holds this rank, then love for the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and honoring their precedence and acknowledging their virtue are among the indicators of the soundness of creed and the sincerity of following.
When we speak about the Companions, we are not speaking merely about men who have passed away, but about a generation that was the cause, after the favor of Allah, of the greatest blessing reaching us: the blessing of Islam. Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, established the Ummah after the death of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and fought the people of apostasy. In the era of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, the state of Islam expanded. Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, united the Muslims upon the Imam's Mushaf. And Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, was among the greatest scholars, judges, and braves of the Companions. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, spread throughout the cities as teachers, judges, and preachers, carrying the Quran and the Sunnah to the people.
The obligation of the Muslim toward them is to know their right, to love them, to be pleased with them, to make du'a for them, to learn their biographies, and to follow their faith, their sincerity, and their sacrifices. When Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, is mentioned, truthfulness and steadfastness are remembered. When Umar is mentioned, justice and strength in truth are remembered. When Uthman is mentioned, modesty and generosity are remembered. When Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, is mentioned, knowledge and bravery are remembered. When the Emigrants are mentioned, sacrifice is remembered. When the Helpers are mentioned, support and selflessness are remembered.
I say this and I seek forgiveness from Allah for myself and for you.
The Second Sermon
Praise be to Allah, and that suffices, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon His chosen Prophet, and upon his Household and his Companions and whoever follows his path. As for what follows:
Indeed, the history of humanity has known many generations, but a generation that was granted to see the Seal of the Prophets, peace and blessings be upon him, to hear the revelation, to strive in jihad under his banner, to pray behind him, to receive the Quran from his mouth, and then to carry his message to the world; such a generation does not repeat. They departed to their Lord and their traces remained, and the Quran they transmitted remained, and the Sunnah they preserved remained, and the knowledge they spread remained, and the stances they recorded remained. So it is their right that their love remains in the hearts of the believers until the Hour.
And if this is the rank of the Companions of Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, then the Mothers of the Believers, may Allah be pleased with them, have above the honor of companionship the honor of being the wives of the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. And Allah has named them mothers to the believers, and He said: "The Prophet has greater claim on the believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers" [Al-Ahzab: 6].
O my beloved ones: And if all this virtue belongs to the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and the Mothers of the Believers, may Allah be pleased with them all, then a group of the Rafidah have gone astray, and a group entered Islam while they were not sincere; they entered with falsehood and slander at times in history, and they conceal enmity toward Islam and the Muslims. So they fell into slandering the Prophet, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and his Companions, may Allah be pleased with them. We ask Allah for pardon and well-being. And the Rafidah have judged the apostasy of many of the righteous Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, exactly as the Jews used to do with their hatred of the righteous and the followers of the Prophets, peace be upon them. And the Rafidah imitated the Jews who slandered Mary, peace be upon her, with fabrication; for the Rafidah have slandered the honor of the Mothers of the Believers, may Allah be pleased with them. And these resembled those in many of the principles, issues, rulings, and judgments, which the scholars have clarified and books and treatises have been written about them. We ask Allah for pardon, well-being, guidance, and the right path.
So O Allah, we bear witness to You that we love Your Prophet Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and we love his wives, the Mothers of the Believers, and his pure household, and his Companions who believed in him and supported him and followed the light that was revealed with him. O Allah, be pleased with Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali, and with the Mothers of the Believers, and with the Emigrants and the Helpers, and with the people of Badr and the Pledge of Pleasure, and with all the Companions of Your Prophet. And purify our hearts from resentment and our tongues from transgression, and gather us with them in Your abode of honor, without being changed or led astray. And may Allah send prayers and peace and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his household and all his Companions.
