The most effective method of religious education is for parents to demonstrate the faith through their own sincere and exemplary conduct, as children respond more strongly to behavior than to words.

The best way to convey Islam to our children is to sincerely live out its beauty ourselves.

The text is a sermon (khutbah) to Muslim parents that addresses their religious responsibility toward their children. It quotes verses from the Quran to underscore the significance of family and upbringing in the faith. The central message is that parents should pass the faith on to their children through their own exemplary conduct, particularly in prayer and fasting. It is emphasized that words without corresponding deeds have no effect on children. The text calls for love, patience, and the communication of clear boundaries. A hadith about the gentle address of the Prophet's family serves as an example of compassionate upbringing. Finally, the power of the parents' prayer (dua) is highlighted, and God's blessing is sought for the descendants.

Honored Muslims! Allah says in the Quran: “O you who believe! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones.” [1] Allah attaches great importance to the family. He calls upon us to respect our parents and honor their rights. Yet He also teaches us that children are a trust. Therefore, parents bear a great responsibility. We should give our children a beautiful name, provide them with permissible food, instill in them good character, and convey their faith to them in such a way that they learn to love Islam. As parents, we have the duty to show our children how to lead a life with which Allah is pleased. The best way to convey Islam to our children is to sincerely live its beauty ourselves. When we explain prayer to them, they should see that we ourselves pray. When we teach them fasting, they should see that we too fast. The Quran states: “Do you enjoin righteousness upon people while you forget yourselves, though you recite the Scripture? Have you then no sense?” [2] This Quranic verse shows us that our words and our actions must align. What we do not live ourselves leaves no impact on the hearts of our children. If we encourage our family to worship Allah, we too must steadfastly and resolutely fulfill our own duties. Children orient themselves more to the behavior of their parents than to their words. Therefore, the best advice we can give them is an exemplary life, made beautiful through faith and worship. Beloved brothers and sisters! Our children need not only friends. They also need loving and merciful parents who show them the right path and convey clear boundaries to them. Therefore, we must teach them our faith, good character, honesty, and sincerity. We must also convey to them a conscious handling of privacy and personal boundaries. In doing so, we should always meet them with love, patience, and wisdom. Enes ibn Malik (r) reports how compassionate our Prophet (s) was in calling his family to prayer: “When the Messenger of Allah (s) went to the morning prayer, for six months he would pass by Fatima’s door and say: ‘On to prayer, O family of the House!’ Then he would recite the verse: ‘O family of the Prophet! Allah intends to remove sin from you and purify you completely.’” [3] Let us all treat our children equally and love them equally. The dua of parents holds great value with Allah. Our Prophet (s) said: “Three duas are undoubtedly accepted: the dua of parents, the dua of a traveler, and the dua of a person who has been wronged.” [4] Therefore, let us accustom ourselves to speaking good words and making sincere duas – even when we are angry. May Allah make us and our descendants Muslims who are an example to others through their words and actions. May He grant us all a life with Iman and with good character. Amen! Geehrte Muslime!
