Sura al-Aʿla contains timeless messages that call people to the recognition of divine transcendence, to the fulfillment of their purpose of creation, and to the preference of the eternal Hereafter over the transient world.

O man! Allah is exalted and Most High, but man is flawed. O man! Recognize the most exalted of all the exalted, your Creator, as free from flaws and errors!

The sermon explains Sura al-Aʿla (Quran 87) as a Meccan sura that the Prophet recited particularly often, and derives from it practical messages for life. It emphasizes the transcendence of Allah, the flawlessness of the Creator in contrast to the fallible human being, and the constant divine observation. The human being is called to do good, to fulfill their purpose of creation, and not to orient themselves toward the transient world. The sermon refers to the duties toward God, in particular prayer, and admonishes to prefer the Hereafter to this world. The messages are presented as timeless and relevant to all people, also in relation to earlier revelations to Abraham and Moses. The sermon concludes with a supplication in which sincerity and protection against forgetting the purpose of creation are requested.

Messages from Surah al-Aʿla for Our Life (13.12.2024) In our Friday sermon today, I would like to address Surah al-Aʿla, which the Messenger of Allah loved very much and took great joy in reciting. He recited¹ this Surah particularly often during the Witr, Friday, and Eid prayers. Believers! Surah al-Aʿla was revealed in Mecca. In the order of revelation, it is in the eighth position. The Surah takes its name from the first verse, in which the exalted Allah is described with the attribute “al-Aʿla.” “Al-Aʿla” means “the Most High.” When this Surah was revealed, our Prophet commanded that in the prostrations (Sujūd) of the prayer, one should say “subhāna rabbiya l-Aʿla,” in order to comply with the command in the first verse, “sabbihisma rabbik al-Aʿla,” which means as much as “Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High!”² This event is one of the most beautiful examples of the Messenger of Allah’s effort to implement the revealed verses in his life. My brothers and sisters! The Quran is a book of life; it was revealed into life and grants life. We should recognize each individual Surah of the Quran as a divine teaching that beautifies our life and implement it in our lives. Surah al-Aʿla contains the following messages for us: O human! Allah is exalted and the Most High, whereas the human is flawed. O human! Recognize the most exalted of all the exalted, your Creator, as free from flaws and errors! Do not forget that you are under divine surveillance. Always strive to do good and useful things! Do not forget that everything in the universe remembers Allah, i.e., flawlessly carries out the tasks assigned to them. You too, remember your Creator, who created you for a purpose, and conduct yourself according to your purpose of creation.³ O human! Allah is the One who creates and shapes from nothing; He sets the measure for all things and is the Guide. Allah is the One who causes greenery to grow and grants life, who brings darkness and causes death.⁴ Allah is the One who teaches and also causes to forget. Allah is the One who knows the manifest and also knows the hidden. Allah is the One who grants ease and also paves the way for well-being.⁵ O human! Heed the recommendations of the exalted Allah, which He has given through the Prophets! Beware of Allah and of His love being lost to you! Give earnest heed to the warnings and do what is required! Do not yearn for the transient world, but for the eternal happiness in the Hereafter! Distance yourself from those who do not wish to be granted eternal happiness. O human! Fulfill your duties towards your Creator; if you wish to attain salvation, perform your prayers and keep your Creator constantly in mind!⁶ Take care not to prioritize this worldly life! Prefer the hereafter to this world, as it is better and more enduring! O human! All these recommendations are particularly important advice for all people in every period. These teachings are also contained in the scriptures revealed to the Prophet Abraham, as well as in the book revealed to the Prophet Moses.⁷ O Allah! Make us such sincere servants of Yours who rise higher through holding fast to it! Do not make us such who fall⁸ because they stay away from the Quran! O Allah! Protect us from any worldly activity that causes us to forget our purpose of creation! Admit us among Your beautiful servants who always act in Your name!
