The knowledge of the uniqueness of God, which encompasses the complete transcendence of God over the body and all attributes of the creatures, is the highest and most paramount knowledge in the religion.
Allâh, the Exalted, placed in this verse the 'command to knowledge of the uniqueness of God' before the command to 'seek forgiveness,' because 'knowledge of the uniqueness of God' belongs to the foundations of the religion and 'seeking forgiveness' belongs to the other fields of knowledge of the religion.
The text is an Islamic sermon that addresses the transcendence of God over the body and over all attributes of the creatures. The speaker states that the knowledge of the uniqueness of God (Tawhid) is the highest and most paramount knowledge. He defines the correct belief in the uniqueness of God as the rejection of similarity with the creatures (Tashbih) and of negation (Tat'il). Several Quranic verses are cited to demonstrate that God is not like anything or anyone. The speaker argues that God is not a body, since a body would have length, width, depth, and composition, which would contradict God. He cites various Islamic scholars, including Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, to demonstrate that attributing a body to God is considered unbelief. The text ends with a prayer for steadfastness in faith.

Praise be to Allâh, the Exalted. We praise Him, seek His support, guidance, and forgiveness. May Allâh protect us from committing sins. He whom Allah has guided will not be led astray, and he whom Allah has led astray will find no guidance. I bear witness that there is no god except Allâh, the One, Who has no partner and to Whom nothing and no one is comparable. And I bear witness that our honored, beloved, and great Prophet Mu h ammad is the servant and messenger of God. He conveyed the message and admonished the community; may Allâh reward him more than all other prophets. O Allâh, grant the Prophet Mu h ammad and his Âl a higher rank, just as You granted the Prophet Ibrâhîm and his Âl a high rank. And grant the Prophet Mu h ammad and his Âl blessings, just as You granted the Prophet Ibrâhîm and his Âl blessings. You are the One Who is described with perfect power and grace, and the One Who has the right to be praised.
Then, servants of God, I urge you and myself to righteousness and the fear of Allâh, the Exalted, as well as to steadfastness in the faith of the prophets and in following the path of the Prophet Mu h ammad ﷺ, who is God’s best creation and our role model. The Imâm A h mad transmitted in his book “ Musnad A h mad ” that the Messenger of God ﷺ said:
The meaning is: By Allâh, I am the most knowledgeable among you regarding Allâh, the Majestic and Exalted, and the most God-fearing among you.
The Prophet praised himself therein because he is the most knowledgeable in this discipline, i.e., in the knowledge of Allâh and His attributes, as it represents the best, highest, obligatory, and most prioritized knowledge. This is indicated by verse 19 of Sûrah Mu h ammad, in which Allâhu Ta^âlâ says:
The meaning is: Know that there is no god except Allâh, and seek forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and women; indeed, Allâh is aware of your movements and your dwellings.
Allâh, the Exalted, placed the “command to knowledge of the Oneness of God” before the “command to seek forgiveness” in this verse, because “knowledge of the Oneness of God” belongs to the foundations of the religion, while “seeking forgiveness” belongs to the other areas of religious knowledge. Therefore, the Imâm Abû H anîfah said: “Know that knowledge of the creed is superior to knowledge of the law.”
Beloved brothers in Islam, knowledge regarding the Oneness of God is of higher rank than other areas of knowledge because it deals with the best knowledge – the knowledge of God and His attributes befitting Him. Belief in the Oneness of God means, for Ahlu s-Sunnah, the rejection of at-Taschbîh and at-Ta^ t îl, as Ibn H adjar al-^As q alâniyy stated in his work “The Explanation of S a h î h al-Bukhâriyy.” At-Taschbîh is the belief that Allâh resembles the created beings, and at-Ta^ t îl means believing in something that would deny the existence of God. Thus, belief in the rationally necessary attributes of God – such as knowledge, omnipotence, and will – together with belief in the transcendence of God above resemblance to the created beings constitutes the true belief in the Oneness of God. This is confirmed in the noble Q ur´ân, as the following verses show:
Allâhu Ta^âlâ says in Sûrah asch-Schûrâ, verse 11:
The meaning is: Nothing is like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
Allâhu Ta^âlâ says in Sûrah al-´Ikhlâ s, verse 4:
The meaning is: Nothing and no one is like Him (God).
Allâhu Ta^âlâ says in Sûrah an-Na h l, Âyah 60:
The meaning is: Allâh is described with perfect attributes that befit Him and that do not resemble the attributes of the created beings.
Allâhu Ta^âlâ says in Sûrah an-Na h l, Âyah 74:
The meaning is: Do not compare Allâh to the created beings.
The aforementioned Âyah 11 from Sûrah asch-Schûrâ is the clearest Âyah in the Q ur´ân regarding the transcendence of God above any resemblance to the created beings. For from the first part of this Âyah, the perfect transcendence above the attributes of the created beings is to be understood, because it means that Allâh does not resemble the created beings in any way. This thus means that Allâh is transcendent above all that does not befit Him, such as incapacity, ignorance, limits, measures, color, body parts, form, image, appearance, and composition. In the second part of the Âyah, attributes that befit Allâh are affirmed, for hearing and seeing are attributes that befit Allâh. Allâh preferred in this Âyah the affirmation of His transcendence so that no one would imagine that the hearing and seeing of God would be like the hearing and seeing of others. Allâh sees without being dependent on light and eye, and hears without being dependent on ear or other aids. Indeed, Allâh resembles nothing and no one, for Allâh is not a body and thus does not resemble bodies.
Brothers in Islam, there is consensus in the community that Allâh is transcendent above a “body,” and this was affirmed by the scholars of the honorable Ahlu s-Salaf (the Muslims of the first three centuries after the Migration). Among these scholars is Imâm A h mad Ibn H anbal, to whose school of jurisprudence the al-Mudjassimah (those who believe that Allâh would be a body) falsely claim affiliation. Imâm A h mad responded to the claim that Allâh would be a body and said: “The names were taken from the religion and the language. The linguists designated this name – the body – for that which has length, width, depth, composition, appearance, and arrangement, yet Allâh is perfectly transcendent above all of this. Furthermore, it has not been transmitted in the religion that Allâh would be described as a ‘body,’ so it is forbidden to describe Allâh as a ‘body.’” This was transmitted from him by Abu l-Fa d l at-Tamîmiyy al-Baghdâdiyy, the greatest of the scholars of the Hanbali school of jurisprudence in his time. Thus, Imâm al-Bayha q iyy also transmitted this from Imâm A h mad in his work “Manâ q ib A h mad.”
Brothers in Islam, the words of Imam Ahmad generally mean that names were known both through language and through religion. Examples of names known through language are “man” and “horse.” An example of a name known through religion is the lawful “prayer.” The “body” is, according to language, that which has length, width, depth, composition, appearance, and arrangement, and Allah is not described with any of these. Otherwise, He would resemble His creations, which would contradict the Ayah with the meaning “Allah resembles nothing and no one.” Furthermore, if Allah were a body and thus had length, width, depth, composition, appearance, and arrangement, He would depend on someone who would determine for Him this length, width, depth, composition, appearance, and arrangement; however, by reason, the one who is depended upon cannot be God. Thus, it is impossible—both religiously and rationally—that Allah be described as a “body.” Moreover, it has not been transmitted in the religion that this name, i.e., body, is to be used in reference to Allah, and the Islamic rule, as mentioned by the Imam of Ahlu s-Sunnah, Abu l-Hasan al-Asyari, and other scholars, states: “It is forbidden to call Allah by a name that has not been confirmed in Islam as a name of God.” Therefore, it is forbidden to describe Allah as a body. It was even transmitted that Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal declared a non-Muslim anyone who says that Allah is a body, even if he claims that He is a body that does not resemble other bodies.
This statement of Imam Ahmad corresponds to the statements of the scholars of the other schools of jurisprudence, for Imam as-Suyuti confirmed in his book al-Asbah wan-Nazair that Imam ash-Shafi’i declared a non-Muslim anyone who claims that Allah is a body. In the book al-Minhaj al-Qawim by the scholar Ibn Hajar al-Haytami, it was even transmitted: “Al-Qarafi and others said that Imam ash-Shafi’i, Imam Malik, Imam Ahmad, and Imam Abu Hanifa declared a non-Muslim anyone who attributes a body or a direction to Allah.”
This means that the scholars declare a non-Muslim anyone who calls Allah, the Exalted, a body or attributes to Him the limitation to a direction, since all of this applies to the creations. Imam Abu Ja’far at-Tahawi, who is among the scholars of Ahlu s-Salaf, said in his work on faith, in which he mentioned that this is the clarification of the faith of Ahlu s-Sunnah: “Whoever describes Allah with a single attribute of the creations is not a Muslim.”
The body, the appearance, and the form, all these attributes belong to the attributes of the creations. Thus, the person who describes Allah with any of these attributes is definitely not a Muslim.
Furthermore, Imam Abu l-Hasan al-Asyari said in his work al-Nawadir: “Whoever believes that Allah is a body has no knowledge of his Creator and does not belong to the Muslims.”
O Allah, for the honor of the Prophets and Messengers, the Awliya and the righteous, of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, of Imam ash-Shafi’i, of Imam Malik, and of Imam Abu Hanifa, of al-Awza’i, and all practicing scholars, keep us steadfast upon their faith and make us among those who spread this faith and respond to those who have deviated from it, O You the Merciful.
This is it, and I ask Allah for forgiveness for myself and for you.
The second sermon:
Praise be to Allâh, the Exalted. We praise Him, seek His support, guidance, and forgiveness. May Allâh protect us from committing sins. He whom God guides will not be led astray, and he whom God leads astray will find no guidance. A s - S alâtu was-Salâmu upon the Prophet Mu h ammad and upon all other prophets.
Then, O servants of God, I urge you and myself to righteousness and to the fear of Allâh, the Exalted and Almighty.
And know that Allâh called you to something important. He has called you to utter A s - S alâtu was-Salâmu upon the Prophet.
Allâh, the Exalted, says in Sûrah al-´A hz âb, Âyah 56:
O Allâh, grant the Prophet Mu h ammad and his Âl a higher rank, just as You granted the Prophet Ibrâhîm and his Âl a high rank. And grant the Prophet Mu h ammad and his Âl blessings, just as You granted the Prophet Ibrâhîm and his Âl blessings. You are the One described with perfect power and grace, and the One who has the right to be praised. Allâh, the Exalted, says in the holy Q ur´ân :
The meaning is: O mankind, be among the righteous. Indeed, on the Day of Judgment, tremendous events will occur. On that day, every nursing mother will forget what she is nursing, every pregnant woman will deliver her burden, and you will see the people in a state of intoxication, yet they are not intoxicated, but rather the punishment of God is severe.
O Allâh, we ask You to fulfill our supplication, to forgive our sins and mistakes, to make us among the guided and not among those who have gone astray. O Allâh, we ask You to remove our worries and sorrows from us and to protect us from what we fear.
O servants of God, Allâh calls for justice, good conduct, and the maintenance of kinship ties, and He forbids indecencies, evil, and injustice. This is an admonition so that you may reflect. Fulfill the duties and refrain from sins, seek God's forgiveness and trust in God, be righteous, and He will remove your worries and distress from you. A q imi s - S alâh ! (Call the I q âmah)

A q imi s - S alâh !
