Because God gives generously and without preconditions, the congregation should invest gratefully and abundantly in God's kingdom and in fellow human beings, in order to be blessed themselves and to bless others.
God loves to give. I think that's the kind of slogan under which a Harvest Thanksgiving can stand. That's what we experience at Harvest Thanksgiving. God really does love to give. And he gives generously.
The sermon text for Harvest Thanksgiving at the FeG Dresden emphasizes that God gives generously and without preconditions, regardless of sin, origin, or stage of faith. The preacher derives from this that the congregation too should invest abundantly in God's kingdom and in fellow human beings. He quotes 2 Corinthians 9 and Ecclesiastes to underpin the principle of "sow much – reap much." Specific figures on involvement in the congregation are mentioned to honor the commitment and to invite further workers. The text calls for joyful giving, not only with money, but also with time, love, and engagement. It connects Harvest Thanksgiving with the desire to be a blessing for Dresden and beyond. The message is encouraging and celebratory, without reproach or warning.

Welcome to the sermon of FGG Dresden. We wish you a fruitful time. You can find more information about our congregation at dresden.fg.de. I am always delighted when we can celebrate Harvest Thanksgiving. Simply because it shows us what a loving God we have. God loves to give. I think that is the slogan under which such a Harvest Thanksgiving can stand. That is what we experience at Harvest Thanksgiving. God truly loves to give. And He gives generously. And we can see here in front of us a great deal of what God has given again this year. We have a generous and willing-giving God. And what excites me most about God in His giving is that God simply does it. Regardless of whether we are adults or youth or children, whether we are men or women, regardless of whether we have a migration background or no migration background, or if we do, which one, God does not care. God does not ask beforehand and go around looking to see who among you has sinned a lot in the last quarter and who has sinned little, and then I will let it fall on the Altar... He does not do that either. He does not even look at how we stand toward Him, whether we believe in Him or do not believe in Him. But God is someone who simply gives generously, who provides for us year after year. Independent of all other prerequisites. God’s Word tells us that God truly lets His sun rise over every person. That He gives rain on every field. Completely independent of whom it belongs to. And therefore, I personally believe that we truly have, if we look at what is here in front of us, all of us together, regardless of how we stand toward God and how things have been for us in the last few days, we simply have a huge reason to thank God. Because we can work as much as we want. If nothing grows in the field, all the money is of no use to us. Coins are not particularly comforting. You can suck on coins for a longer time, but halves do not really do it either. Or do they? How good it is that God loves to give and gives so generously. And therefore, a first thought on this: because God is so generous and loves to invest so much, it is worth it that we too actually invest a lot in this world. At least, God’s Word holds this view. The Apostle Paul, he was also someone who followed Jesus from the heart in his time. And he wrote the following, you can read it in 2 Corinthians 9, starting from verse 6, think about it. A farmer who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly. But he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. And the principle has been known for a long time, even long before Paul wrote it down at that time. The King Solomon, who lived approximately in the 10th century before Christ, writes: One scatters abroad, yet increases the more; another withholds unduly, but it tends to poverty. I mean, that is somehow logical, maybe you are allotment gardeners or maybe not. In any case, it is clear that if you say at the beginning of the year, I will only plant three rows of potatoes, then you save a little compared to if you would decide to plant five rows of potatoes. But at the end of the year, when it comes to harvesting, then you can of course only harvest the crop from three rows of potatoes and not think that suddenly there would be the harvest from five rows of potatoes. How is that possible? That is logical. He who sows sparingly cannot reap abundantly. If you therefore want to experience that you will be richly blessed in your life, there is actually only one way you can experience that, namely by investing richly. Everything else cannot work in the end. And I am very grateful to be allowed to live in this congregation, where many are very willing and invest a lot in the Kingdom of God. I will take that over from
agriculture in the area of the congregation. There are many who truly love to invest here in the Kingdom of God and thereby also in their fellow human beings. I once asked Karin, I said, find me a few numbers. And she did it, as devoted and dedicated as she is. And I had already done this a few years ago, and there were, I believe, 220 or 230 workers. In the meantime, there are 448 different workers in our congregation who are partly double and sometimes even more engaged, so that they together perform about 1,000 services here every year and that in about 70 different congregation areas. And I have not yet counted the music school. We could add that on top and then the whole thing looks different again. And what makes me so happy is also, when you look again, what does the congregation stand for or how does the congregation reach people, what is their core business, I will simply say, then we actually have 324 people who are committed to the fact that we may celebrate worship here week by week. And we have additionally another 58 people who are committed in parallel to the fact that the children can also celebrate children's worship. And we have every weekend, it is a special one, of course it also goes on all week, but 74 people who are engaged in ongoing youth work. And we have 78 workers who are active in 45 house groups. Want to hear a few more numbers? I brought a few more, a bit to underline. And so, for example, in the Church Tools topic on the homepage, 13 people take care of IT. Two take care of the room organization, one has to imagine, so many rooms that two have to take care of them. In the area, 27 people are always actively involved. Decoration, five people, 15 in pastoral care, 27 in mentoring, 31 in the café area, five in property management, eleven in prayer for the hearing impaired, six in mission and partner work, two who make the posters and flyers, six people who accompany the climbing meet, two the women's meet, nine who take photos and 16 who make the prayer list. House and yard and house make the congregation list. By the way, the next couple may be missing, you are welcome to get involved again as in all our areas. We are always happy about new workers. In house and yard, nine people invest. In our theater group 7, in fundraising 5, in sustainability 7, we have a bomb sustainability weekend this weekend, which is very well received. Great thing, thank you also for that. In the fundraising team, as said, five people, in Connect 9, so where one can dock, and in the Spätlese, so the, I will simply say, the older generation, there nine people are engaged. And if you now feel like clapping for all those, you can do that. I have a few more numbers. And these are numbers that on the one hand make me happy and on the other hand make me think again, challenge me. In total, 176 persons perform one service. 116 persons perform two services. 72 persons perform three services. But there are also 47 persons who perform four services and 37 who take on five or even more services. 364 of 448 people perform 1 to 3 tasks. I believe that is really fundamentally healthy and can be done well. But there are also 84 people who perform 4 or more tasks. And they do it gladly and voluntarily, I know that. But I think, well, if a few more would pitch in, this would perhaps be a bit easier. Maybe you are here in the congregation and think, wow, such a big congregation, so many people, they surely have no shortage of workers anywhere. I may proclaim to you this morning, I personally do not know a single area where we would not gladly have more workers. So from that
Feel free to feel addressed and invited, and become part of this, and I say this with the deepest conviction, of this great and overwhelming team that is working here. I am so proud of every single person we have here in the congregation who is pitching in. And let us simply continue to drive this good work forward, to keep moving it ahead. And I will say a little bit today about why and for what purpose. I find it great that you, as staff members, are so committed to the cause of our Lord Jesus and to this congregation. And for me, it is anything but taken for granted. It is truly great. Invest yourselves within a congregation that gladly and abundantly invests in the Kingdom of God and in this world. And because God so abundantly blesses our service, that is why we all in this congregation can also benefit so greatly from it. And it is my wish that Jesus will make us more and more of a blessing to our city district and to our city each year. And gladly also beyond that. I keep receiving feedback from all over the country, and Frank too, who, as an evangelist, travels around even more, receives even more of that. And we notice that we can simply encourage others through our service. And that is so, so beautiful and only possible because you are so deeply involved. In part, we also actively plan to become a blessing to others. I will say something later about the church announcement, which we are currently intensifying. That is our wish and passion, to express our thanksgiving to God by investing in His Kingdom and in other people, so that they may experience Jesus. Not only hear about him, but truly experience him as well. God gives gladly, therefore we may also gladly and generously invest. And that is my second thought at this point, because God gives gladly, we can also give gratefully. I will read on from 2 Corinthians, chapter 9, verse 7. Each of you must decide for yourself how much you wish to give. Give not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And when giving, think not only of money, but also of time, of love, of prayer, of commitment. For God loves the person who gives gladly, or we could also translate, who gives cheerfully. He will generously supply you with all that you need. You will have what you need. And you will even have something left over that you can share with others. In Scripture it says, He has scattered abroad and has given to the poor. His righteousness endures forever. For it is God who gives the farmer seed for sowing and bread for food. Likewise, He will give you many opportunities to do good. And your generosity or also your righteousness will bear much fruit. You will receive, so that you may give all the more generously. And when we bring your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God from the heart. Paul emphasizes once again that God is so generous and gives gladly. And precisely for that reason, we too may be generous and give gladly. And in doing so, we may know that God has all the means necessary to provide for us. And this year’s harvest, which we were again able to reap, underscores that. If things sometimes get financially tight for us, then I sometimes think, perhaps it is also, that can have all sorts of reasons. I do not want to say now that this or that reason is it, but I personally always also consider whether perhaps there is a message from Jesus behind it. Does Jesus want to say something to you personally through this? Does He want to say something to us as a congregation about it? Or does He perhaps also want to say something to us as a society, if we think about the whole thing on a larger scale? The congregational context is in the background of the biblical text here. How did it come about? The congregation in Jerusalem, that
intended, after Jesus had ascended into heaven and said that he would soon return, they thought, okay, we will still experience that. How do we use the time until Jesus' return in a meaningful way? And you said, if Jesus is coming back soon, why don't we use this time to worship him and tell others about him? And one by one, they gave up their jobs to invest exactly in that. And whenever a little money was missing or something like that, someone would sell a field or his hut or whatever, and the money was distributed among the congregation. The problem I raised at some point was that eventually everything had been sold, but Jesus was still not there. And now the question was, okay, what do we do? And the congregation in Jerusalem, Paulus reacted in such a way that he said, okay, we have to change the system. Paulus says later on as well, people, you have to start working again. But until then, until that is running again, we will simply supply you with the money you need until then from the other congregations. Why? We have learned about Jesus through you, so we want you to survive now and feel the love of Jesus. That is our passion, that is our love. And that is what Paulus writes to the congregations at that point, where he says, people, let's pool our resources and let us generously provide for our brothers and sisters in Jerusalem. So Paulus collected money in all the congregations until the Jerusalem congregation was financially back on its feet. And Paulus encourages the congregation. I like to call this the 3F, the 3F-band donations. The first F stands for voluntary. Verse 7 again. Each of you must decide for himself how much he wishes to give, for you give not reluctantly or under compulsion. The Jews once came to Jesus and said, hey, Jesus, how does that look? We belong to God, the fullness of God, do we as Jews have to pay taxes to the emperor? That is always annoying, right? But Jesus then says, no, friends, don't think you can get around it, give to the emperor what belongs to the emperor. Because you do get a little something from it. In the optimal case, infrastructure, health system, and so on. You get a little something from it? Or on the other hand, always give to God what belongs to God as well. And Jesus says that as a Jew to Jews. And that means, the Jews were such that they already knew from the Old Testament, 10% of our income we give to God and we give to people in need. That was their basic attitude. And to such people Jesus says that. And therefore I assume that when Jesus says, give to God what belongs to God, that Jesus also thought of those 10% of income that God already expected from his people in Israel at that time. But Jesus apparently did not really understand that in such a slavish way himself, but truly as a voluntary gift. And this becomes clear in a conversation between him and Peter. Even though the conversation was not directly about giving, it did have to do with the temple tax that was also levied in Israel at that time. And Jesus asked Peter, Matthew 17 you can read about that, what do you think, Peter, from whom do earthly kings demand taxes and duties, from their own children or from other people? Peter replied, from the others, to which Jesus said, then the children are free. But we do not want to offend them. Go down to the lake and cast out a fishing line, the first fish you catch, open its mouth. You will find a coin in it, take this coin and pay the tax for both of us with it. I have been puzzling to this day why Jesus takes that path, I just find it funny, but they do it that way. They just do it. So he goes fishing, pulls a thaler out of the fish's throat and they give it as
Temple tax. As Christians, we are children of God and therefore free. Free from our guilt, free for heaven, free for the work of the Holy Spirit in us, provided for by our heavenly Father, who gives generously. And thus we are redeemed, we are set free, we are provided for. And thus I am also free enough to be bold, to invest generously in God and in His kingdom. 10% of income has proven itself, is a good and proven value, but personally, if you ask me, I think we in Germany, we are so well off financially. There it is beyond the butcher, who always asks, and can it be a little more? Yes, I think so, with us in Germany, yes, definitely. As well as we are positioned here. But we should not give our money out of compulsion, not because Uli thinks it could be a little more, but voluntarily as an expression of your thanks to the Father in heaven and to His Son Jesus. That must be a statement from you to them. That is important to me, that is God’s Word important, that is important to Jesus, that is important to the Father in heaven. That is the first F, voluntary. The second F stands for freely giving, because God gives abundantly and gladly, Paulus follows in our passage verse 11, you will receive, so that you can give all the more generously. And interestingly, already in the Old Testament in Malachi 3, God emphasizes that we may even test Him with the offering of the tithe. And that is really truly remarkable, it is the only place where God encourages us to challenge Him in His blessing actions. And because that is the only one and because it is really such a rare passage, I am happy to read it to you, Malachi 3 verse 10, bring the full tithe of your harvest into the storehouse, so that there is enough food in my temple. Test me thereby, says the Almighty Lord, whether I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour out on you countless blessings. I find this mixture of our trust in the Father in heaven and His warm-hearted and generous nature, from which He gladly gives, that also puts us in a position to gladly and generously give, by being freely and generously giving. Do we reflect the nature of our heavenly Father in my eyes. And therefore one of the culture sentences here in this congregation is, we are generous, we deal generously with each other, not in matters of sin, but otherwise, we are generous. And the third F, that stands for joyful. Verse 7, each of you must decide for himself how much he wants to give, for you do not give reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves the person who gives joyfully, who gladly gives. Someone from the congregation told me one day, I have always had trouble with money or we as a family have always had trouble with money. And then I came to the congregation, I became a Christian and it was said that we could give 10% for the work of God. And then we started doing that, although every month money is missing for us. And what shall I say? Since we have been doing that, we give away 10% every month, but somehow it suddenly suffices. Now I do not want to say that it always turns out that way. But God tells you that if you do that, if you engage in it, He will open heaven and bless you in many ways. And some experience it also in financial terms. And perhaps these are still thoughts where you say, this is all a bit foreign to me. Hey, I have always thought, if I give 10 euros for something, it already hurts, I am not used to that at all. I can understand that well, we are not used to that. So not, if you did not grow up somewhere in the From Orbit, then you had it already in the mother’s milk, already on the bottle 10% for a Lord and so. You have that right away, so that is clear, there
Do you know that. But if you did not grow up there, it was certainly different. And therefore, perhaps a tip from me on how you can approach it. You can say, in the first month, what do we have now? Early October, you say, look, the money is still there. Today is only the 4th, there will still be some left, I assume in your case. I will now take 10% of what I had and put it under the pillow or in the garage, or as a spare tire, or into a separate savings account, wherever you put it. And you see whether you really needed it by the end of the month. If you forget about it, those who later buy your garage will be happy. But if you do not forget, you could then say at the end of the month, I did not need it, new money is coming, I give it to the Lord. And in the next month, you try it with 2%. And so one can approach it. And you can have experiences with God. Tangibly. Is that not beautiful? So that would be my tip. And a final thought on the whole matter. Whoever gives gladly, multiplies joy and thanksgiving. If you voluntarily, generously, and joyfully invest in God’s riches, then you will do so because you are so grateful to Jesus and to the Father in heaven. For the daily provision that we celebrate today. For his forgiveness, because he has forgiven you your guilt. For the fact that he goes through everyday life with you, day by day, at your side. Bringing you again and again to good thoughts, to wise decisions. For his c

Oli will Jesus dir was persönlich dadurch sagen? Will er uns was als Gemeinde dazu sagen? Bisschen was habt ihr davon? Aber
