The God-bearer Mary occupies a unique position in Orthodox theology: she is the highest created person after God, who shares with God by essence and not only by activity, and whose person grounds the mystery of the divine economy.
God shares himself with his creatures by activity. Only with the Lady the God-bearer did he share himself by essence, which made her the cherubic throne.
The text presents the person of the God-bearer Mary from an Orthodox theological perspective and relies primarily on quotations from the saint Gregory Palamas as well as on other Church Fathers such as John of Damascus, Nikodimos the Hymnographer, John Chrysostom, Symeon the New Theologian, and Andrew of Crete. The central claim is that Mary is the highest created person after God, who stands immediately after the Trinity and occupies a unique position in the history of salvation. The text links her person with Trinitarian and Christological dogma, in particular with the Incarnation of Christ, who gave her his human flesh and for that the Holy Spirit. Numerous Old Testament types such as the tongs, the burning bush, and the dove's brood are interpreted as prefigurations of Mary. Her ascetic way of life, her humility, her prophetic charisma, and her unceasing spiritual activity are presented as models. The Dormition and Assumption of Mary are described as a mystery that transcends the human intellect. The text is addressed to the Orthodox community and serves theological instruction and devotion.

Theotokos – The God after God
Theotokos
11.10.2026
Sabbas Alexandrou, Theologian
Saint Gregory Palamas, emphasizing the greatness and importance of the person of the Lady Theotokos, declares: “She, therefore, is God after God, possessing the second place of the Trinity, receiving immediately the fullness of all the gifts from God.” Immediately after the Triadic God, for us Orthodox, is the person of the Lady Theotokos, who, according to Saint Gregory, “was deemed worthy of the entire charisms of the Holy Spirit.” Beyond this, according again to Saint Gregory, she was the first to be deemed worthy to see the Risen Christ. He further emphasizes: “For the Gospel of the Resurrection of the Lord, first of all men, as was fitting and just, the Theotokos received from the Lord, that she, first of all men, saw the Risen One and partook of His Divine speech.”
Her entire life, according to Saint Gregory Palamas, was an ascetic and striving life for the salvation of the world. He states regarding this: “The All-Holy displayed an ascetic and extremely striving life for the salvation of the world.” For precisely this reason, according to this preeminent Father of the East, “she is the holy reverence of the entire creation and the saving medicine of our race.”
Countless events of the Old Testament clearly prefigured the person of our All-Holy One. Thus, for example, according to Saint Gregory, the tongs used by the angel Seraphim, as recorded in the book of the Prophet Isaiah, clearly prefigured the Lady Theotokos who would conceive within herself, without being burned, the fire of the divinity. “Who does not know that the tongs were like the Virgin who conceived in herself the divine fire.” The same applies to the burning bush spoken of in the book of Exodus. Also, the young doves offered as a sacrifice for the dedication of males, as recorded in Leviticus, also prefigured the Lady Theotokos. “The young doves, being without marriage, clearly pre-announced the Virgin and the One Begotten from her.” Furthermore, this very Father of the East, analyzing theologically the name of the Virgin, notes that the name Mary is interpreted as Lady. Therefore, our All-Holy One is Lady, because she dominates all beings and because she is the source and root of our spiritual freedom. “The name of the Virgin Mary is this, and it is interpreted as Lady. The Virgin is Lady, by right, as dominating all and as the source and root of our freedom.”
The Saint clearly states that the Lady Theotokos had the prophetic charisma, as seen in the Gospel according to Luke. She prophesied that all generations of men would bless her throughout the ages; “For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed.” The Saint again emphasizes her prophetic charisma: “That the Virgin, having the prophetic charisma, is presented to the willing one by the hymn of hers to God in the Gospel.”
A terrifying person, therefore, in the theological sense, is the Lady Theotokos. She was a model of nepsis and had her mind constantly given to the unceasing noetic prayer, while simultaneously experiencing the God-pleasing hesychia. “The Virgin finds the Holy Hesychia as her guide. Hesychia, the stillness of the mind and the world. She conceived the forgetfulness of all things and the mystery of the things above, uniting the mind with the turning toward herself and the divine unceasing noetic prayer.” Furthermore, according to Saint Gregory and certainly in accordance with all the Fathers of the Church, “God communes with His creatures by energy. Only with the Lady Theotokos did He commune by hypostasis, a fact which made her a cherubic throne.” Therefore, the theophoric Fathers maintain that there are three types of veneration: to God, latria; to the saints, dulia; and to the Lady Theotokos, hyperdulia.
Saint Nektarios of the Holy Mountain, in turn, from his own perspective, will inform us how her person and her entire activity are connected with the Trinitarian dogma. Thus, according to the Saint, our Panagia received from God the Father power, from God the Word wisdom, in order to know, to reconcile heaven with earth, and from the Holy Spirit the good cheerfulness.
According to the God-bearing Fathers, the Lady Theotokos does not merely intercede with God for us, but also saves, in reference to the Christological dogma. Saint Nektarios of the Holy Mountain, justifying this position, notes: “Christ is an eternal debtor to the Theotokos, because He borrowed from Her something that He never returned, His human flesh.” Furthermore, the Saint, emphasizing her greatness and holiness, informs us: “If the nine orders of the Angels were to be cast down from the heavens and become demons, if all men were to become evil, if all the created things: heaven, luminaries, priests, animals, were to rebel against God, all the evils of the created things, compared with the fullness of the holiness of the Theotokos, would not be able to grieve God. Only the Lady Theotokos would be able to please Him in everything.”
Moreover, according to Saint John of Damascus, as certainly and in accordance with all the Fathers of the Church, her person is connected with the plan of the Divine economy for the salvation of men. The holy Father emphasizes: “Rightly and truly we call you, Holy Mary, Theotokos, for this name constitutes the mystery of the economy.” Astonished before her greatness, the holy Father will emphasize how no one can praise her exactly as she deserves. The Saint writes: “No one of the men will be able to praise the Theotokos according to her worth, nor if ten thousand tongues were to gather would they reach the due praises, for all things surpass her beyond the bounds of praises.”
Moreover, the Holy Augustine, extolling her greatness, states: “These three things, despite His omnipotence, God could not have made more perfect. The Incarnation of the Word, the glory of the righteous, and the greatness of the Lady Theotokos.”
Furthermore, it is worth emphasizing that Saint John Chrysostom, also one who was astonished before her greatness, in a superb discourse titled “Discourse to the Holy Virgin,” states: “Nothing in the world is like the Theotokos Mary. Examine, O man, the whole creation with your reason and see if there is anything equal to or greater than the holy Theotokos Virgin. Turn over the whole earth, observe the sea, examine the air carefully, investigate with your mind the heavens, think of all the invisible powers and see if there is another such wonder in the whole creation. There is not.”
This very Father of Orthodoxy, extolling the virtue of humility that adorned the Lady Theotokos, states: “For the Virgin is wondrous, and Luke shows the virtue of this, saying that she did not immediately exalt herself, as she heard the greeting of the Archangel, nor did she accept what was said.” She was not overcome by joy nor by pride, when she heard the encomiastic words of the Archangel towards her, but she heard them as if they were for someone else. So great was her humility.
Moreover, Saint Symeon the New Theologian, full of wonder towards her person and emphasizing that with the birth of Christ she became the cause of the spiritual rebirth of men, observes: “In the Paradise, from a man a woman became the mother of all those born from the earth, but in the Church of the faithful, from a woman, a man, Christ the God, was born, the beginning of all those being spiritually reborn.”
The same one again, in another connection, states how Christ took from her His human flesh, but offered her the grace of the Holy Spirit. The holy Father says about this: “The God Word received flesh from the Theotokos and gave in return the Holy Spirit and vivified with it her surpassingly pure soul, raising it from death.”
Moreover, from his own perspective, Saint Andrew of Crete will emphasize that during her time in the Temple of Solomon, she was constantly praying for the salvation of the world, and from her prostrations, the floor made depressions. “In this Zion, the inclinations of the holy knees of the Most Holy Body, the slabs laid upon the ground retain the impression.” Indeed, according to Saint Gregory Palamas, during her stay in the Temple of Solomon, angels nourished her. “She remained there for many years in the sanctuary, where secret provision of food was given through the care of angels.” Finally, her Dormition constitutes for the God-bearing Fathers a mystery that the human mind cannot comprehend.
With this reasoning, the venerable Damascene inquires: “Oh, how is the source of life led to life through death?” Therefore, our All-Holy One is a fearsome figure, since even death, when it saw her, was afraid. The venerable Father says again: “How could corruption dare to approach the life-giving body? Death, looking upon this, has been afraid.” Moreover, Saint Gregory Palamas, emphasizing how great her Dormition is from a soteriological perspective, states: “If the death of this righteous one is precious in the sight of the Lord, how much more so that of the Holy of the Saints, through whom sanctification became for all the saints.”
Speaking of the fact of her Dormition, as well as her translation, Saint Gregory Palamas mentions: “Christ, rendering the departing honor to His Mother, placed her spirit in His hands, and soon after, her united body is transferred to the heavens.” Thus, through her translation, the Lady Theotokos dwells in the heavens, because, according to the Theology of Saint Gregory Palamas, they are the dwelling place that befits her and her kingdom. “Now, having the heavens as a fitting dwelling place, as a kingdom befitting her.” Her Dormition is not connected with sorrow but with joy, because in the heavens she constantly cares for our salvation. Thus, the faithful people of the Lord, on the occasion of her Dormition, kneeling, pray to her: “Most Holy Theotokos, save us.”
