Mary is God's whole creation in person, and the human being, as the crown of creation, is willed by God and gifted with the vocation to heal and preserve creation.

Together we believe: Mary is God's holy and whole creation in person. In Mary, whom he preserved from original sin, God prepared the way to the healing and sanctification of the whole creation.

The text is a sermon for the feast of the Nativity of Mary in Altötting on the occasion of the crowning of a copy of a Marian image. It explains that the feast opens the liturgical year in the Eastern Church and that a Marian orientation of the liturgical year is visible there, while the West is structured christologically. September 1 as the ecumenical Day of Creation is interpreted as the octave day of the Nativity of Mary, thereby setting creation and Mary in relation to one another. Mary is presented as the new Eve and as the whole creation in person, who prepares the way to the healing of creation. The text refers to Pope Francis's encyclical 'Laudato si' and the introduction of the Day of Creation in the Roman Catholic Church. It criticizes voices that describe the human being as a misfortune for creation and instead emphasizes the dignity of the human being as the crown of creation. The sermon concludes with a plea to rediscover the greatness of being human and to be worthy of the vocation as the crown of creation.

09.09.2026 260908_Altoetting-Predigt-Kroenung-Madonna.docx 1 The Nativity of Mary – The Whole Creation in Person Sermon in the Chapel of Grace in Altötting on the occasion of the crowning of the newly dressed copy of the Madonna of Altötting September 8, 2026, The Nativity of Mary Reading: Rom 8,28–30 Gospel: Mt 1,1–16.18–23 Dear sisters and brothers in the Lord here in the Chapel of Grace and wherever you are tuned in to us via K-TV! Birthdays in the Liturgical Year That we in the Church liturgically celebrate a birthday is not a matter of course. Actually, we only celebrate one birth feast in the liturgical year: Christmas as the birth feast of our Lord Jesus Christ; the two other birth feasts are assigned to him; the feast of the Forerunner and Baptist John half a year earlier, on June 24; and today, on September 8 – exactly nine months after December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception (Immaculata Conceptio) – the feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God. Because Mary, with regard to the redemptive act of her Son, was freed from original guilt from the first moment of her existence, the day of her birth is also without any shadow or blemish. We thank God for her election. And to the Mother of God we give thanks for her word of yes and for her maternal care for the Church. Marian Imprint of the Eastern Church’s Liturgical Year The celebration of the Nativity of Mary particularly unites us also with the Eastern Church. And I would like to take this feast day as an occasion to point to 09.09.2026 260908_Altoetting-Predigt-Kroenung-Madonna.docx 2 a more recent development in ecumenism with the Eastern Church, in which our feast day today plays a central role. One must know this: In the Western Church, we structure the liturgical year, so to speak, christologically. We celebrate the “Year of the Lord.” Beginning on the First Sunday of Advent with the expectation of the coming of the Messiah, it leads through Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost to the Second Coming of Christ and concludes with the Feast of Christ the King. Our sisters and brothers in Orthodoxy think, pray, and celebrate from Mary. The liturgical year is oriented marianly there. It begins with the feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God Mary on September 8, and ends with the feast of the Dormition of Mary – that is, the glorification of the Mother of God in heavenly glory – celebrated in the East as in the West on August 15. The two liturgical year structures do not stand in opposition or contradiction to each other, but rather complement each other, as I find. The Latin Church of the West structures from the divine Redeemer, the Eastern Church from the redeemed and God-praising creation, for which Mary is the archetype. The Day of Creation and the Nativity of Mary as an Octave In addition, in the Eastern Church, September 1 has already for some time been elevated to the Day of Creation by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Creation, as the stage of salvation history, precedes salvation history. Also for this reason, it is not accidental that we are presented with the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew as the Gospel today, and this is the beginning of the New Testament altogether. The deep rooting of Jesus in the Old Testament salvation history is to be shown. In the genealogy of Luke (3,23–38), Jesus is then traced back to Adam. 09.09.2026 260908_Altoetting-Predigt-Kroenung-Madonna.docx 3 This Day of Creation, observed on September 1, makes the feast of the Nativity of Mary, in a sense, the octave day of the Day of Creation and thereby explicitly relates creation and Mary to each other. Together we believe: Mary is God’s holy and whole creation in person. In Mary, whom he has preserved from original guilt, God has prepared the way for the healing and sanctification of the whole creation. Mary – the New Eve and the Healed Creation Mary is the new Eve. While the old Eve was created without blemish – Adam and Eve were created in holiness and justice, that is, in harmony with God – she, through the misuse of her freedom, desiring to be like God herself and to determine for herself what is good and evil, placed herself – together with Adam – and all of humanity under the calamity of original sin. Mary, the new Eve, who, with regard to the redemptive act of her Son, is “conceived without the stain of original guilt,” will give birth to Jesus, the “new Adam.” In the unity of divinity and humanity, he withstands the temptation of the old Adam, atones for the guilt, overcomes it, and reconciles us with God. With Jesus and Mary, God makes a new beginning in order to heal the creation wounded in Adam and Eve. Against this background, Pope Francis, in his encyclical “Laudato si’” and in ecumenical communion with the Eastern Church, introduced September 1st also in our Roman Catholic Church as “Creation Day,” and the days from September 1st to October 4th, the memorial of Saint Francis of Assisi, stand under the special sign of care for the preservation of creation. September 1st is a well-chosen date for Creation Day. It makes clear that the Church’s introduction of Creation Day is not about a political measure or perhaps even about the baptism of a party program. Rather, this liturgical expression of care for the “Common Home of Creation” fits into the overall understanding of creation and redemption. Under the patronage of Mary, the person of the healed and healing creation, we sharpen our awareness for a responsible handling of the creation entrusted to us by God, which we should pass on to future generations as intact as possible. Creation responsibility includes not only a frugal use of energy sources, the sister water, and the mother earth, but also the ecology of the human person: a culture of life, the care for the protection of life in its particularly vulnerable phases – before birth as well as in illness, frailty, and old age. The Coronation and the Dignity of the Human Person as the Crown of Creation We are gathered today in Altötting to crown an image of the Mother of God, to crown her because she is our heavenly Queen. The crown may certainly remind us all that we, as human beings, are conceived by God as the crown of creation. In the human spirit, creation comes to itself; creation recognizes its Creator. Through our mouth, the entire creation praises its Lord! In Mary, we behold perfected humanity as the crown of creation. The human person, the crown of creation! I know that this sounds like mockery in some ears. A widespread weariness of the human person with itself is prevalent. There are voices that designate the human person as the great misfortune for creation and even believe that by renouncing offspring, one does a favor to creation. But in my eyes, this is ingratitude, indeed pure despair. The gaze upon the Mother of God, the gaze upon the crowned Mother of God, may give us courage: It is something magnificent to be human. Magnifica humanitas – the magnificent humanity – with these words, Pope Leo opens his first encyclical. The human person is not a soulless calculating machine, but a creature of God, gifted with a heart capable of love. We are created to recognize God, to praise him; through us, creation praises its Creator, we may participate in his creation and share the love received, and, like Mary, bring Jesus into the world. Holy Mother of God, pray for us that we may not despair of ourselves, but rediscover the greatness and beauty of being human, and prove ourselves worthy of the vocation to be the crown of creation, Amen.
