The unshakeable defense of the Orthodox faith against state persecution, as exemplified by Theophanes the Confessor, is a binding model that today likewise admits no compromise in matters of faith.
Both he and the other great Fathers of our Church are (must be) for us today as well the great living examples of making not a single concession or retreat in matters of faith, just as they did!
The text recounts the life of Saint Theophanes the Confessor, an Orthodox monk and hymnographer who in the 8th and 9th centuries during the Iconoclasm stood for the veneration of icons. He was tortured, exiled, and finally branded on the forehead with a red-hot iron by the iconoclast emperors Leo V and Theophilos, which earned him the epithet 'the Confessor.' After the death of Theophilos and the restoration of the icons by Empress Theodora in 842, he was consecrated as Metropolitan of Nicaea. The text emphasizes his ascetic way of life, his hymnographic activity, and his unshakeable fidelity to the Orthodox faith. The core message is that Theophanes is a living model for the present-day Orthodoxy, which must make no concession in matters of faith. The text combines historical narrative with an explicit address to the faithful in the present.

Saint Theophanes the Confessor: The great confessor of our Orthodoxy
Hagiography - Figures
11.10.2026
Lambros Skontzos, Theologian
One of the most heroic periods of our ecclesiastical history is also the period of the Iconoclasm (726-842), during which a multitude of confessors of the Orthodox Faith were revealed. They defended the Orthodoxy with vigor, setting up their resistance against the persecutors of the Holy Icons, who, having the imperial power, persecuted with fury the confessors of the Orthodoxy.
One of these was Saint Theophanes, the so-called the Written. He was born in Palestine in 745. His father was the pious Ioannas, who took care to transmit, both to him and to his brother Theodore, the piety. He also took care to educate them, sending them to the famous Monastery of Saint Sabbas, near the wise teacher Elder Michael, to study the sacred science of Theology, as well as ancient Greek, grammar, poetry, music, etc.
The two brothers showed particular interest and diligence in their studies and were also initiated into the Orthodox spirituality and the monastic ascetic spirit. Their teacher Michael in 811 took them with him, as his subordinates, to the Monastery of the Spoudaioi, near the church of the Resurrection. Then Patriarch Thomas ordained them priests and sent them as ambassadors to Constantinople and to Rome, in order to support the persecuted Orthodox by their persecuting iconoclasts, but also to seek support against the threats and persecutions that the Arab Muslims were exercising against the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. They settled in the famous Monastery of Chora.
But, a little later, in 815 the emperor Michael I Rangabe (811-813) died and Leo V the Armenian (813-820) ascended to the throne, who inaugurated the second period of the iconoclastic controversy. He ordered the complete prohibition of the veneration and honor of the Holy Icons, even with the penalty of death, the destruction of all the Icons and the whitewashing of the wall paintings of the churches. Then the two brothers, Theophanes and Theodore, together with their teacher Michael, appeared before the impious emperor and rebuked him for his decree. Leo, not only did not show signs of repentance, but ordered their savage torture. They were savagely flogged and locked in prison. After they rejected even the efforts of the future iconoclast Patriarch John the Grammarian, to comply with the imperial decree, they were separated. They locked the two brothers in a fortress in the Bosphorus, depriving them even of food.
After the murder of Leo (820), the persecutions of the Orthodox ceased, and the two brothers settled at the Holy Monastery of the Archangel Michael of Sosthenios in the Bosphorus, who, through their exemplary ascetic struggle and their many letters, strengthened the Orthodox faith. But in 829, the equally fanatical iconoclast emperor Theophilos (829–842) ascended the throne, who inaugurated a new fierce iconoclast period, ruthlessly pursuing the confessing Orthodox. The two brothers were exiled to the island of Afsia in 834, together with other Orthodox confessors. Because they did not submit, and they exercised fierce criticism against the iconoclasts and the Palace, they were summoned in 836 to a new inquisition by the emperor. The two confessing monks again boldly and frankly rebuked the impious emperor, confessing the Orthodox faith. They were again subjected to new tortures. With a red-hot iron, twelve iambic verses were written on their foreheads, with the cause of their persecutions. For this reason, they were called from then on the "Inscribed" (Graphotai). Subsequently, they were thrown into the dampest and darkest prison of the Praetorium, with the aim that they would die in isolation. Then they received comforting letters from their teacher Michael and the saint Methodios, encouraging them to endure the martyrdoms to the end. In a short time, they were sent to a new exile in Apamea of Bithynia (Moudania), where, however, they were enthusiastically received by the people. Theodore fell asleep in 838, exhausted by the hardships. His brother Theophanes, defying the emperor's order that his body remain unburied, buried it, composing also a magnificent poetic canon.
After this bold act of his, Theophanes was exiled to Thessaloniki, where he worked actively for the triumph of the Orthodox Dogma and the rejection of the heresy of iconoclasm. But in 842, the impious Theophilos died, and his underage son Michael III (842–867) ascended the throne, over whom the pious empress saint Theodora presided as regent, who immediately ceased the persecutions, reinstated the decisions of the Seventh Ecumenical Council (787), and in 842 definitively restored the holy Icons. In parallel, she also recalled from exile and released from prison the confessors of the faith. Theophanes was recalled from exile, and the Patriarch saint Methodios in 842 ordained him Metropolitan of Nicaea. There he spent the remainder of his turbulent earthly life, shepherding his flock in a godly manner, praying and practicing asceticism. As a consummate poet and hymnographer, he composed a multitude of ecclesiastical hymns, which are sung to this day during the Lord's and Theotokos's feasts and in the commemorations of saints. He fell asleep peacefully on October 11, 845. He was proclaimed a saint, and his venerable memory is celebrated on the day of his peaceful falling asleep.
Saint Theophanes the Inscribed is counted among the great Fathers, Confessors, and hymnographers of our Church, who dedicated his entire life to the confession and defense of the Orthodox faith, the only true and saving faith. Both he and the other great Fathers of our Church are (must be) for us today the great living examples, not to make the slightest concession or retreat on matters of faith, as they did!
