Christian identity is grounded in the unconditional love of the perfect God for imperfect people, a love that transcends human logic and was made visible on the cross of Jesus.
The preacher Jan Luca Künzl uses the story of the penguin as an analogy for things that do not stand up to human logic, in order to introduce the incomprehensibility of divine love. He defines God's love as 'impudent,' that is, going beyond the measure, and presents it as the core of Christianity: the perfect God loves imperfect people. Using the example of 1 John 4:9-10, the cross of Jesus is presented as the ultimate proof of this unconditional love and atonement. The text encourages the listeners not only to understand this love intellectually, but to experience it personally and to trust in it, even in moments of doubt. It is emphasized that Jesus is a person whom one should get to know, and not merely a means to salvation. The sermon closes with the invitation to celebrate the Eucharist as a daily remembrance of this love.

Good morning once more from my side. It is such a privilege for me to be here today, to be allowed to preach, not only because it is my father’s congregation, but because I truly believe that Jesus loves each one of you so much and that Jesus really wants to speak to us today. And because I know that my strength alone is by no means sufficient, I would like to pray with us at the beginning. Jesus, I thank you that you are here. Jesus, I ask you to use me today to proclaim your Word. Lord, I ask you, meet us. Holy Spirit, I ask that you truly open our hearts and that your love goes out into our hearts. Thank you, Jesus, for knowing us so well and knowing exactly what we need today. Lord, give us what we need today. And bless this sermon, bless the next few minutes, and let us get to know you more deeply today. Amen. I would like to start my sermon with a small question to my family, who is here. It is also an honor for me that you are here today as well. And the question, loudly: What was my favorite animal when I was a little child? Exactly, the penguin. And I have brought a small picture of a penguin, and I do not know how much you have thought about penguins in your life. I guess not quite so much, unless they happen to be your favorite animals as well. But if you look at this penguin, you will notice that it is a bird. So it has wings, it has feathers, even if it looks like fur, it has a beak, it lays eggs. So it is a bird, but as you can see, the bird does not fly. A penguin cannot fly, although it is a bird, but it actually lives most of the time on land. But if you look at it more closely now, you see, it does not even have knees. So in running, it is really not particularly gifted either, but you can really watch a massive amount of videos on the internet of penguins constantly falling on their faces, because they trip over such small ice chunks or something like that. So it is a bird that cannot fly and it lives most of the time on land, but it also cannot really run well, that is really actually pitiful. But there is one thing that penguins can do really well, better than all other animals, I would claim. And that is diving. And unfortunately I did not bring a picture of a penguin diving, but you can believe me, penguins dive incredibly well. They are more agile than any other animal, faster than any other animal and truly incredibly flexible and simply impressive when they are in the water. And what I actually want to say with this whole story is that sometimes God simply does not make sense to me. I think to myself, why so complicated? So why a bird that lives on land but is actually created for water? Why so complicated? And I simply do not understand God in that point, why he made the penguin the way he made it. But I see that it works. I see that a penguin is still happy, even if it often falls on its face. And are you now afraid that I am preaching about penguins? No fear. I will not preach about penguins, but the only point I wanted to make just now was, there are things that we cannot understand. The penguin is a funny example, but there are also things that really occupy us. Things that we would really like to understand. Yes, why is one person healed and the other person not? Why do I lose? Why did I lose my job? Why does this or that happen? There are simply things that are somehow inexplicable for us. And then there are also things that we cannot understand either, but which we still cling to, which we can hold on to and which give us a
unshakable support in life. And one of these truths is that God loves you. God loves you. And I believe that we cannot truly grasp God’s love, cannot truly understand it, just as I cannot understand why God made the Pinkweens the way He made them. Can I understand how deep His love for me is. The only thing I can do is to trust Him completely. In 1 John 4 verse 8 it says, God is love. And just as little as I can explain to God how I can grasp God, can I explain love, can I grasp love. For if God defines love, then love is so much and infinitely greater than I could ever understand, than my logic could grasp. If we ask ourselves what love is, we must therefore look to God. We must ask ourselves, what is God like? But it seems the most natural thing for God to love, at least it tells us that this is so. But what does this love look like exactly? What does that mean exactly? God loves me. And my sermon today is getting louder and louder, about outrageous love. I believe, Daniela and Paul Gerhard, you have given more thought to the word itself than I have. But I have also done my homework and have consulted my Duden. And it also means something like beyond measure, beyond limits. And God’s love truly goes beyond our logic, beyond our understanding, beyond what seems somehow logical to us. I know, have you ever tried to define love? But I come very sharply to my limits there. In fact, the research of “God loves us” is crazy. How does God come up with the idea of loving us humans? He doesn’t need us humans at all. I once saw a debate between a Christian and several non-Christians. And one of the non-Christians asked the question, how can the perfect one feel affection for the imperfect? And in other words, how can the almighty God, who created heaven and earth, who is so happy in Himself, content in Himself, who does not need humans at all, who is perfect in all His works, who is highly exalted above every power. Why does He feel affection for us imperfect, unjust, sinful humans? And when I heard this question in that debate, I thought to myself, yes, that is the core of being a Christian. That is what it is about. That is the good news. That is the gospel. That is the message we believe in, that the perfect God loves imperfect humans. Is that not the best news you can possibly hear today? Should not this news set us in absolute joy every time we hear it? Should we not every time we hear it, really stand up and jump and dance, simply because God is so good? But perhaps it is like for you as for me, and I do not feel like jumping for joy and making praise every time, or not always. But there are also moments where I ask myself, God, where are You actually right now? What are You doing right now? I need You so much right now, God, I need Your love. Perhaps you also do not feel God’s love right now. Perhaps you think to yourself, God, where are You? What are You doing? Have you ever had such thoughts? Perhaps I am the only one. But perhaps you are also like me, raised in a Christian household, and you have heard the sentence a thousand times, Jesus loves you, Jesus feels you, Jesus is with you, Jesus is always there, and so on. But what does this sentence mean at all? What does it mean that Jesus loves me? What is love at all? All these
Questions are so deeply in my heart, and in some way I had to find an answer to this question. We use the word love for very different things. I can say to a person, I love you, and in the next moment I say, dear you, steak, or pancakes, or whatever else. It is the same word we use, but it means completely different things. Our idea of what love is is also additionally shaped by our society, that Hollywood perhaps calls love, but which is somehow much more only physical attraction. And that differs significantly from what we say, what we mean when we say, Jesus loves you. What is God's love comparable to? If we cannot define it, then perhaps we can compare it with something. Is God's love comparable to a father who loves his child, or like a mother who loves her child? Is it like the love between two lovers, or like the love between friends? Is it like the love one has for a needy person on the street? Does God actually love me because he likes me, or does he love me simply because he has to? I want to invite you; today, in my presence, we will truly open your heart to God's love. I have absolutely no intention of presenting an abstract theology of God's love, and my goal is also not that you go home today having understood love, but my goal is, whether you have been a Christian for 50 years or do not yet know Jesus at all, that you encounter the Person, the Love in Person, today. I recently heard a song that said, Lord, do not let me forget that you are a Person and not just my plan to get into heaven. Jesus is a Person, God is a Person. He is not just our plan to get into heaven. We are not just here to get into heaven. We are here to get to know the Person Jesus Christ. And if it says God's love, then we may allow ourselves to be filled by his love this morning. My goal today is that when you go home, you know that you are created to be loved by God and to live in his love. To get there, I have brought three points today. Normally, I believe you always get seven points from my dad, but today you only get three from me. And the first point is: the perfect loves the imperfect. If you have your Bible with you, you are welcome to open it with me. First John, four. But we will also have the texts on the wall. We read from 1 John four. And God's love for us was made visible in that God sent his only Son into the world to give us life through him. This is the foundation of love. Not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a propitiation for our sins. Hallelujah. God defines love through his Son. In Jesus, the perfect, entire being of God is reflected. Everything Jesus did corresponded to the heart of God. If Jesus healed a person, he did so because it corresponds to the nature of God, because God loved the person, and because God wanted to see the person healed. If Jesus told a person that he forgave their sins, he did so because God wanted to forgive the person their sins. But the greatest proof of God's love he gave us by his Son Jesus Christ dying on the cross for us, for our sins, to thereby grant us true life. And one way to repeatedly reflect on what Jesus did for us on the cross is to celebrate the Lord's Supper. I want to tell you about an encounter with God that I once had; for several weeks, I celebrated the Lord's Supper alone for myself every day. And every day I reminded myself of what God did for me
has done. And I was just sitting in my room, thinking about what Jesus has done for me. I thought about how he was made to wear the crown of thorns. I thought about how he was scourged. I thought about the blows he received. And so on. And while I was thinking about how he was scourged, I imagined him simply standing before me. And I realized, in a way, that each of his wounds is screaming my name. How his wounds are gladly screaming, Luca, you are to blame. You are to blame for me having to do this. And I had such an intense feeling of guilt, such a profound realization of my own guilt, like never before. And I was in my room and started to weep bitterly, because I simply could not cope with my own guilt. And I believe that many Christians reach this point. Or even if you are not yet a Christian, and simply do not yet know Jesus. That you reach this point and think, oh man, I owe my life. I am guilty. And I believe that we often then draw the conclusion that if God has given his life for us, we owe God something. That we must give God something back for what he has done for us. That makes a lot of sense, too. My German brain is so conditioned to action, reaction. It makes so much sense. I am holy and pure and do really great things and God loves me. But then I have a bad day and maybe do things that God does not like, and God does not love me. It makes a lot of sense to me that God's love is somehow dependent on what I do. But that is not how God's love is; rather, his love is unconditional. His love is not dependent on what I do. And perhaps you also sometimes have the feeling that you must prove something to God. That you must do something so that God loves you and somehow so that God is happy with you. But that is truly an extremely sad gospel. Although gospel means good news. It is a joyful message. But I believe that we, including myself, often actually believe a very sad gospel. Imagine you are on the street and preaching this gospel to people and saying, hey, you know what, you just have to try hard enough and then God will love you. Or, hey, did you know, you owe God your life. Who wants to hear such a message? So, we should really not be surprised if we preach that, that then no one will listen to our message. That is not the good news, but a very sad news. And I am simply being honest with you, I grew up with the gospel. But nevertheless, that is sometimes what I feel in my heart. And in a way, it is true that God wants us to give him our whole life. But it does not start with our performance, but it starts with his love. That is why it is also written here in the text, that is the foundation of love. Not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a propitiation for our sins. God did not love you only after you had done many great things. God did not start to love you only in the moment you gave him your life. But even before you knew God, even before you were even born, even before you could do anything, God already loved you. Even before you could do anything for him, God had already decided to do this, to die for you, to go to the cross for you. And the God who loves you incredibly. And this word propitiation is somehow an old word, with which one can perhaps no longer quite do much nowadays. But propitiation means that
who dies for the other, to atone for or pay for his guilt. And in this case, the righteous dies for the unrighteous, the perfect Stüpfel for the imperfect. Where does that make sense? What is the logic behind it? I said I wanted to study physics. That means, inside me is this drive for logic. And I think to myself, God, why do you do such a thing? Why are you so crazy? Why do you do that? And I was recently visiting my best friend, who had his first child a few weeks ago. And a baby can really do nothing. But it is truly so needy. And it was screaming all the time. First it is hungry, then it needs to go to the toilet, then it is frustrated because it is tired but somehow cannot sleep. And sometimes it gives the impression that it is just screaming to scream. No idea. In any case, it was mega exhausting for my best friend and his wife. And yet she does it ultra gladly, because she simply gets to experience this little baby-ness. The two of them give so much time, also so much money, having a baby is also really expensive somewhere. They give so many nerves, because they simply love this little person so much. They are willing to give everything for him, although he has not done anything for them yet, nothing at all. And that is something wonderful. I believe that this love that parents have for their children is something very special. And I believe that we are also often before God like these little needy babies, who are loved so infinitely by their heavenly Father. But it is also the case that my friend does not think, now I take care of my baby and invest a lot of time and money in this baby, so that it can work for me later, so that it can give me something back later. So what for parents? But my friend gives himself for this baby, for a purpose, to have a relationship with this baby someday, so that this child grows up someday and when it is big, has a nice life, a beautiful life, and so that a loving relationship arises between the two. A relationship that is based on love, not on performance, that this child starts to work. Have you understood this point? This is really so incredibly important to me. God does not want us to go through life with a constant feeling of guilt, that we are always thinking, we owe God something. God is not satisfied with you only when you start doing something for him. God simply wants the relationship with you. He wants us to be filled with his love. This does not mean that God does not care how you act, but he did not give himself for us so that we work a lot, but for relationship. And my story with the Lord's Supper is fortunately not finished yet. Because when I was crying like that and thinking about how guilty I feel, a crazy love filled me at some point. I realized so much how God says to me, I did it gladly, I did it for you. And I started crying again, but this time not out of guilt, but simply because I was overwhelmed by this love. Because I did not understand this love that God has for me. It is so outrageous, so undeserved. And I know one thing, God longs so much for you, God is crazy about you. Only because of that was he willing to do something so crazy, like going to the cross for us. His love is really crazy. Jesus loves you. This is so important to me, that we understand that. Jesus loves us. Full stop, done. Then you cannot send. Jesus loves you. On your best day as on your worst day. Whether you currently feel ultra holy, ultra pure, or whether you feel totally guilty, Jesus loves you. Regardless of whether you have been a Christian for 50 years, or do not know God at all yet, Jesus loves you. He loves you on none of your
days more or less. His love for you is completely independent of what you do. It is solely his outrageous love and grace that saves us, not our effort. I do not know what you do with yourself when you hear this, but I also notice how it challenges my thinking. How it is so contrary to what I think would be logical. Can this really be true? Is God really that good? Is His grace really that good? Is His love really that outrageous? Do I not have to perform a little, do a little something? That would somehow satisfy my inner sense of justice, at least a little. And Paul says in Ephesians 2:8-9, once again, by God’s grace you have been saved, and that through faith. You do not owe your salvation to yourselves, no, it is God’s gift. It is not based on human works, so that no one can boast before God. Phew, that is hard stuff. I can do nothing, absolutely nothing, to earn my salvation. Absolutely nothing, it is an absolute gift, Jesus’ work on the cross. The perfect proof of God’s love will be enough forever. God will not share His honor with you. None of us will stand before God at the end and be able to boast about anything. We will not be able to stand there and say, “Here, God, look at all I have done for you and all the good I have done,” but we will stand before God and say, “Thank you, thank you that you have saved me. Thank you for your work on the cross, Jesus. To You be all the glory and all the praise forever and ever.” God’s gift of grace should lead us to seek God, to throw ourselves into His loving arms. That is what God wants, that we have fellowship with Him. To worship Him and not to hide in ourselves and become proud of our achievements. It is so outrageous, we have done nothing. Even before we were born, Jesus had already chosen us. So we have certainty: the perfect loves the imperfect, and it was solely His work on the cross, not our achievements, that saved us. Okay, are you ready for the next point? The second point is outrageous without shame. In one word, “outrageous” also contains the word “shame.” This means that we no longer need to have shame. This point is also particularly important to me. It means first John 4:17. If this is the case with us, if we allow ourselves to be determined by God’s love, then love has renewed us from the ground up. Then we will be able to look forward to the day of judgment with full confidence. For even though we still live in this world, we are connected to the Father as Christ is. That is all for now. But what did we just read? Even though we still live in this world, we are connected to the Father as Christ is. How is Christ connected to the Father? What was the relationship between Jesus and the Father like? What does John say here when he says, just as Christ was connected to the Father, so are we connected to the Father? He says, the

Warum so kompliziert? Was bedeutet das denn jetzt genau? Gott liebt mich. Was machst du gerade? Vielleicht denkst du dir, Gott, wo bist du? Was machst du? Was ist Liebe überhaupt? Alles, was Jesus tat, entsprach dem Herzen Gottes. Warum bist du so verrückt? Also was für Eltern? Jesus liebt uns. Punkt aus, fertig. Dann kannst du nicht sendern. Jesus liebt dich.
