Steadfast faith and active care within the community are the means by which one can stand firm in times of persecution and uncertainty and hope for the coming redemption.
The sermon deals with the third chapter of the First Epistle to the Thessalonians and the situation of the early Christians in Thessalonica, who suffered under persecution. Paul, who had to flee the city, worried about the faith of the congregation and sent Timothy to strengthen them. The text emphasizes that faith can prove itself regardless of external circumstances or difficulties. A central point is the personal engagement and the 'ownership' of the congregation for individual believers, who should not be left alone. The sermon encourages the listeners that a difficult start in faith is no sign of being on the wrong path. It appeals to actively stand up for others through prayer and practical help, even when there is resistance. The hope for the return of Christ and the new creation serves as the framework for persevering in the present.

We are in the third sermon of a series on developing a firm faith. We come from an introduction that Joschi gave two weeks ago, stating that the church in Thessalonica, which would be called Thessaloniki today, had made a good start with God. And they came to faith in the first generation. At that time, Christianity did not yet exist. They were a pioneer congregation, a pioneer church. We are people from very different faith backgrounds who have been made acquainted with the good news, and we have acknowledged Jesus as our personal Savior and Lord, and we have embarked on the journey of faith to follow him, and we have learned that he is not only the Son of God, but also came to earth, that he died on the cross as a substitute for all humanity, and that everyone who accepts this in faith may also have eternal life, and that Jesus has also risen from the dead, called by the Father into new life, and is now at the right hand of the Father, which is a term for sitting on the throne and ruling, yes? Sitting on the throne in heaven and already directing the affairs of the earth, aiming at the point that he will one day return, and everyone will realize that now this whole matter will be made right and set right, and there will be a new creation and a new earth with renewed people, and you and I may already be renewed here and then live toward this eternity, he will return, and they were under pressure from the very beginning, yes? And last time we dealt with what the good news of Jesus is, which they had understood, and you are welcome to listen again if you missed the last sermon, it is about what the gospel actually is, or what we believe, and we were the first Christians to deal with this, and today we go into the third chapter of the First Epistle to the Thessalonians, and there is the major context: Paul and his team of workers could not stay in Thessalonica, because right at the beginning they had a rough start, one might say, yes? They started explaining this to these people, who also came to faith, and suddenly a community, a small church, came together, but people noticed, some of them misunderstood things, for example, that Paul had something against the emperor, which he did not, he only said that above the emperor there is another one, yes? And that is Jesus, yes? And there was murmuring, because people actually reoriented themselves, left old gods and old practices behind, and practiced new faith, and not everyone understood the vocabulary, the world of thoughts, there is, for example, among the first Christians a misunderstanding that somehow blood rituals were being celebrated, yes? Because in the Lord's Supper, which we will also celebrate later, we speak of the blood of Jesus that we drink, but it is about symbols, that Jesus died for us, yes? In any case, they had a really hard time. And Paul and St. John had to leave. And if you now look at the map, yes, I tried Google Maps yesterday or the day before, yes? So Christianity started in Israel, you can see it very clearly, yes? Here is Jerusalem, so my finger is Jerusalem, just so you know. And the first Christians, yes, and Paul, who was such a forerunner, they practically traveled hundreds, thousands of kilometers, to the metropolises and to the cities, and tried to convince people that Jesus is indeed this Lord, and that God makes an offer to every person to become part of his kingdom, which he will one day fully display. And they came to Greece, and at the very top, yes, where the blue dotted line ends, that is Thessalonica. Here is Athens and here is Corinth,
Greece. And now we zoom in again, next image, yes, you can now see the blue line a bit more sharply zoomed in. Up there is this small community. Paul has to flee, he goes to Berea, that is there, where this corner ends, and then they travel down again to Athens. And there they sit, and that is 350 kilometers on foot or by ship, we do not know exactly how they traveled. That means, Paul continues to work, but he suffers from something, namely, that he does not know how the Thessalonians are doing and that they suffer from persecution. That means, they have just started to believe and already the problems begin. Perhaps you are someone who also feels this way, you are not alone. It may be that when people make this decision, which we make because Jesus has shown himself to us or we have accepted him, however you call it, and you reorient yourself, that people initially cannot categorize this and that it becomes difficult or that challenging things happen that you cannot even associate with it. And that is already the first piece of information in the sermon at all. How it starts is not so important. It can be difficult or it can be easy. Our faith is initially independent of that. We do not need to read signs. If it is hard, then we are on a good path, and if it is easy, then we are on a wrong path, and if it is easy, then on a right one. Rather, faith can prove itself, regardless of the circumstances and regardless of how people treat us and regardless of how good or bad it feels right now. That is what we first learn from the Thessalonians. But Mr. Paul, he has a heart for the Thessalonians and he suffers from the fact that he does not know how they are doing and whether they are holding on to the faith or whether they will fall away or whether they will fall apart or whatever else. Now we read chapter three of the First Letter to the Thessalonians. But I will also read 3 verses, 4 verses beforehand, from verse 17 of the second chapter. You are welcome to read along in your Bible, so that we get a bit of the context. But I am reading from the New Life Translation and if you simply want to listen, that is also fine. He writes to the Thessalonians and has just received news about how they are doing. Dear friends, we were separated from you for a while, but only spatially, for with our hearts we were always with you. But because we longed so much to see you again, we tried so hard to come to you. We would so much have liked to come and I, Paul, also tried again and again, but Satan did not allow it. For are you not our hope and joy and our pride, when Jesus our Lord returns and we will stand before him? Yes, you are our honor and joy. When we could no longer bear it, he and his team, we decided that I should stay alone in Athens. Down the curve to Athens, there they sit. And we sent Timothy to you. He is our fellow worker for God and our brother in the spreading of the good news of Christ. We sent him to you to strengthen you and encourage you in the faith and to protect you from becoming uncertain through the difficulties you had to go through, but you of course knew that we would face such obstacles. Even when we were still with you, we warned you that difficulties would soon come and so it happened, as you know here. Therefore, when I could no longer bear it, to find out whether your faith had remained strong or whether the tempter had overcome you and whether our effort had perhaps been in vain. Now it is already a little too late, but I have already in faith that I could no longer bear it, that I could no longer bear it, that I could no longer bear it, that I could no longer
he helped, but I had already been in vain. Now Timothy has just returned with the joyful news that your faith and love are still just as strong. He told us how much you look back on our visit with pleasure and that you long for a meeting just as much as we do. They could have also said, stay away from us. When you came, he started trouble. In our struggles and difficulties, it has greatly comforted us, dear friends, that you have remained steadfast in the faith. Through your holding on to the faith, we are strengthened. How can we possibly thank God enough for you? You give us so much reason to come before God with great joy. Day and night we pray for you and ask God for a meeting, so that we may complete what may still be lacking in your faith. We wish that God our Father and Jesus our Lord would prepare the way to you. And we ask the Lord that your love for one another and for all people may grow, so that it becomes as great as our love for you. Through this, you will be inwardly strong, complete, and stand holy before God when Jesus our Lord comes again with all those who belong to him. Amen. He has prayed, did you notice? In the letter, there are also three written prayers by Paul. So this is both a letter and, it shows how he feels inwardly and what moves him, and he writes part of it in the form of prayer or writes what he prays. And what we pray shows what is in us. We can definitely see now, wow, this guy really has ownership, one could say. So the people are totally important to him. And that is also a take-away that we can take with us. Accompanying people in faith or helping them into faith is also something personal. And you cannot do that on the side. And you cannot delegate that to the pastor either. Yes, I cannot personally pray for all people and fight for them, but we as a church, yes, we have ownership for the people around us. Yes, and we also want to accompany people. We do not want to leave people alone in their struggles of faith. Yes, we stick with it. And we pray and we do the best we can. And that is exactly what Paul does too. Yes, so he does not know how they are doing. The first thing is, I must know how they are doing, otherwise I cannot help them. Yes, and then he really sets all levers in motion to do something. Very practically. He tried to go himself, as we heard, but somehow the doors were closed. He says, Satan did something so that he could not travel. I do not know if he became ill or missed a ship, no idea. Yes, and that means, it is a huge effort. Yes, and he is not impressed by things not working either. I do not know how often we say, okay, that did not work, that was not supposed to be, be it, when we stand up for people or in our own lives and then bump into the fact that there is resistance. And then maybe not try again. Paul is quite different. He says, I will try as long as it works. And if that does not work, I will do something else. And I pray like a world champion. Yes, I do what I can, and I pray like a world champion. And I do not give up. We have a value that we have, passion. Passion is not satisfied with it does not work. And that is why passion is also something that makes us creative and lets us try new paths. And Paul then tries such a new path by saying, okay, if I cannot come, maybe it was also that he knew a death sentence was pending for him in Thessalonica and therefore he cannot go. And then I will just send Timothy. One from the team goes, who accepts the 350 km up and the 350 km down. He looks at how things are going. He encourages them and strengthens them. And
Then we can see what we do, because he has ownership. And he negotiates that with God and does what is possible. I find such a basic life attitude cool in itself. You can really take a leaf out of their book, or two, or three. But here we also learn something about our faith and how faith can truly become steadfast, how it can become solid. And we can learn something from the Thessalonians, but also from how Paul proceeds here to strengthen faith. And that is why we are now going to do a small investigation, also regarding faith. The word occurs very often in that chapter. Perhaps you can show me my Bible again. This time we are looking at the red things. It is always about faith, faith, faith, faith, faith. A few other instances of faith occur in the letter. But now we are taking the lens of faith, having firm faith. And what makes us waver in faith, and this can help us to develop firm faith. Last time it was the gospel, today it is about faith. Therefore, my sermon, which has been running for a while, but I have already touched on the topic, is called "Steadfast: How good handling of pressure makes your faith firmer and more solid." How good handling of pressure makes your faith firmer and more solid. In the two letters, the word faith is often used. I am giving you a small summary now, because otherwise you might miss it at the end. In the third chapter, verse 5, it says that faith can have different states. For Paul wants to know the state of faith among the Thessalonians. Already a take-away, right? Faith can be incomplete or worthy of development. For Paul wants to complete what is still lacking in their faith. Do you have that? So you can have a really good faith, a good relationship with Jesus, and everything is okay. And still, there can be things that I do not yet know, that I have not yet grasped, and in another situation, if I do not have the information, that could potentially make me waver. Therefore, it is good to continue developing it. Number three, one can, or must, strengthen faith. For that is what Paul wants to do with the Thessalonians. This shows that our faith, we cannot manage alone with just our faith, but we also need others who help us, and we must be careful that it does not become weak. Number four, one can lose faith. For Paul wanted to know whether the tempter had tempted them and whether his work had been in vain. I hope to speak about this verse later, but it is about whether they have gone off the rails, out of faith, or not. That means, it is actually possible that one loses one's faith. Faith can grow. For Paul observes growth among the Thessalonians. In the second letter, I may also speak about it. Perseverance and faith seem to be interconnected. For they are mentioned in the same breath, in Second Thessalonians 1:4, and faith must be persevered in until the end. For Paul prays that God may complete the work of faith. Also in the first letter, first chapter, second verse. Why did I say that now? I simply gave a short summary about faith in the two letters. We notice something, namely, that faith is not a fixed quantity, but has different states. That means, faith is not static, we know what static is, fixed, unchangeable. It must be further developed. The covenant with God, or the covenant from God to us, that is static. That is fixed. That means, if you have started with Jesus, if you have given him your life, if you have said, I want to live under your rule and I claim your sacrifice for myself and also receive new life as a gift, that covenant from God to you, that does not change. Is that clear? But our state, how strongly we
To live, how much we embrace it, how much we waver or how certain we are, that can fluctuate. And do you know why? Because we are human beings. And therefore Paul struggles with the fact that he wants to strengthen his people, to whom God has spoken for a year, and for him there is no question and he receives it too, but that he wants to strengthen them so much that they do not let him go and then do not jump out. Faith is not static; it must and may continue to develop. Read verses 1 to 3 again, this time from the Elberfelder translation. Therefore, since we could no longer bear it, we decided to remain alone in Athens, and we sent Timothy, our brother and fellow worker of God in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and comfort you in your faith, so that no one should be shaken in these tribulations, for you yourselves know that we are appointed for this. So he says, okay, there are external causes, you have this firm connection, you have come to Jesus, but pressure comes. And I know that pressure can lead to this. I am about to speak about how the devil, I will put it this way, uses these moments of pressure to push us away from God and from faith. That means, he brings us into a situation where we question things and where we start to waver, to shake, like a ship that is rocked back and forth. And the great thing and the challenge about it is that this is no surprise for Paul and he simply deals with it. That means, he does not say, you foolish Thessalonians, if you waver, then may God have mercy on you. But he says, because I am afraid that this will bring you to waver, I want to strengthen and comfort you. That is awesome, right? But that also means, you do not have to get scared now, if you notice, from time to time, a thought flies through my mind and I no longer know if the whole thing makes sense and then we are startled. It is quite normal that it comes. But it does not have to stay there. So you do not need to condemn yourself for what went wrong at the beginning in your faith or in your conversion, if you notice in between, oh, now I am really starting to waver. That is normal for Paul. And his answer is, I want to go there and I want to help you and I want to strengthen you and then it goes on again. Maybe you need some information, maybe you have not yet thought through a certain thing, I have the answer, how that works, and then it goes on again. Why do I say that? Because sometimes we despair over our doubts. You do not need to be scared, you are allowed to have doubts here in the FCG. Yes? And if you have a Sunday where all this here seems a bit too... too... to you, then you think, oh, I no longer know if you can keep up 100%, because I just have a knot in my head and... Awesome that you came here with a knot in your head. Yes? And then we raise our hands for you for a while, until you can raise them again. Yes, and we want to be there for each other and help each other mutually. Because faith is not static and because our faith must continue to develop. Every life phase raises new questions of faith. And sometimes the answers or the conclusions we drew yesterday do not hold in the next life phase. That does not mean that it was wrong, but it was perhaps only a partial answer. And we still need the other part added to it. I understand what I am getting at, right? It is okay that we are on the way. And you also do not need to write yourself off, just because you are currently in a crisis. One can come out of a crisis strengthened. And that is what Paul intends for the Thessalonians. If he is positively surprised how well they persevere. But he had considered the possibility that he has to clean up a lot. Doubting about arms instead of doubting about doubting, I have written here. Sometimes it is also
so that we do not even notice how firm our faith is, without it ever coming under pressure. If you want to develop a firm faith, then that may also mean that difficulties are part of the training. I will read you a story. I did not see it, but I did not see it. I did not see it, but I did not see it. But I did not see it. But I did not see it. A dark man passed through an oasis. He was so bitter in his character that he could not see anything healthy and beautiful; they stared into the eyes of the dark man. He took a heavy stone and placed it in the middle of the crown of the young palm tree. With an evil laugh, he continued on his way after his evil deed. The young palm tree shook itself and bent itself, trying to throw off the load. In vain; the stone sat too firmly in the crown. Then the tree dug itself deeper into the ground and braced itself against the stone load. It lowered its roots so deeply that they reached the hidden water veins of the oasis, and it pushed the stone so high that the crown reached beyond every shadow. Water from the depths and the heat of the sun from above made a royal palm out of the young tree. Then the proud palm lowered its crown, showed the stone, and said, I must thank you. Your load has kept me constantly firm. You understand the point. But it is actually true that challenges in life, and these can be different things. It can be resistance, that we are rejected. But it can also be that we are thrown into a challenge where we do not know how to master it. Or whatever else. They cause us to want to put down deeper roots in God as well. To be able to find better answers. To go more into prayer. To seek the counsel of others and to experience community. Things that, if everything is e

Also Christen Tumathir gestartet in Israel, seht ihr ja ganz deutlich, ja? Denn Paulus will vollenden, was ihnen am Glauben noch mangelt.
