And on the earth are signs for those of firm faith, and in yourselves – do you not see?

Spring is a sign of God that reminds of the Resurrection, and the Quran is the means that revives the believer's heart, which has hardened in everyday life.

So let us hold fast to the Quran, which our Prophet (s) has left us, and to the Sunna, which puts the Quran into practice.

The text is a DITIB Friday sermon that interprets spring as a religious sign. It begins with a Quranic citation that calls for recognizing the signs of God in the earth and in the human being oneself. Spring is understood as an analogy for the Resurrection, supported by a prophetic tradition. The focus is then directed to the inner heart, which can become hardened in everyday life and carried along by worldly currents. As a remedy, holding fast to the Quran and the Sunna is named, which are to grant the heart peace, light, and liveliness. The sermon concludes with a supplication in which the Quran is to be made the spring of the heart. The present-day relevance lies in the current season and the everyday inner hardening of the believers.

﷽: And in the earth are signs for those who are certain, and in yourselves – do you not then see? And the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Quran and the Sunnah: The Spring of Our Heart (03.04.2026) All praise is due to our Exalted Creator, Who created everything from nothing and has granted us spring after winter. Dear Believers! The seasons are not merely transitions from one period to another. Rather, they are signs of existence, of the Almighty power and the unique creation of Allah. With the following words, Allah draws our attention to the importance of reflecting upon the world and our own creation: "And in the earth are signs for those who are certain, and in yourselves – do you not then see?"[1] For this reflection brings us closer to Allah, strengthens our faith, and makes us more conscious servants. One can reach a state in which we recognize the works of Allah in every step and in everything we look upon. So let us together reflect upon the spring season. Honored Muslims! Spring reminds us of the Resurrection. One of the Companions, Abu Rayhan al-Uqayli (may Allah be pleased with him), asked our beloved Prophet (s): "O Messenger of Allah! How will Allah bring the creatures back to life?" Thereupon our beloved Prophet (s) answered: "Have you never seen a dried-up valley that later became green again? So Allah also brings the dead back to life."[2] Yes, the earth, which cools down in winter and sometimes even freezes, awakens to new life with the spring sun. It becomes warmer, more fertile, and begins to sprout. The nights become shorter, the days longer, and our surroundings come alive. The world takes on a colorful appearance; migratory birds return, butterflies and bees appear again. Thus we observe, in a sense, a resurrection. Dear Congregation! After we have reflected upon our outer world, we now wish to turn to our inner world. As our Prophet (s) says, there is a piece of flesh in our body that influences the whole body: if it is good, the whole body is good. This piece of flesh is our heart.[3] Just as the earth awakens to life again in spring and clothes itself in green, our heart too needs a spring. For with time, the everyday obligations increase, life passes by, and our heart hardens, loses its purpose, and turns in a wrong direction. Carelessness envelops us, and we are carried along by the current of worldly life. Our acts of faith do not bring us inner peace, and worldly pleasures do not fill our heart either. We live, but we are not truly happy. Shall I then tell you what can free our heart from this state and revive it? Esteemed Muslims! It is certainly Allah who revives our heart. What grants our heart tranquility, serenity, and peace is the Quran, which Allah has sent to us through our beloved Prophet (s). Thus Allah calls upon us in the Quran to follow the life-giving call of Allah and that of His Messenger.[4] So let us hold fast to the Quran, which our Prophet (s) has left for us, and to the Sunnah, which puts the Quran into practice.[5] Let us hold fast to it, so that our heart may be alive and on the right path at the time of the Resurrection. I wish to conclude my sermon with a supplication that we have learned from our Prophet (s): "O Allah! By all Your names, which only You know, I wish that You make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my heart, the driver away of my sorrow, and the remover of my worries!"[6] Amen, alhamdulillah, praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Geehrte Muslime!
