Religion consists at its core in sincerity, which unfolds in five directions: exclusive worship of God, earnest study of the Quran, following the Prophet, lawfulness toward the authorities, and non-discriminatory engagement for the good among people.

Sincerity means performing an action with the heart and without any pretence or dissimulation. A sincere person is always the same in their essence, words, and deeds, both inwardly and outwardly.

The text is a Friday sermon by the DITIB preaching commission that takes the hadith 'Religion is sincerity' as its starting point. Sincerity is defined as the inner and outer unity of word and deed, without pretence or hypocrisy. It is unfolded in five directions: toward Allah, the Quran, the Prophet, the authorities, and people. Toward Allah it means exclusive worship and sincere supplication. Toward the Quran it means reading it, studying it, and using it as a guide for life. Toward the Prophet it means accepting and following his message. Toward the authorities it demands adherence to the laws and the protection of the social good. Toward people it calls for an engagement for the good without discrimination based on religion, language, ethnicity, or gender. The text concludes with a prayer for sincerity and invites the congregation to examine their own sincerity.

Religion is Sincerity (20.12.2024) The Messenger of Allah said one day, "Religion is sincerity." His Companions asked: "To whom, [O Messenger of Allah]?" The Prophet of Mercy continued his words as follows: "To Allah, His Book, His Prophet, the Muslim authorities, and all Muslims."[1] My brothers and sisters! Dear believers! Sincerity means performing an action with the heart and without any pretence or dissimulation. A sincere person is always the same in their essence, words, and deeds, both inwardly and outwardly. Where sincerity is absent, hypocrisy and double-dealing prevail. Sincerity towards Allah means dedicating worship to Him alone.[2] Acts of worship are only valuable when they are performed solely for Allah and not to show off before others. Allah accepts only actions that are done with a sincere heart and for His sake.[3] The same applies to the supplication. It is only valuable when it comes from the depths of the heart. Likewise, the repentant plea for forgiveness, the tawba, requires absolute sincerity.[4] Without a sincere plea for forgiveness, there is a great probability of committing the same sin again. Sincerity towards the Quran means reading it, studying it, and using it as a guide in life. It means not being indifferent towards its verses, but applying the messages to oneself. According to the Quran, the sincere servants of Allah are those who take His warnings seriously and whose inner life corresponds to their outward behaviour.[5] It is precisely these people who are preserved from the suffering of the punishment in the Hereafter and rewarded with Paradise.[6] They are the ones whom Satan cannot mislead, because they act according to the principle of the Surah al-An'am: "My prayer, my acts of worship, my life, and my death belong to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds."[7] Sincerity towards the Messenger of Allah means accepting the truths he proclaimed,[8] following his path,[9] supporting his effort for monotheism (tawhid). Sincerity towards the authorities means behaving in accordance with the laws and protecting the social welfare. Sincerity towards people, on the other hand, means striving for the good in the world, in social as well as in working life – without discriminating on the basis of religion, language, ethnicity, and gender. May the exalted Allah make us such sincere servants who strive for the good to prevail in the world. May the exalted Allah make us people with pure intentions, truthful words, and a beautiful life. May this Friday offer us the opportunity to examine and strengthen our sincerity. The DITIB Preaching Commission [1] Muslim, Sahih, Iman, 95. [2] Quran, Zumar, 39/2. [3] Nasai, Sunan, Jihad, 24. [2] Koran, Zumer, 39/2.
