The stability and exemplary nature of a community's faith depend decisively on how thoroughly and personally the foundations of the Gospel as the word of God have been understood and anchored in everyday life.
The text analyzes the second chapter of the First Epistle to the Thessalonians to clarify the significance of a stable beginning of faith. The preacher argues that the robustness of the early church in Thessalonica was due to the fact that it received the Gospel as the word of God and not as mere human words. He expands the understanding of the Gospel beyond personal forgiveness of sin to the kingship of God and the restoration of creation. The sermon uses everyday metaphors such as buttoning a jacket to illustrate that it is never too late to examine and order the foundations of faith. Paul is presented as a model for the maternal and paternal transmission of the message, which took root among the listeners. The listeners are encouraged to examine and strengthen their own foundation of faith in order to live an exemplary life that inspires others.

We have a new sermon series. Josh started it off; the topic is very robust: developing a firm faith. And last time we reflected on the first chapter of the Thessalonian letter. It was about how the people living in Thessalonica, who had come to know and receive Jesus, practically became a community, a fellowship, and how, after a short time, they displayed such robustness, such firmness, such exemplary orientation, and wholeness, that what they lived was heard by others, who were inspired by it and could take an example from it. This resounded throughout the entire surrounding area. Josh showed this good map, indicating where the reputation of this church and what they had done had reached. And that was even more important because it was in times of absolute opposition and persecution. So this small church, the people who were a hodgepodge of individuals—some Jews, some Roman religious people influenced by Greek culture, yes, from such a world of gods, also people who had their own little personal gods—they all said, hey, we leave that behind us. We acknowledge Jesus as Lord and we follow him. And suddenly a church was there. Suddenly they were there, and they held together, and they held fast to the faith. And now we look at the second chapter. And I noticed something, namely that Paulus speaks about how the Thessalonians actually engaged with the good news, the gospel, and that their beginning was good, orderly, stable, and that this good state, this orderly state, contributed so much that they are now where they are. And we linger a bit here. Therefore, my sermon today is called: A good beginning, all is well. And it is—attention—it is never too late to have had a good beginning. Because if you have not had one yet, then you are still at the beginning, and then you can update it and then continue. Is that cool? Sometimes one also says to go back to the beginning, to look at the foundations again, to make them orderly again. Or if one has buttoned the jacket crookedly, then one must unbutton it again and then start from the front and bottom again, orderly, so that it fits. That means, it is not too late, but this sermon is meant to invite us to either make a good beginning or to button the jacket properly again, so that our faith is stable, firm, and the jacket fits. Aristotle already said, the beginning is half of the whole. So you know, I have read something. Or Benjamin Franklin said, by neglecting preparation, one prepares for failure. We do not want that. Or we say, good preparation is half the battle. Plato is quite hard. The beginning is the most important part of the work. We actually already know that how one starts a thing, whether one has good foundations, that they can really make a big difference. Okay, beginning, good, all is well. I will give you a brief insight into my chaotic world of sermon preparation. Normally this, exactly. I took the Bible and first read and looked at what stands out to me. Then I underline things and write things on it. In any case, first chapter, second chapter, then the third begins. You do not have to read it, but you should just get an impression. I noticed that in the first three chapters, and especially in the second here, there are very often mentions of either the gospel or the word of God or the message that I conveyed to you. That means, Paulus, who had a time with the Thessalonians, can no longer be there, but now in this chapter refers to the first time when he was still with them. And he repeatedly mentions, hey, you really had a good beginning
had. And we really made an effort so that you would have a good start. And that has to do with everything related to the fact that they understood the word or the message they had, grasped it, comprehended it, and did something with it. And this second chapter speaks of how much effort Paul, Silas, and he made to pass on to the people, in a maternal way, we will come to that shortly, and also in a paternal way, personally, so that it would take proper root in them. And he concludes, therefore you are probably now exemplary in your faith. And that has to do with whether they, as they did, understood the gospel, have you all ever heard of it, the good news, the basic information about the Kingdom of God and what God wants with this world and with people and what that has to do with them, how they understood it. And therefore we are now going to make a bit of an effort to retrace what Paul told them. And if you notice while doing this that there are black boxes, things you have not yet dealt with, then that is cool, because you can then decide, okay, I will learn a bit more about that. If you have already heard of it but it plays no role in your life, then you can embrace it anew, expose yourself to it again, so that you build your life on a good foundation. The step that Paul then takes is, because you have heard, understood, and applied it. Therefore you can now also lead a life that is pleasing to God. Therefore your lamp shines. Therefore the message of you, how you live and how exemplary you are, has gone out all around. That is the foundation. Therefore we are now going to look at two and a half questions. In the last sermon I did not manage to get to the third one, so no announcement. But I could have asked three questions. What is the gospel in the first place? The good news, that which we must know in order to be able to believe at all. How did the Thessalonians receive the gospel? We can learn from them how to deal with it when one has the information. And the third, how did Paul pass on the gospel? Because we can perhaps learn from him how to do it so that it also bears fruit in others. Let’s see whether it remains in the second sermon or whether you are so attentive that you drive me to peak performance. Okay. Let’s start with the first question. Ah, the texts are like this. Are you ready? Yes. He just said, hey, we treated you like a mother, gently pleaded, and so on, and now continuing. You are witnesses. And God, 1 Thessalonians 2:10–13. How holy and righteous and blameless we were toward you believers. As you know, that we exhorted you, each one of you, as a father his children, comforted and urged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory. And therefore we also give thanks to God unceasingly, that, when you received from us the word of the report of God, you did not receive it as the word of men, but as it truly is, as the word of God, which also works in you believers. I took the Elberfelder translation. I would like to read other translations in parallel, because it matters to me now regarding a few words. What did Paul mean by that? Okay, the first thing. What is the gospel in the first place? What did Paul and Silas have? What did they tell the people so that they all suddenly became Christians? Many of you perhaps grew up in a Christian environment. You also heard things there and you saw people how they lived it. And perhaps you did not have such a real process where, ah, what is going on there? I want to know. Ah, that is how it is. I do it, I go through it. But rather it was like, okay, I will join in. It feels good,
It does not feel right. I actually consider it correct, but I do not quite know why. Okay, I will explain myself. I am afraid of the judgment, or that Jesus is so great. Sometimes this can become a bit fluffy. Do you know what I mean? That you actually know a great deal, but do not know enough and cannot properly sort it out, so that you can truly grasp it. Now, now I have it. What is it that we should know? And a hint is, here in the text, Paul says, who calls you to his kingdom. I do not know if that has occurred to you. "Kingdom" is a strange word, isn't it? It is not about poverty and wealth, but about a kingship. Or about a state entity or about government, dominion. Are you with me? Yes. And now we suddenly see, okay, there is a roof for the good news. Many of us, when asked what the gospel, the good news, is, would say that Jesus died on the cross for me, took my guilt upon himself. And that I now, because I believe, can stand clean and holy before him and am a child of God. Is that a good news? Is that the whole message? Do not say anything false. That is a major part of the good news. It is totally relevant. But it only becomes exciting when I have understood other information about God and the world, have grasped it, and have been seized in faith. And this is, I hope you follow me, so important to me that we check the whole thing, because if guilt is no longer your question, or if you constantly deal with guilt and stop at this point, and there are no other information about God and the world and the gospel, the good news, you might then, although it is the right information, perhaps remain stuck and not move forward. For Jesus does not only free us from our guilt. He is also the King of eternity, who waits for us in the future. He is also the one who in the future will extend his kingdom, his dominion, over the entire universe again, and that then there will be no more evil, but only good. That is the Jesus who was present at the creation and who initiated the earth in the first place. And that means that he was also present in your creation process and knew you before you even existed. And if it is now said, hey, this is the message of the kingdom, then that means the good news is so great and all-encompassing that you have a place in it and at some point you ask yourself, how can I be part of it? What must I do, what can I do for you now, if Jesus is truly the Savior, if he is truly the Creator, if he is truly the King of all, if this is truly about the whole, about this earth, about this planet, about heaven and earth, and the invisible world, the invisible world. I am trying to paint it beautifully large, do you see, right? Then the question comes, how can I be part of it? Okay, it is about kingdom, dominion. God has set himself the goal to restore his creation, which he made, to order. And the gospel, that was the message at that time, for example, of a king attaining power. The King of Norway has now died. So today kings have nothing to say anymore. But nevertheless, it made it into the news that the King of Norway has died and that now Marek of Norway is, I do not know if anyone has heard that. And this news, when kings still had something to say and were truly rulers, was a very important news. The gospel, this message that was proclaimed, with riders, there, there, there, there, there, there, there is a new king, attention, attention, and all people thought, okay, let’s see how he rules. That might do something to me, let’s see if he has high taxes or low taxes, if he takes my sons into the military or if we can build a good family. That means that in the
The moment when the Gospel of Jesus went out into the world, that was the understanding of the apostles, then they said, attention, attention, there Jesus was set on the throne as King of the world. And now something else is happening. His kingdom is going to expand. It comes bit by bit; right now it still lives in the people who grasp it in faith, who receive the Holy Spirit, who become part of his church, and as many as possible are to get on board before he returns, to his creation, to judge it, and then to make the whole thing a beautiful, healed thing. He has come to set his creation right again. Are you in? Okay. Some find that good. So, the Gospel has three seasons. Something happened, something is happening now, and something will happen. And everything has to do with Jesus. It is not simply about, even though that is a very important point, that you are a beloved creature, that you are guilty, that Jesus died for you, that he died on the cross for you, but this message tells you how you can become part of the kingdom of God, and how you, when Jesus comes again, can look forward to the joy, because all your guilt has been borne, and you are a child of God, you already belong. You are part of the whole. Yes, you have already recognized beforehand who Jesus is, and then he tells us things for the people who then come along, who have their guilt forgiven, that we even become children. We are appointed as heirs. Everything that belongs to Jesus also belongs to us. A wonderful future, etc. What are the basic components of the Gospel? I will quickly run through them, are you with me? If you find an apprenticeship, you say, I want to learn more about it. The Gospel in general is the announcement that Jesus is Ruler. He died, rose again, and then it says in the Bible that he ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. Have you ever heard that? That means that he was installed as King, as King of heaven and earth. We worship, as we said earlier, we exalt you, because he is King. This is not just a nice song for someone we find nice, but he is King. He is due all honor. Whoever has understood that may even do it gladly. Jesus is Lord, not the Caesar, was the message at that time. The second, he completes the story. He kicked it off and he also completes the story. Also the history of this world, of this earth, of this country, your family history, your personal history. The kingdom of God was kicked off with Jesus, and now it is spreading and will one day fully break in with the coming of Jesus. The cross and Jesus’ death on the cross enable you and me and a broken creation to be transferred into the New. Into eternity, into what God had in mind. You can already be renewed now and you do not need to fear the judgment, where Jesus will eliminate everything that is broken, and destructive, and dilapidated, and also guilty, so that the New can be present in a different quality. Are you with me? Therefore, the judgment is something that we embrace, even though it is hard, because it is the prerequisite for the New to come fully. And God’s solution, that we do not have to be afraid of it beforehand, is that he forgives us our guilt. That he says, you can now get on board the kingdom of God, there are no preconditions. The only thing you do is, confess your guilt, reorient yourself, and be a member of the team. Is that good? That means, he justifies you and makes you a family member. All that we then sing, you are my Father, I am your child, we have access to that, because Jesus died for us. Because he wanted from the beginning that you experience what is to come in the future. That you are part of this healed, new world. And we may already bring much of that into our life, into life. This is a process,
We are not perfect, but the new has already started and it is allowed to grow. Yes, what is the Gospel? I once had a list of five points. The Resurrection is central. Why is the Resurrection important? What do they think? Let’s call two or three people in. Why is it important that Jesus has risen and that one can embrace that? Otherwise, faith would be in vain; why would it be in vain? Yes, so if Jesus has not risen, then he is not the Son of God. If he has not risen, then no one needs him. If he has not risen, he cannot now reign. If he has not risen, he cannot return. If he has not risen, he cannot make a new world. If he has not risen, then although he died for our sins, there is no new life. There is no hope for anything. Because Jesus is the Son of God, but he is also the prototype for you and me. But also for what happens to this earth. So we cannot exactly imagine what it looks like when a new creation comes and a new age. But we get indications: if Jesus is the first to rise and the world also has to go through such a process of renewal, then we know that, however bad it looks at the end, the new arises and it is better than before. The Resurrection is totally important because it is God’s authentication that Jesus is real and that he has the power to do everything: to forgive you your guilt, but also to let you become something new. Therefore, the message that Jesus died and he rose was the central element of the Gospel. And they did not start with guilt or such, but with the fact that Paul told the Jews, hey, a person like Jesus had to come; that is already written in the Scriptures. And that is logical from the history of Israel and from what the prophets said. And when he then spoke to non-Jews, as in Athens, he said, hey, your philosophers and the wisest thinkers have already philosophized that there must actually be more. They also spoke about the divine in creation. They were all approaches pointing to the fact that there must be more and that it should not end so terribly. And I am telling you now the solution. There is a Creator who established the whole thing; something is broken and it must be made whole. He wants to make it whole again; for that he sent Jesus. He died, rose, resolved the question of guilt, and he will in the future set everything right. And you can be part of it. You have found yourself in a group of people. Sometimes he said to Jews, sometimes to Gentiles, that this makes something of me. I believe that is right. I believe that is Jesus. How revelation comes into our life is often different. Some receive a healing and say, okay, if Jesus can heal, then he exists, then he has risen, then I can understand that thing with sin. Do I stand for what I mean? We all start somewhere, so everyone starts somewhere and God reveals himself and confirms that it is true. And at some point one comes to a believing attitude. One has the information and then faith comes along and then one embraces that and then one aligns one’s life with it. And that is the next point, which Peter always preached. A call to repentance. That means, if it is so that Jesus is so important, that he has risen, that the plan works, then I must somehow draw conclusions from that. Okay, Jesus, you are the boss. I bow before you. I need forgiveness. I ask for forgiveness. Okay, there is a Creator who has ideas for creation. What are your ideas for creation? And then I try to implement them in my life. And if I cannot, I ask the Holy Spirit to help me. It is fundamentally about aligning oneself.
upon this entire message of Jesus and his reign. Are you with me? This helps us immensely, if we have understood and grasped this, not to be thrown off balance when things get difficult. The new creation, whose prototype is Jesus. I have already spoken about the coming judgment. Okay, you have now heard a lot of stuff, right? There is a great deal to say. But these are the foundations of the Gospel. This is good news. Jesus is in charge, he is the Lord, he has a plan from beginning to end. You can be part of it, just as you are. Can you not? He has resolved it, be part of it, who is your child? Follow him. Okay, I can now make an appeal. Second question. How did the Thessalonians receive the Gospel? In 2 Thessalonians 2:13. And for this reason we also thank God unceasingly, because, when you received from us the word of the truth of God, you did not receive it as the word of men, but as it is in truth, as the word of God, which also works in you who believe. So first of all, they received it. This is another word for, they engaged with the teaching of Paul, which he brought, and understood it. But this is a great truth. I ask you, however, how much effort have you made to actually know and understand what God wants? And I say this deliberately, if you are a child of God and you were pushed into the congregation as a child in a stroller, we never know what we do not know. If one grows up in an environment where it is always about it, then there is a great deal that we have already heard and where we think we have checked it, because it sounds familiar. But that by no means means that we have really checked it, because we have understood it. And I want to truly encourage you for a good start and perhaps also back to the start. I want to engage substantively with what the Bible sa

Und jetzt passiert was anderes. Okay. Ein paar finden das gut. Also, das Evangelium hat drei Zeissons. Da ist was passiert, da passiert jetzt was, und da wird was passieren. Alles, was Jesus gehört, auch uns gehört. Was denken die?
