Orthodox theology is not a theoretical construction but lived experience and participation in the Deity, which finds its fulfilment in the mystical practice of saints such as Symeon the New Theologian.

Our Orthodox theology is not a theoretical construction and does not exist to satisfy our intellect, but it is experience, way of life, participation in the Deity and deification by grace.

The text presents the Orthodox saint Symeon the New Theologian as a great mystiker and frames Orthodox theology as lived experience and participation in the Deity, not as a theoretical construction. It distinguishes this view from Western and heretical theology, which is portrayed as an intellectual construction and false belief. In the biographical section, Symeon's path from noble official to monk is described, accompanied by several divine visions and the uncreated light. His spiritual father Symeon the Righteous plays a central role in his calling. As abbot of the monastery of Saint Mamas, he experienced resistance and envy from his fellow monks, who considered him a heretic. Despite exile and difficulties, he remained in his mystical practice and left behind theological writings. The text emphasises that Symeon experienced mystical theology as theosis and that his works formed the foundation of later mystical theology.

Saint Symeon the New Theologian: The Great Mystic of our Church Hagiography - Figures 12.10.2026 Lambros Skontzos, Theologian Our Orthodox theology is not a theoretical construct and does not exist to satisfy our intellect, but is an experience, a way of life, a participation in the Divinity and, by grace, deification. This is also the specific difference between it and Western and generally the theology of the heretics, which satisfies intellectual constructs, gives the illusion of the supposed fullness of the truth and therefore leads from one error to another and from one heresy to another. On the contrary, the approach to the theology of our Church as an ecclesiastical experience, as a natural way of being, does not simply teach the truth, but transforms it into a transformation of the faithful, to the point of having theosis, a living awareness of the uncreated energies of God in their daily life. The saints of our Church experienced this fact. One of those who was granted to see the uncreated light of God with his physical eyes is Saint Symeon the New Theologian, one of the greatest Fathers and Theologians of our Church. He was born in 957 in the Anatolian city of Galatia in Paphlagonia and his baptismal name was Georgios. His noble parents saw to it that he received a serious education, because they intended him for high state offices. At the age of six they sent him to Constantinople to study. He soon emerges as a prominent figure of the Imperial City. With the help of a noble uncle he is appointed spatharokoubelarios, with the possibility of being elevated to senator. He performs his duties with success, but also with humility. The brilliance of worldly power does not carry him away and he did not intend to spend his whole life among the vainly ambitious nobles of power. His acquaintance and spiritual relationship with the Studite saint Symeon the God-Pious changed his life. After the death of Nikephoros Phokas in 969, he abandoned his position and withdrew to the renowned Monastery to live near his spiritual father. The latter did not agree, because he was only 14 years old, and advised him to return to his position. At the age of 20 he received a special blessing from God. One night while he was praying fervently, his room was filled with a blinding and unexplainable light. Symeon fell into ecstasy and had the sensation that he had been raised to heaven. An unexplainable joy filled his soul for the divine vision. He immediately ran to his spiritual father to whom he recounted the vision and begged him to accept him near him. The latter again refused, apparently, by divine inspiration so that the will of his disciple would be further shaped. At the age of 26 the wondrous vision was repeated. At that time he had been assigned an official mission to his homeland. Before departing he announced to his spiritual father the new vision. The latter revealed to him that he was of an age where he could become a monk. His joy was unexpected. He carried out his journey and on the occasion, announced to his parents his intention to follow the monastic life. They reacted violently and tried to change his mind, because they saw the brilliant career that was unfolding before him. He remained unshakable. He withdrew to the Monastery of Stoudios, where he was tonsured a monk and received the monastic name of his spiritual father, Symeon. But the temptations did not take long. His obedience to his spiritual father aroused the envy of his fellow monks, because he was to obey only the abbot Peter. That is why he was forced to leave and to settle elsewhere. It was then that he saw a third divine vision in sequence. He settled in the nearby Monastery of Saint Mamas of Xerokorkou, where the abbot was the pious Anthony. His father came with several senators to persuade him to return to the world. He refused again, while at the same time he saw a fourth divine vision. He was 29 years old, when the abbot fell asleep in the Lord. After the request of the brotherhood of the Monastery and the consent of Patriarch Nicholas II Chrysoberges, he was elected abbot of the Monastery. During his ordination to the priesthood he saw a fifth divine vision. As abbot of the Monastery of Saint Mamas, Symeon was called to face many problems, from the building works of the Monastery to the spiritual cultivation of the brotherhood. As a novice monk and a mystical theologian he spoke of "divine love" and of the illumination of the "divine light." The monks, because they did not understand him, considered him a heretic and declared war on him. Some appealed to the Patriarch to have him deposed. He declared him innocent. He remained in the position of abbot for 25 years. In 1013, at the age of 57, after handing over the abbacy to his disciple Arsenius, he withdrew to a nearby hermitage and devoted himself to ascetic practice and literary work. However, the metropolitan of Nicomedia, Stephen, managed to persuade the Patriarch to send him into exile, to the region of Chrysoupolis, because he considered his spiritual father Symeon a saint. He settled in a certain desert church of Saint Marina, where he fell peacefully asleep in the Lord in the year 1037 at the age of 80, after having foreseen his death. His memory is celebrated on November 12. Saint Symeon received the title of New Theologian, because he belongs to the great teachers of our Church. He belongs to the mystical theologians, who cultivated and experienced mystical theology as theosis. His works "Hymns of Divine Love," "Catecheses," and "Practical and Theological Chapters" formed the basis of the subsequent mystical theology and the spiritual life of the faithful.
