Philotheos Kokkinos was a great ecclesial figure who gave the Hesychasm movement its ecclesial establishment, and it is a shame that he is so little known and honoured within his own tradition.

Philotheos Kokkinos is the ecclesial counterpart to the Emperor John Kantakouzenos for the Hesychasm movement, for, just as the latter had established it politically, so he established it ecclesiastically.

The text honours the Orthodox saint Philotheos Kokkinos as a great but nearly forgotten figure of the Church. It emphasises that Philotheos is not or barely recorded in several important liturgical and hagiographical collections, although his sanctity was recognised early on. The author refers to the close connection between Philotheos and the Hesychasm movement and with figures such as Gregory Palamas. Philotheos' origin from a poor family and his early time as a servant of a teacher are interpreted as signs of his humility and ascetic submission. The text acknowledges that the reasons for the forgetting of his person are unclear. It quotes an assessment according to which Philotheos gave the Hesychasm movement its ecclesial establishment, much as the Emperor John Kantakouzenos had supported it politically. The text concludes with the appeal to better know Philotheos and to honour him accordingly, and gives his commemoration days.

Saint Philotheos Kokkinos, A Great Figure of the Church Who Remains Almost Unknown! Hagiography - Figures 12.10.2026 Nevertheless, the life and ministry of Saint Philotheos seems to be “hidden” behind these well-known books, or perhaps they reveal him to some extent, since his own saintly life and ministry are not recorded either in the “Synaxarion” of Saint Nektarios of the Holy Mountain nor in the “Great Synaxarion of the Orthodox Church.” You will not find him, either, in the “Menaion of October” on the eleventh of October, that is, on the day of his feast. We turned to the “Synaxarion of Triodion,” since he is also honored on the Fifth Sunday of Lent, as noted by Monk Moses², but again there is no corresponding reference there, nor in the same volume of the Triodion and the “Synaxarion” of the Fifth Sunday! Indeed, a great paradox! We must point out that all this happens, even though his sainthood was recognized very early on! This, it seems, was forgotten over the course of time, while the service written for him was also lost, as well as the very date of his feast! Thus, one might think that his life and ministry were not so important… (A new service was written only at the end of the 18th century, accompanied by an extensive life). What happened, perhaps, no one can interpret to us precisely. As for what it is about, I am copying from the presentation by Panagiotis Christou in the “Hagiography of Thessaloniki”: “Philotheos Kokkinos is for Hesychasm the ecclesiastical counterpart of Emperor John Kantakouzenos, because, just as the latter had imposed it politically, the former imposed it ecclesiastically.”! Indeed! This alone is enough for us to understand or suspect much about this great saint and ecclesiastical man! As, of course, much is also said by his spiritual connection with the great saints Gregory Palamas and Sabbas the Vatopedine, the fool-for-Christ, whom we mentioned earlier! And if his sainthood constitutes the height of his life and ministry, and his great and manifold contribution to the Church is the middle ground, let us also look at the… depth of his life, that is, where he started. Phokas Kokkinos by his secular name came from a poor family, and his mother was of Jewish descent, as noted by Monk Moses. Also, we learn from both sources mentioned above that he studied philology under the teacher Thomas Magistros, of whom he was also a servant! Yes! You read it correctly, a servant! Presumably to pay his tuition! As you can understand, the poor student was trained alongside his teacher in a peculiar ascetic obedience of life, something which, it seems, helped him also in the corresponding monastic obedience. In this way, he humbly ascended the broader scale of virtues! And to emphasize the contrast between the “depth” and the height of the life and ministry of Saint Philotheos, we quote the sentence with which the blessed Monk, Fr. Moses, begins his text: “He is one of the most prominent and most prolific hierarchs of our Church and one of the greatest Ecumenical Patriarchs.” Consequently, it is a pity that we do not know him better and do not honor him as much as he deserves! He is honored on October 11, and also on the Fifth Sunday of Lent of Great Lent. May we have his blessing! 1). 1).
