Begin Sadhana in Small Steps - Daily Inspiration

Sukadev Bretz · Yoga Vidya – Tägliche Inspirationen · 2026-10-17 · Horn-Bad Meinberg · Source

Patience · main message Responsibility · carrying

Spiritual maturation is not achieved through intense, unreasonable efforts, but through the patient, gradual increase of small practices that can be integrated into daily life.

One gram of practice is better than tons of theory about yoga, religion, and philosophy in daily life and attaining self-realization.

The speaker quotes from the book 'Sadhana Ch' and emphasizes the need to adapt spiritual practices to individual life circumstances. He advises gradually increasing the duration of exercises rather than immediately striving for intense perfection. As a central principle, it is stated that one gram of practice is better than tons of theory. The text encourages making small but clear resolutions that are feasible in everyday life, such as daily meditation or mindfulness in conversations. It warns against postponing spiritual work to later life phases such as retirement. Instead, one should begin now and, in times of high stress or illness, supplement the practice by frequently thinking of God. The focus is on the continuous, patient integration of spirituality into daily life.

I am reading something from the book Saadhanach, from the chapter Saadhanathattva. The science of the sevenfold trainings, sometimes called the seven disciplines. And he says here, adapt the spiritual recommendations to your life circumstances and gradually increase the duration. So, there are many recommendations. You either take seminars here or you have extensive Smythi, where everything is written down that one can do in the ashram, how one can grow. And then one can see how I adapt that. And then he says, and gradually increase the duration. I could think about some, have I increased the duration somewhat last year. At the beginning it is perhaps first of all difficult to even get into the practice. At some point one does more and hopes that one will swiftly reach God-realization through intensive practice. Then one has wonderful experiences and thinks, now self-realization is just around the corner. Then one perhaps intensifies even more, or one... and then one realizes, not quite around the corner yet. Or there are some circumstances that somehow pull one out. Something very urgent, something important. Then one has time again and... One would rather feel oneself out with something else. But in the previous sentence, which I believe I had dealt with yesterday morning, I don't know whether it was yesterday or on Monday, in any case, he says there. One gram of practice is better than tons of theory about yoga, religion and philosophy in daily life and attain self-realization. At the beginning, make some resolutions that you can also keep and that represent a small but clear progress compared to your present habits and your character. So, make resolutions. He says now at the beginning, but actually it is not only at the beginning. If we somehow want to move forward, it is also good that we make resolutions. He says, at the beginning you should make those that one can also implement and that make a difference. If we make a resolution, I will do one round of alternate breathing once a week. You can keep it, but it will not now make the all-too-big difference. One can, however, make the resolution. I want to practice, now there are also some beginners here, a quarter hour of Asana and Pranayama every day. One can manage that and that makes a difference if one was not doing it before. Or one can make the resolution, when I am speaking to a person, I want to be fully there with that person and show 100% presence there. And not only show, but feel. That is also something important. Or one can make the resolution, I will not get angry for two days. If you make the resolution, I will not get angry for a whole year. That will be difficult. But two days one can manage, right? I can of course say that in the ashram it is easier than at home. But... if someone at home is the ashram, then it is easier if you are at Yoga-Vitya-Nordsee-Fahrt or Yoga-Vitya-Algoy than being here. But even here, one goes to the buffet and the person in front of one is just taking the last fried potatoes away. And now there is only rice left there. Then one can think, that person did me a favor. And wants me mental peace. That he filled it up completely. We probably don't know that he has a whole family. That is actually not only for him, but also for the egoistic type and that in the ashram. Sometimes one gets more annoyed with people in the ashram than elsewhere and thinks, in the ashram people should really be conscious. Where are we here? That the people are outside, that the people are unconscious. We can set ourselves things... We can set ourselves things. And represent a small but clear progress compared to the present habits in one's character. And then, when he says, most of you still have between 40 and 100 years to live, there can one can do a great deal. One does not have to do everything today. But also not to say, when I am retired, I will start. Or when my grandchildren are old enough, then I will intensify. One can postpone it to all sorts of things. Or when my children are out of kindergarten... Or when they go to kindergarten, or when they no longer have to be driven around so much. Not to postpone too much, but to make resolutions now. And then he also says, if you are sick or very demanded professionally or have unavoidable obligations, then replace a part of the active Sadhana and a frequent thinking of God. So... We can also do that. I recently asked someone how much time he has for the practice. He said, 24 hours. Every moment again... he resolves to be aware. But... One, two hours of sitting meditation, that is also needed. And that helps him then to practice Sadhana at any time during the rest of the day. Yes, as he does it entirely.

Also, es gibt viele Empfehlungen. Irgendetwas ganz dringendes, was wichtig ist. Also Vorsätze fassen. Und will mir Gemütsruhe. Also ...
