The text claims that Metropolitan Germanos Karabagges, through his active, diplomatic, and religious actions, protected the Greek population in Macedonia from Bulgarian violence and thus paved the way for the national struggle.

In those hours, however, when the Bulgarian terror rule prevailed in Macedonia and Greek blood was flowing, he had to, as an Orthodox cleric, fulfil his duty and save the flock that the Ecumenical Patriarchate had entrusted to him.

The text commemorates, on the anniversary of the Macedonian Struggle, Paulos Melas and his death in 1904. It places the figure of Metropolitan Germanos Karabagges in the foreground, who served as an educated cleric in Kastoria. Germanos is portrayed as someone who, despite his academic career, fulfilled his religious duty to protect the Greek population in Macedonia. The text describes the situation under the 'Bulgarian terror rule' and the inaction of the Greek government after 1897. Germanos is described as a forerunner of the struggle and as someone who acted diplomatically and vocally to enable the burial of Melas. The Metropolitan's actions are framed as an act of protecting the flock and saving the local population. The text connects historical events with an appreciation of religious commitment in a time of national threat.

When the Metropolitan of Kastoria, Germanos Karabagges, met Pavlos Melas A tribute to Macedonia 18.10.2026 Stelios Koukos Today is the anniversary of the Macedonian Struggle, and consequently a remembrance of Pavlos Melas, who breathed his last in Macedonia on October 13, 1904. He was very young, only 34 years old… Germanos Karabagges was of the same age when he first came to Macedonia in 1900 as the Metropolitan of Kastoria. He was a particularly well-educated young man, with studies in Germany, who could have excelled as a professor at Chalki or remained a vicar bishop in Pera, Constantinople. However, in those hours when Bulgarian terror prevailed in Macedonia and Greek blood was flowing, he had to, as a Greek cleric, fulfill his duty and save the flock entrusted to him by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He could not wash his hands and leave the populations of Macedonia—first and foremost the Orthodox priests and the Greek teachers—to be slaughtered. Especially since the Greek government, after the defeat of 1897, could do nothing. Thus, the young Metropolitan of Kastoria, Germanos, became the archangel of the region and the forerunner of the Struggle. His particularly dynamic actions in many and varied fields exceeded the narrow environment of the metropolis and the boundaries of Korytsa. He was among the first to call upon Athens to send guerrilla units to cooperate with the native Macedonians and to assist the local population. Among those who came was Pavlos Melas, whom Metropolitan Germanos did not manage to meet while alive—only through noisy but also diplomatic actions did he claim from the Turkish kaymakam his “holy tent” and, “crushed in lamentations,” managed to bury “the sacred remains of our martyr.”
