The Coptic Church must keep its traditional and conservative doctrine alive and continue to develop it through creative and contemporary didactic methods, particularly through intensive Bible education of the youth.
We need creativity and renewal in teaching within the Church, that is, we must present the right doctrine of our Church in a contemporary way.
The text documents the participation of Pope Tawadros II. in the graduation ceremony of the first cohort of the Rakuti School of Bible Studies in the Diocese of Asyut. The school, which operates under the umbrella of the Academy of Saint Mark, has completed a seven-year programme titled 'Strong Food'. Pope Tawadros emphasises in his address that the Church is traditional and conservative, but must present its doctrine in a contemporary form, much as Athanasius used philosophy. He describes a 'triangle' of youth, Holy Scripture, and Church, whose area is Christ. The Pope calls for creativity and renewal in the Church's ministry in order to make the straight line of doctrine accessible to today's generation. He thanks the teachers and bishops and encourages the graduates to continue their service and to spread out. The text highlights the importance of systematic Bible exegesis and its connection with Orthodox dogmatics and liturgy.

His Holiness the Pope: Our Church is traditional and conservative, possessing a straight line in teaching. We only need to present it in a new form, which is what Saint Athanasius the Apostolic did when he used philosophy to explain the faith.
This evening, His Holiness Pope Tawadros II attended the graduation ceremony for the first cohort of the “Strong Food” program at the Rakuti School for Bible Study, affiliated with the Diocese of Asyut. The ceremony was held at the Coptic St. Mark Academy in the Monastery of Saint Abba Bishoy in Wadi Natrun.
His Eminence Bishop Yohannes, Bishop of Asyut and Secretary of the Holy Synod, delivered a speech in which he expressed gratitude to His Holiness the Pope and to the administration of the St. Mark Academy for hosting the Rakuti School cohort, as well as for the Academy’s hosting of the school’s conference. He highlighted the methodology of study in the “Strong Food” program, which is a serious and unique methodology comprising seven steps:
1. Interpretation according to historical, cultural, and linguistic context.
2. Typological interpretation, meaning viewing the Old Testament through the lens of the Lord of Glory, Jesus, and the New Testament.
3. Spiritual and symbolic interpretation.
4. The connection of the text to the Lord Jesus Christ and Orthodox doctrine.
5. The connection of the text to the Church’s liturgy.
6. Its connection to the thought and writings of the Fathers.
7. Practical applications of the biblical text in our daily lives.
The cohort graduating today studied at “Rakuti” for seven years. It is a cohort ranging in age from 18 to 30 years, and there is also a special section for listeners.
Rakuti is a Catechism school for Coptic youth. In addition to the “Strong Food” program for Bible study, there is another program called the “Body of Truth” program, which consists of specialized courses dealing with the fundamentals of Orthodox Christian faith. From this program, the course “The Holy Trinity and the Mystery of the Incarnation” and the course “The Holy Spirit in the Teaching of Saint Cyril the Great” have been published, and recently the course “Outpouring of Grace” was published, which explains the doctrine of salvation in Jesus Christ.
Graduate Marina Ayman delivered the graduates’ speech, and a documentary film about the journey of “Rakuti” was presented.
In his address, His Holiness the Pope clarified that there is a successful triangle in this school:
1. The youth: The students and graduates who love God, strive, and continue in their studies.
2. The Holy Bible: God’s message, which we study under the title “We seek the Word among words,” meaning that we seek Christ amidst the words of the Holy Bible in all its books.
3. The Church: Under whose shadow we live.
The area of this triangle is our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and this is the vitality of our Coptic Church.
We need creativity and renewal in teaching within the Church, that is, to present the straight teaching of our Church in a contemporary manner. Therefore, we need the ministry to be renewed in all its elements: the fathers, the youth, and deep spiritual life, in a way that keeps pace with the times. “RENEW OUR DAYS AS OF OLD.” (Lamentations 5:21)
I am extremely happy to see Rakuti providing us with this service in such a beautiful form, with its thought, style, and uprightness, and I hope that it will spread more and more.
I greet you and thank you. I thank His Eminence Bishop Yohannes, our Father Bishoy, the priest fathers, and all the teachers. You have begun, and today you celebrate the start of the eighth year. I ask you to continue seriously and to spread, and we offer you the Academy with all its capabilities so that you may study and celebrate your graduation there, and we may rejoice in you all.
